Unlike traditional journalism, the sly character of political humor may enable it to operate with more freedom than other forms of media while still providing social critique. This research examines three different case studies: the United States (democracy), Venezuela (semi-authoritarian), and Cuba (authoritarian) and evaluates their satire on how openly critical it is and what type of censorship it suffers. Through extensive content analysis of satirical work produced within the country, as well as a historical research into the censorship of its authors, I create a comprehensive account of the nature of political satire in that country within the past five years. This study finds that, while the nature of satire in democratic and authoritarian states is as to be expected, semi-authoritarian states experience an intense degree of political criticism comparable to that of a democracy. Keywords: political satire, political regime, Venezuela, Cuba, United States POLITICAL SATIRE UNDER DIFFERENT POLITICAL REGIMES 4 INTRODUCTION Every Monday at 8pm, Venezuelans would gather around their television sets to tune into Radio Rochela. Airing from 1959 until 2010, Radio Rochela was a staple on Venezuelan late- night television. Featuring sketches that parodied Venezuelan culture and politics, it aired for over four decades on the public broadcast television channel Radio Caracas Televisión, also known as RCTV. 1 In 2007, the Chavez administration announced that it would not renew RCTV’s national broadcasting license2. From then on, RCTV would only air in the homes of those who could afford cable television – away from the middle and lower classes, who constitute the majority of the governments’ voters. For years, RCTV had produced telenovelas, talk shows, newscasts, and comedy sketches that were present in every Venezuelan home. However, the increasingly undemocratic government had taken offense to Radio Rochela’s sense of humor, which spared no one. These sketches ranged from topics like the everyday struggles of Venezuelans to the mannerisms of president Chavez and his public gaffes. In one infamous series of skits, Chavez was rebaptized ‘Mico-mandante’ (Monkey in power), a play on his formal title ‘Mi comandante’ (My commander). Humorista Emilio Lovera interpreted the president and copied many of his mannerisms, particularly his distinctive slow drawl punctuated with vigorous exclamations. The sketch showed the president in his office as Lina Ron, one of his most fervent real-life supporters, attempted to inform the president of an imaginary threat. Instead, Lovera as Chavez settled into one of his long-winded monologues about his hometown in the rural state Barinas 1 Los 50 Años de La Rochela. POLITICAL SATIRE UNDER DIFFERENT POLITICAL REGIMES 5 which Venezuelans were often subjected to during his mandatory hours-long televised speeches.3 In another skit, Radio Rochela mercilessly mocked one of Chavez’s more public gaffe – when he erroneously conjugated a misspelled verb during a televised transmission of Mission: Robinson, his adult literacy program.4 5 This barefaced attempt to censor both the media and satirists did not

    Colloquy Vol. 12, Fall 2016, pp. 101-114 PC Is Back in South Park: Framing Social Issues through Satire Alex Dejean Abstract This study takes an extensive look at the television program South Park episode “Stunning and Brave.” There is limited research that explores the use of satire to create social discourse on concepts related to political correctness. I use framing theory as a primary variable to understand the messages “Stunning and Brave” attempts to convey. Framing theory originated from the theory of agenda setting. Agenda setting explains how media depictions affect how people think about the world. Framing is an aspect of agenda setting that details the organization and structure of a narrative or story. Framing is such an important variable to agenda setting that research on framing has become its own field of study. Existing literature of framing theory, comedy, and television has shown how audiences perceive issues once they have been exposed to media messages. The purpose of this research will review relevant literature explored in this area to examine satirical criticism on the social issue of political correctness. It seems almost unnecessary to point out the effect media has on us every day. Media is a broad term for the collective entities and structures through which messages are created and transmitted to an audience. As noted by Semmel (1983), “Almost everyone agrees that the mass media shape the world around us” (p. 718). The media tells us what life is or what we need for a better life. We have been bombarded with messages about what is better.

It is negatively perceived, and it is considered to undermine democracy and violate human rights. As a rule, it is a feature that characterises conservative societies, totalitarian regimes, as well as individuals with ideological preconceptions. The areas mostly affected by it include freedom of expression and free movement of ideas. Governments try to ward themselves against this phenomenon in various manners, in particular by establishing laws that protect human goods and moral values, as those have been shaped from the Age of Enlightenment onwards. However, in recent years, in the midst of the rapid dissemination of technology and the swift development of social media, a tendency has emerged consisting in trying to influence the unsuspecting public opinion and resulting in excluding from the public sphere opinions which are not pleasant to part of the media users, often serving “external” interests. Therefore, the online medium, free par excellence and offering, in principle, the possibility to everyone to publicly and courageously express their opinions, hinders and becomes an obstacle to the dissemination of “another” opinion, in spite of this dissemination being the ultimate intellectual feature of contemporary societies. This type of censorship has now been included in the long list of the many aspects of the phenomenon seen to this day.

The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 were a devastating shock to the United States. They alerted Americans to the new threat of non-state actors. National Security had been severely damaged, and the new threat provoked the U.S. to enter into a problematic war in the Middle East region. Immediately after the attacks, the “blame game” began. Though there are seventeen organizations in the United States intelligence community, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) suffered the worst criticism for their roles in failing to prevent the attacks. The Bush administration established the 9/11 Commission in order to investigate what went wrong and to determine how to fix it. Based on the recommendations provided by the Commission, various organizations were changed and/or created in the intelligence community. Out of many changes, two were the most significant.

It provides a brief overview of the rise of anti-Muslim and anti-Islam sentiment known as “Islamophobia”, and it investigates claims that American Muslims cannot be trusted to be loyal to the United States because of their religion. This research examines American Muslim perspectives on national security discourse regarding terrorism and radicalization, both domestic and foreign, after 9/11. The article argues that it is important to highlight developments, both progressive and conservative, in Muslim communities in the United States over the last 12 years that belie suspicions of widespread anti-American sentiment among Muslims or questions about the loyalty of American Muslims. The article concludes with a discussion of important shifts from a Muslim identity politics that disassociated from American identity and ‘American exceptionalism’ to a position of integration and cultural assimilation.
