Okimoto1 and Victoria L. Brescoll1 Abstract Two experimental studies examined the effect of power-seeking intentions on backlash toward women in political office. It was hypothesized that a female politician’s career progress may be hindered by the belief that she seeks power, as this desire may violate prescribed communal expectations for women and thereby elicit interpersonal penalties. Results suggested that voting preferences for female candidates were negatively influenced by her power-seeking intentions (actual or perceived) but that preferences for male candidates were unaffected by power-seeking intentions. These differential reactions were partly explained by the perceived lack of communality implied by women’s power-seeking intentions, resulting in lower perceived competence and feelings of moral outrage. The presence of moral-emotional reactions suggests that backlash arises from the violation of communal prescriptions rather than normative deviations more generally. These findings illuminate one potential source of gender bias in politics. As a result, this thesis is mainly concerned with the capacity of words, iterated within the archive of social media, to haunt us— both culturally and informatically. Through hauntology, this study hopes to understand a modern discourse community that is bound by an epideictic framework that specializes in the deconstruction of the individual’s ethos via the constant demonization and incitement of past, current, and possible social media expressions. The primary goal of this study is to understand how these practices function within a capitalistic framework and mirror the performativity of capital by reducing affective human interactions to that of a transaction. -

The study used the convenience sampling of corporate employees who use collective intelligence from corporate panel members (n = 1500). Collective intelligence was found to affect work process, operations, and service innovation. When corporate employees work in an environment where collective intelligence (CI) is highly developed, work procedures or efficiency may differ depending on the onset of CI. This raises the importance of CI within an organization and implies the importance of finding means to vitalize CI. This study provides significant implications for corporations utilizing collective intelligence services, such as online communities. Firstly, such corporations vitalize their services by raising the quality of information and knowledge shared in their workplaces; and secondly, contribution motivations that consider the characteristics of knowledge and information contributors require further development. Because I, like you, am strongly religious, and strongly at odds with much that passes as acceptable behavior in my society and in the wider world, I feel a kinship with you. If we were to have a conversation, we would probably both learn something useful. This is an invitation. 2. What I would not learn from you—what I would not listen to you on—is how-where-when to use violence in advancing my cause. The Bible and the Qur’an preach persuasion for the advance of religion, and condemn violence as a means of promoting one’s religion or demoting the religion of another. In religion, violence is not power; it is the unwitting admission of rhetorical weakness. 3. I would listen in hope of hearing your deepest voice, the voice of your hurting and caring and loving and hoping. And if I could help you hear my deepest voice, we just might hearken together to a third Voice—the Voice always calling us to hear that we are brothers and have work to do together for the glory of God and the good of humanity and of the good earth. 4. Finally, as a Christian, I would want to remind you thatJesus chose to suffer violence rather than to become violent--and he did not lose out for his choice. -

In the foreground is MALIZAR. He is a tall, lanky, and worn-looking evil wizard in a scarred, leathery cloak. Bathed in shadow behind Malizar is his army of gruesome fiends, both human and non-human. CAPTION (top of page): In the time before the Three Crown War, before the lands of Trygia were forever lost, vast armies of unfathomable creatures battled for the right to shape the four realms in their image. The commanders of these warring factions were two wicked spell-casters of indescribable power. CAPTION (beside Malizar): Malizar the Bloodthirsty ruled legions of cruel beasts and hideous undead fiends. His mastery of the dark arts was rivaled by that of only one other. PANEL TWO – EXT. DARK BATTLEFIELD – NIGHT This panel makes up the second half of the page. In a similar setting, we see KALKUS in the foreground. He is a stocky, crook-nosed man with wild hair and an ornate feathered cloak. Bathed in similar shadow behind him is another similar army of creatures. CAPTON: (beside Kalkus): Kalkus the Dark was the only wizard to oppose Malizar’s reign and live. He ruled over an entire kingdom of twisted, otherworldly beings and wraith-like warlocks. CAPTION: (bottom of page): The two dark masters collided on countless occasions. Each confrontation brought about immense turmoil, painting entire mountains red with inhuman blood. Still, neither man would yield. -

Collective Intelligence and the Blockchain

But each blockchain is also a community and a social experiment, built around social consensus. Here I discuss three examples showing how collective intelligence can help, threat or capitalize on blockchain- based ecosystems. They concern the immutability of smart contracts, code transparency and new forms of property. The examples show that more research, new norms and, eventually, laws are needed to manage the interaction between collective behaviour and the blockchain technology. Insights from researchers in collective intelligence can help society rise up to the challenge. For most people, blockchain technology is about on-chain consensus. And it certainly is. A blockchain provides users with a method and incentives for validating and storing a value or transaction without the need to trust a central authority, or any other participants in the system. Once approved, the transaction is recorded in an open ledger that cannot be altered retroactively. Since the system is trustless, everyone can join the network and read, write, or participate within the blockchain (in this article, I am considering only public and permissionless blockchains).1 But a public blockchain is not a self-contained universe. As a socio-technical system, its life extents behind the user base. For example, a blockchain can provide competition to existent socio-economic players, and it is shaped by what users do with it and, eventually, by the law.2, 3 Continuous updates and strategic decisions are therefore required to keep up with such a rapidly evolving landscape, meaning that blockchains are not self-sufficient. -

Collective Intelligence: An Overview What is Collective Intelligence? The Internet has given rise to some remarkable technologies that enable people to collaborate en masse. In barely a decade, the biggest encyclopaedia in human history has been written by millions of authors with no centralised control. In under a year, ordinary people classified more than 50 million photos of distant worlds to help astronomers understand how galaxies are formed. All over the world, organisations are starting to open up social networks and collaborative environments from which emanate an endless stream of data and insight. The potential that lies within interconnected networks of computers and humans is only just starting to be realised. We all possess intelligence. However, intelligence can be thought of not only as something that arises within human brains – it also arises in groups of people. This is Collective Intelligence – individuals acting together to combine their knowledge and insight. Collective Intelligence is an emergent property. It emerges from the group, it does not reside within any individual members. The Wisdom of Crowds is simply another term for Collective Intelligence, stemming from the work of British scientist Sir Francis Galton. At a livestock exhibition in 1906, Galton observed a competition where people had to guess the weight of an ox. At the end of the contest, Galton gathered all the guesses and calculated the average. The crowd’s estimate turned out to be near perfect. Galton referred to this as the collective wisdom of the crowd: the fact that groups of people can be more intelligent than an intelligent individual and that groups do not always require intelligent people to reach a smart decision or outcome. -

Observatorio (OBS*) Journal, 5 (2008), 041-055 1646-5954/ERC123483/2008 041 iVision and the BBC: Building Public Value Michael Klontzas, City University, London, UK Abstract Breaking with conventional wisdom that sees public service broadcasters as conveyors of content in line with historically shaped socio-political ideals, centred on quality, access, diversity and independence, evidence suggests that PSB is often the driving force behind key technological innovations serving public policy aims. In the drive towards wholesale digitalisation and the accelerated introduction of an information society, this hitherto understated function is now deemed critical and comes to the fore. More specifically, recent public policy initiatives in the UK, culminating to the 2006 White Paper, openly assign the mission of contributing to the process of ‘building digital Britain’ to the BBC, the flagship public service broadcaster. This vision of digitalisation is defined in broad terms in the policy discourse, as involving all platforms indiscriminately. The BBC’s contribution, designed to entice users to a digital future and simultaneously cement the continued relevancy of the institution in the 21st century, finds expression in a variety of implemented and proposed digital services deliverable over a range of digital platforms, including television and radio, the internet and mobile networks. This paper seeks to interrogate the host of controversial and closely scrutinised internet services offered by the BBC in the light of the digital vision articulated in the public policy discourse. These services shift the emphasis away from the time-honoured broadcasting paradigm to a more interactive approach. Through widespread application of emerging Web 2.0 practices, the users are now invited to participate, and generate and share their own content. -

SCMS 2011 MEDIA CITIZENSHIP • Conference Program and Screening Synopses The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans • March 10–13, 2011 • SCMS 2011 Letter from the President Welcome to New Orleans and the fabulous Ritz-Carlton Hotel! On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our members, professional staff, and volunteers who have put enormous time and energy into making this conference a reality. This is my final conference as SCMS President, a position I have held for the past four years. Prior to my presidency, I served two years as President-Elect, and before that, three years as Treasurer. As I look forward to my new role as Past-President, I have begun to reflect on my near decade-long involvement with the administration of the Society. Needless to say, these years have been challenging, inspiring, and expansive. We have traveled to and met in numerous cities, including Atlanta, London, Minneapolis, Vancouver, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. We celebrated our 50th anniversary as a scholarly association. We planned but unfortunately were unable to hold our 2009 conference at Josai University in Tokyo. We mourned the untimely death of our colleague and President-Elect Anne Friedberg while honoring her distinguished contributions to our field. We planned, developed, and launched our new website and have undertaken an ambitious and wide-ranging strategic planning process so as to better position SCMS to serve its members and our discipline today and in the future. At one of our first strategic planning sessions, Justin Wyatt, our gifted and hardworking consultant, asked me to explain to the Board why I had become involved with the work of the Society in the first place.
