Sociology 342-001: Criminology Summer II: July 8 – Aug. 7 2013 Online - 3 credits Instructor Office Hours Kate Gunby via email and gchat [email protected] or by appointment in Social Sciences 426 Course Description This course begins with a quick introduction to the multidisciplinary study of criminology, and how crime and criminal behavior are measured. Then the class will explore different theories of crime and criminality, starting with early schools of criminology and then covering structural, social process, critical, psychosocial, biosocial, and developmental theories. Then the class will focus on different types of crime, including violent crime, sex crimes, multiple murder and terrorism, property crime, public order crime, and white collar and organized crime. Finally, we will broaden our scope to explore victim experiences, mental health and incarceration, concepts of justice and incarceration trends, and the consequences of crime and incarceration. This course uses the acclaimed television series The Wire to explore the fundamentals of criminology. Students will develop their ability analyze, synthesize, apply, and evaluate the course material through written memos linking each reading to the content in a specific episode of The Wire. Students will further engage with the material and each other through online forum discussions. This class is guided by student goals, which are established from the beginning and reviewed throughout the term. Readings All of the course readings are on D2L. You do not need to buy any books. Almost all of the readings are excerpts from books or articles, so please download the readings from D2L so that you only read the portions that are required for the class. -

It is done by establishing two objectives: the first is analyzing the movie based on structural elements of the movie and the second is analyzing the movie based on the psychoanalytic approach. This research is qualitative research. Type of data of the study is text and image taken from two data sources: primary and secondary. The primary data source is Remember Me movie directed by Allen Coulter released in 2010. While the secondary data sources are other materials taken from books, encyclopedia, and internet related to the study. Both data are collected through library research and analyzed by descriptive analysis. The study comes to the following conclusions. Firstly, based on the structural analysis of each elements, it shows that the character and characterization, casting, plot, setting, point of view, theme, mise-en scene, cinematography, sound and editing are related to each other and form the unity into good quality movie, secondly, based on the psychoanalytic analysis, there is a close relationship between the movie story and the reality condition of young man who falls in love. -

She was discovered while attending Westlake School for Girls in Bel Air, California, when actress Charlotte Rae and producer Norman Lear came to the school to authenticate scripts for their new show. Ms. Rae was so taken with the vivacious eighth grader she convinced producers to create a role for her. Mindy remained on the show for all nine seasons, also traveling to Paris and Australia with her co-stars to produce two successful television movies based on the series. Concurrently, with her role in Facts, Mindy played “Rose Jenko” in Fox’s 21 Jump Street. Other notable television appearances included Diff’rent Strokes, Double Trouble, Charles in Charge, Dream On and Suddenly Susan. In 1983, Mindy appeared in her first professional stage performance in Table Settings, written and directed by James Lapine and filmed for HBO Television. The illustrious cast included Eileen Heckart, Stockard Channing, Robert Klein, Peter Riegart, and Dinah Manoff. She went on to make her feature film debut in The Boy Who Could Fly, which co-starred Colleen Dewhurst, Fred Gwynne and Fred Savage. Mindy took a hiatus from her career to attend university, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Cultural Anthropology and a Masters in Education. During this time, she studied improvisation and scene work with Gary Austin and Larry Moss. -

Knowing Good Sex Pays Off: The Image of the Journalist as a Famous, Exciting and Chic Sex Columnist Named Carrie Bradshaw in HBO’s Sex and the City By Bibi Wardak Abstract New York Star sex columnist Carrie Bradshaw lives the life of a celebrity in HBO’s Sex and the City. She mingles with the New York City elite at extravagant parties, dates the city’s most influential men and enjoys the adoration of fans. But Bradshaw echoes the image of many female journalists in popular culture when it comes to romance. Bradshaw is thirty-something, unmarried and unsure about having children. Despite having a successful career and loyal friends, she feels unfulfilled after each failed romantic relationship. I. Introduction “A wildly successful career and a relationship -- I was afraid…women only get one or the other.”1 That’s a fear Carrie Bradshaw just can’t shake.
