Hasenbank Submitted to the Department of Mechanical Engineering on May 15, 2020, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degrees of Naval Engineer and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering Abstract Protecting a coastline from the damage of a storm surge, or tidal flooding associ- ated with sea level rise, is a challenging and costly engineering endeavor. Low lying properties located directly on an ocean coastline are limited in protective solutions to include constructing shoreline barriers, increasing building elevations, or relocation. However, shoreline properties on an estuary are afforded the additional protective option of a dynamic sea barrier spanning the mouth of the bay or river. The Delta Works projects in the Netherlands pioneered the design and construc- tion of large scale dynamic sea barriers. Although similar projects have been built or proposed, the high costs have minimized wide spread implementation.

His researches seem to them a waste of time and energy. Interest in ancestors, love of family and kindred, those subtle questions of race, origin, even of life itself, which they involve, are quite beyond their com prehension. They live only in the present, care nothing for the past and little for the future; for " he who cares not whence he cometh, cares not whither he goeth." When such persons are approached with questions of ancestry, they retire to their stronghold of apathy; and the querist learns, without diffi culty, that whether their ancestors were vile or illustrious, virtuous or vicious, or whether, indeed, they ever had any, is to them a matter of supreme indifference.

  • Spatial Distribution of Deepwater Seagrass in the Inter-Reef Lagoon of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area
Vol. 392: 57–68, 2009 MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES Published October 19 doi: 10.3354/meps08197 Mar Ecol Prog Ser Spatial distribution of deepwater seagrass in the inter-reef lagoon of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area Robert Coles1,*, Len McKenzie1, Glenn De’ath2, Anthony Roelofs1, Warren Lee Long3 1Northern Fisheries Centre, Primary Industries and Fisheries, PO Box 5396, Queensland 4870, Australia 2Australian Institute of Marine Science, PMB 3, Townsville, Queensland 4810, Australia 3Wetlands International — Oceania, PO Box 4573, Kingston, ACT 2604, Australia ABSTRACT: Seagrasses in waters deeper than 15 m in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area (adjacent to the Queensland coast) were surveyed using a camera and dredge (towed for a period of 4 to 6 min); 1426 sites were surveyed, spanning from 10 to 25°S, and from inshore to the edge of the reef (out to 120 nautical miles from the coast). At each site seagrass presence, species, and biomass were recorded; together with depth, sediment, secchi, algae presence, epibenthos, and proximity to reefs. Seagrasses in the study area extend down to water depths of 61 m, and are difficult to map other than by generating distributions from point source data. Statistical modeling of the seagrass dis- tribution suggests 40 000 km2 of the sea bottom has a probability of some seagrass being present. There is strong spatial variation driven in part by the constraint of the Great Barrier Reef’s long, thin shape, and by physical processes associated with the land and ocean. All seagrass species found were from the genus Halophila. Probability distributions were mapped for the 4 most common species: Halophila ovalis, H.
