Abstract: The lipid and fatty acid compositions of the muscle and liver of adult and juvenile black rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, and that of its stomach contents were examined to clarify its lipid characteristic and the difference between aquacultured and wild samples. Triacylglycerols were the dominant depot lipids of all samples, while phospholipids, such as phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylcholine, were found to be the major components in the polar lipids. The cultured juvenile and young samples had high levels of 18:2n- 6 (linoleic acid, 5.0% and 4.0–5.9% for TAG of juvenile and young samples) with low levels of 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid: DHA, 9.7% and 3.3–6.7% for TAG of juvenile and young samples), whereas the adults (both cultured and wild) had only trace levels of 18:2n-6 (0.6–1.3% and 1.0–1.3% for TAG of cultured and wild samples) with noticeable levels of DHA (3.3–19.7% and 5.2–11.9% for TAG of cultured and wild samples). Similar to the fatty acid profiles in TAG of both cultured and wild adult samples, those in the phospholipids of both the samples were very similar to each other.

Goldsworthy1, 2 1Sea Mammal Ecology Group, Zoology Department, La Trobe University, Bundoora Campus, Victoria 3086, Australia 2Present address: South Australian Research and Development Institute (Aquatic Sciences), PO Box 120, Henley Beach, South Australia 5022, Australia ABSTRACT: Adult male, female and juvenile New Zealand and Australian fur seals Arctocephalus forsteri and A. pusillus doriferus regularly return to colonies, creating the potential for intra- and inter-specific foraging competition in nearby waters. We hypothesise that the fur seals in this study utilise different prey, thereby reducing competition and facilitating coexistence. We analysed scats and regurgitates from adult male, female and juvenile New Zealand fur seals and adult male Aus- tralian fur seals and compared prey remains found in the samples. Most prey consumed by adult male and female fur seals occur over the continental shelf or shelf break, less than 200 km from Cape Gantheaume. Adult female fur seals utilised proportionally more low-energy prey such as large squid and medium-sized fish. The adult female diet reflected that of a generalist predator, dictated by prey abundance and their dependant pups’ fasting abilities. In contrast, adult male New Zealand and Aus- tralian fur seals consumed proportionally more energy-rich prey such as large fish or birds, most likely because they could more efficiently access and/or handle such prey. All the monogeneans registered are associated with 363 vertebrate host taxa, and distributed in 498 localities pertaining to 29 of the 32 states of the Mexican Republic. Th e checklist contains updated information on their hosts, habitat, and distributional records. We revise the species list according to current schemes of KEY WORDS classifi cation for the group. Th e checklist also included the published records in the last 11 years, Platyhelminthes, Mexico, since the latest list was made in 2006. We also included taxon mentioned in thesis and informal distribution, literature. As a result of our review, numerous records presented in the list published in 2006 were Actinopterygii, modifi ed since inaccuracies and incomplete data were identifi ed. Even though the inventory of the Elasmobranchii, Anura, monogenean fauna occurring in Mexican vertebrates is far from complete, the data contained in our Testudines.

Therefore, knowledge of the dietary requirements of fish species that inhabit seagrass beds represents one of the essential components in understanding the significance of seagrass, which can help ensure that appropriate conservation measures for this habitat are implemented. This study focuses on the importance of seagrass in the diet of H. melanochir, an important commercial and recreational fish species of southern Australia that is often targeted over seagrass beds. Previous studies on the diet of H. melanochir have been based mainly on gut content analyses, which revealed that a substantial volume indeed consisted of zosteracean seagrass (Z. muelleri or Z. tasmanica) (Ling, 1956; Thomson, 1957a; Robertson & Klumpp, 1983; Klumpp & Nichols, 1983; Edgar & Shaw, 1995b). Hyporhamphus melanochir appear to be one of only a few fish species that ingest seagrass in large quantities (Edgar & Shaw, 1995b) and they are also an important prey for commercial fishes (Western Australian salmon, Thomson, 1957a; mulloway, Kailola et al., 1993; snook, Bertoni, 1995), and coastal water birds (large black cormorant, Mack, 1941; little penguin, Klomp & Wooller, 1988; Australasian gannet, Bunce, 2001; crested tern, pers.observ.), thus apparently representing a pathway for seagrass to higher trophic levels.
