My German-Jewish Legacy and Theirs Anthony Heilbut This German-Jewish legacy, how German is it? and how Jewish? Moreover, what kind of Germans? what sort of Jews? Who inherits this legacy, a Joseph or a Judah? What legacy do our Joseph and Judah select? Surely not the same one. It's typically German, typically Jew- ish, typically German-Jewish to stress the uniqueness of one's group, attended by an inexorable ambivalence, another specialty of the three groups in question. A perfectly straightforward issue is posed, and immediately my tone seems captious. I have two explanations: a general one-I'm upset by any form of cultural nationalism-and one more immediate: A few months ago, I spoke with a young German. He was both effusive in his praise of German Jewry and obsequious in his apology for crimes committed years before his birth. (In Germany, wallowing in guilt and self-pity seems as timeless as bad taste.) Finally he revealed his agenda: "Let's face it," he said. "Germans are the best people, and Jews make the best Germans." Aha, I thought, there you go. We're either the best or not good enough. Much about the German-Jewish legacy eludes facile generalization, starting with the question of Germanness. Consider my family's com- plicated roots. The son of a Hamburg father and a London mother, my father was born in Amsterdam. Maritime links between his parents' cities helped make the Hamburgers spirited Anglophiles. For Ham- burg Jews as well, British connections added a whiff of cosmopolitan style, particularly during the nineteenth century when German--or German-Jewish-identity was newly formed and tentative. -

Using a methodology based on Judith Butler’s gender theory, it examines how femininity is perceived and presented and argues that clothes are essential to female characterisation and both the perpetuation and breakdown of gender stereotypes. -

This will be done from the point of view of deconstructing stereotypical representations of Indian women as they appear in westocentric practices. -

Course description This course will explore conceptualizations of gender and sexuality in the German-speaking world from the late nineteenth century to the modern day. Using cultural texts, literary works and film, students will examine a number of ‘moments’ in German history, including Sigmund Freud’s writings on women and psychology, Magnus Hirschfeld’s work on homosexuality, the relationships between masculinity and militarism, post-war German feminism on both sides of the Iron Curtain and transgender identity in multicultural Germany today. Course policies • All assignments must be completed to pass this course. • All assignments must be turned in by the stated due date. Your grade is lowered by three percentage points for every calendar day it is late (this includes Saturday and Sunday!). Thirty Years of Collecting Our History – Or: How to Find Treasure Troves ALMS Conference, Amsterdam, August 1-3, 2012 Ralf Dose, Magnus Hirschfeld Society, Berlin When founded in 1982/83, the Magnus Hirschfeld Society’s aim was to preserve the heritage of the sexual scientist Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) for posterity, and to do research on his work. At that time, this was connected with the aim of the GL(BT) movement, which was to claim a history of its own. When looking more closely into the matter of the work and achievements of Dr. Hirschfeld, we soon noticed that the focus on GL(BT) history was far too narrow to capture the importance of Hirschfeld both for sexual science and for cultural history. 1 My paper explores some of the steps we took in finding the material remnants of Hirschfeld’s cultural heritage over some thirty years of research and collecting. It should be read together with the corresponding paper by Don McLeod on “Serendipity and the Papers of Magnus Hirschfeld: The Case of Ernst Maass,” where he gives a lot of detail about one of our joint searches. And, please, keep in mind that my English is not as good as my German. Thus, the German version of this paper sometimes is more specific than this one. 2 Preface When we started to look for Hirschfeld’s heritage, it was a common belief that hardly anything of Hirschfeld’s personal belongings or items from his Institute for Sexual Science would have survived. Manfred Herzer compiled a preliminary short list of single Hirschfeld letters which survived in various archives, libraries, and private collections. -

ABSTRACT Title of Document: BILDUG AND GENDER IN NINETEENTH- CENTURY BOURGEOIS GERMANY: A CULTURAL STUDIES ANALYSIS OF TEXTS BY WOMEN WRITERS Cauleen Suzanne Gary, PhD, 2008 Directed By: Professor Elke P. Frederiksen, Department of Germanic Studies Throughout the course of the nineteenth century, the German Bildungsbürgertum used the civic and inner components of Bildung defined by Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767-1835) as a means to characterize its social identity and prominence. Together with the transitions related to the industrialization of society in the second half of the century, the German intellectual middle class recognized the changes of Bildung that adapted to the expansion of the bourgeois public sphere but simultaneously upheld the construction of the “eternal feminine” that emerged during the period of Weimar Classicism around 1800. Therefore, the idea of Bildung became associated with the cultural reality of young men. This event leads to the question: If bourgeois society excluded women from the process of inner and civic Bildung , how did women in return view themselves as members of the Bildungsbürgertum ? Drawing on both the inner and civic aspects of Bildung , this project investigates the interrelationship of Bildung and gender as portrayed in a variety of literary and non-literary texts. Selected writings by Fanny Lewald (1811-1889), Hedwig Dohm (1833-1919), Franziska Tiburtius (1843-1927), Gabriele Reuter (1859- 1941), and Ricarda Huch (1864-1947) reveal that many women created new interpretations of Bildung that were quite different from the mainstream conception defined by the male public voice. In addition, a variety of texts from the nineteenth- century press shows how women simultaneously raised awareness of the gender paradox in Bildung in mainstream bourgeois culture, particularly by women associated with the nineteenth-century German bourgeois women’s movement. -

ABSTRACT Women’s perception of university education and professional life during the period 1900 to 1945 is the focus of this study. In order to examine these perceptions, the thesis undertakes a close textual analysis of autobiographical writings by two medical doctors, Rahel Straus (1880-1963) and Charlotte Wolff (1897-1986) and the aviator Elly Beinhorn (1907-2007). The images employed in these texts indicate the intricate ways that individual women in the professions define their sense of who they are in relation to their surroundings and how that sense may shift in different settings and at different times, or may ostensibly not shift at all. I have developed a differentiated language for the purposes of articulating the fluidity. This language allows me to take apart narrative levels and to examine the importance that is attached to gender in relation to religion, race, nationality, sexuality and professional identities. -
