The more observant may realise that the present house was actually only built in 1851, after the first two houses burnt down: in 1795 and 1849. Today Cliveden provides the most decadent ‘home from home’ for guests from all around the globe who appreciate the fact that they are always made PATH LESS to feel more ‘house guest’ than ‘hotel client’. The recent multi-million pound refurbishment has only added to the rich layers of history that make this iconic property completely unique in the hotel world. I would also argue that today’s house guests at Cliveden are luckier than ever when it comes to culinary delights. Although the gastronomic heart of the house is still ‘below stairs’, there is nothing old-fashioned about the state-of-the-art kitchen that André Garrett TRAVELLED now has to help him make the very most of his talents. André’s cooking style could not be more appropriate for such a salubrious venue, and like the new interior design he is not trying to be fashionable. The ‘Stop Press’ news is that Cliveden has been awarded the coveted title of AA Hotel of the Year. This is testament to the vision and deep pockets of its new owners and, of course, the team at Cliveden who have put so much energy and passion back into the house.

The overall goal of the project was to approach an understanding and a conceptualization of the artistic process of the dancer, tak- ing the work in the creation of Ina Christel Johannessen’s choreographic piece Edited by NOW SHE KNOWS as a point of departure. Anna Petronella Foultier and Cecilia Roos The focus was both that of the dancer from within the process, and that of external observers. These viewpoints were not deadlocked but rather aimed at an interaction and a dialogue between the theoretical and the practical levels. The research methods grew out of an at times quite intimate teamwork where the participants’ different approaches came to cross and intersect. A number of issues were explored: How does the dancer work in the pro- cess where the dance takes shape? How does the understanding of a movement material shift through the actual performing of it? What is it to understand * or experience a movement from the perspective of the performer? What is it to understand or experience a movement from the perspective of the specta- tor? What kind of body is the dancing body and how can it create a variety of meanings? Through what concepts are we to think the dancer’s practice and corporeality? The anthology contains essays by Cecilia Roos, Anna Petronella Foultier, Chrysa Parkinson, Katarina Elam, Cecilia Sjöholm, and Iréne Hultman.

    HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT Musical subtext in drama BRIGITTE BOGAR A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN MUSIC YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO September 2018 © Brigitte Bogar, 2018 Abstract This dissertation explores the manner in which music (songs, instrumental underscoring, and sound cues) support, reflect, and advance dramatic action. The dramaturgical analysis, employing Freytag’s model, is applied to selected dramatic repertoire to reveal the impact and influence of music on the dramatic structure of these works. The analysis considers how the musical nature of works by William Shakespeare, August Strindberg, George Bernard Shaw, Tom Stoppard and Simon Stephens also contributes to them becoming major sources for adaptations and for musicals on the modern stage. The importance of looking at authors, function, intended effects, production, context, message, and transmission modes must be stressed, as well as how to code/decode music and how musical meanings are generated through effective stimulation or through semiotics. The argument maintains that text and music cannot be separated without causing serious damage to the author’s creative vision and that the total structure of a play exists as an expression of artistic unity similar to Wagner’s concept of Gesamtkunstwerk. The text and music exist in a symbiotic relationship, sometimes as leitmotifs, with the non-diegetic music supporting emotions to reflect the inner world of their characters. The use of musical leitmotifs or music as thematic material clearly contributes in driving forward the dramatic action. Among the main findings are how the musical references made by any of the five playwrights determines the dramaturgical interpretation of their plays.
