The Canon Cat After of Release Before Macintosh
LORI EMERSON & FINN BRUNTON THE CANON CAT PROCESSING ADVANCED WORK In the fall of 2014, Finn Brunton, an assistant professor at NYU, contacted Lori Emerson, Director of the Media Archaeology Lab (MAL) at the University of Colorado, Boulder, about a rare fi nd he came across on ebay: a Canon Cat, which billed itself in 1986 as an “advanced work processor.” The MAL wasn’t immediately able to purchase the machine; however, Brunton purchased the Canon Cat with the agreement that he’d experiment with the Canon Cat for six months or so, sell it to the MAL, and then he and Emerson would co-write a piece – now, this piece – on the obscure machine from an ever-more distant past. Here, we hope to give you a glimpse into what computing could have been and still could be. 353 [SHIFT]+[DOCUMENT] [SHIFT]+[DOCUMENT] Who will the user be? Playing Your Favorite Arcade Games in MAME at Home Is a Lot of Fun, but What Happens When You're Forced to Leave the House?
Playing your favorite arcade games in MAME at home is a lot of fun, but what happens when you’re forced to leave the house? (Hey, it happens.) If your friends and relatives are tired of you reconfiguring their computers and installing MAME every time you visit, or your boss has your workstation locked down so you can’t install any new software, what you need is a bootable MAME CD. Bootable MAME CDs allow you to boot computers from a CD directly into MAME. An operating system (usually a flavor of Linux), MAME, and all your game ROMs are contained directly on the disc, so the computer’s hard drive is never even accessed. While several flavors of these MAME Boot CDs such as (XMAME and KnoppiXMAME) have been created and are freely available for download via the Internet, the best and most complete solution is a package called AdvanceCD, named so because it also includes AdvanceMAME and the frontend AdvanceMENU. Getting AdvanceCD to work could not be simpler. First, users need to download the installation files from the official AdvanceCD website (http://advancemame.sourceforge.net), Once the files have been downloaded and unzipped, users can copy their MAME ROMs of choice to the proper directory. The custom Linux kernal used in AdvanceCD takes up around 20mb of space, so that will leave you approximately 680mb of room for your games on a standard 80 minute CD-R. If that’s not enough space for you, AdvanceCD also supports DVD-Rs and USB devices! Once you’ve copied over the ROMs you wish to include on your image, all you need to do is run the included utilities to create a bootable CD image (both Linux scripts and DOS batch files are included to create the bootable ISO). -

A Brief History of Software Engineering Niklaus Wirth ([email protected]) (25.2.2008)
1 A Brief History of Software Engineering Niklaus Wirth ([email protected]) (25.2.2008) Abstract We present a personal perspective of the Art of Programming. We start with its state around 1960 and follow its development to the present day. The term Software Engineering became known after a conference in 1968, when the difficulties and pitfalls of designing complex systems were frankly discussed. A search for solutions began. It concentrated on better methodologies and tools. The most prominent were programming languages reflecting the procedural, modular, and then object-oriented styles. Software engineering is intimately tied to their emergence and improvement. Also of significance were efforts of systematizing, even automating program documentation and testing. Ultimately, analytic verification and correctness proofs were supposed to replace testing. More recently, the rapid growth of computing power made it possible to apply computing to ever more complicated tasks. This trend dramatically increased the demands on software engineers. Programs and systems became complex and almost impossible to fully understand. The sinking cost and the abundance of computing resources inevitably reduced the care for good design. Quality seemed extravagant, a loser in the race for profit. But we should be concerned about the resulting deterioration in quality. Our limitations are no longer given by slow hardware, but by our own intellectual capability. From experience we know that most programs could be significantly improved, made more reliable, economical and comfortable to use. The 1960s and the Origin of Software Engineering It is unfortunate that people dealing with computers often have little interest in the history of their subject. -
300 Baud Issue 03
#3 Well, well, well! We actually did it and we find ourselves back for another issue. #"6% Its been hard going but it is now complete and in your hands. Once again thanks to everyone that made this possible, the writers in particular who gave up their time and creative efforts. And another thanks to the people who came out of the woodwork between issues to offer VCF-GB REPORT a hand in other ways. All going well we will march on forwards, towards issue four, but AN EXHIBITOR’S PERSPECTIVE honestly, we cant do it without you. Really. MARK WICKENS Going back a bit to last issue, it is worth throwing out a “Congratulations!!!” to Derek, who won the Atomic Robot competition. Well done Derek for walking to the post office and being randomly chosen! From my perspective receiving the post cards, it very was nice seeing stamps from different parts of the world. It seems I can pretty much geek out about anything. Thanks for sharing. Anyway back to this issue. As always we As the cat winks at me from a cushion on the sofa, and Stevie Wonder sings have some things of ‘everything is all right’ I start penning my thoughts on the first ‘official’ Vintage interest to the newbie Computer Festival in the UK, *ever*. Having never quite made it to VCF-E (the and to the hardcore geek. At one end of European VCF held in Munich every year in the Spring) and after my own DEC the spectrum, Gavin Legacy Event in aid of the National Museum of Computing, it seemed appropriate Picknell returns to to show up with my DEC gear at an event geared firmly towards the masses.
