5 WELCOME CHEWTON GLEN & CLIVEDEN MAGAZINE

Welcome 2016 is undoubtedly set to be a milestone for many reasons - however none are more important than the two big birthdays in the family!

Cliveden, home over the years to an earl, three countesses, two dukes, a Prince TAKE THE of Wales and the Viscounts Astor, will celebrate its 350th anniversary. The more observant may realise that the present house was actually only built in 1851, after the first two houses burnt down: in 1795 and 1849.

Today Cliveden provides the most decadent ‘home from home’ for guests from all around the globe who appreciate the fact that they are always made PATH LESS to feel more ‘house guest’ than ‘hotel client’. The recent multi-million pound refurbishment has only added to the rich layers of history that make this iconic property completely unique in the hotel world. I would also argue that today’s house guests at Cliveden are luckier than ever when comes to culinary delights. Although the gastronomic heart of the house is still ‘below stairs’, there is nothing old-fashioned about the state-of-the-art kitchen that André Garrett TRAVELLED now has to help him make the very most of his talents. André’s cooking style could not be more appropriate for such a salubrious venue, and like the new interior design he is not trying to be fashionable.

The ‘Stop Press’ news is that Cliveden has been awarded the coveted title of AA Hotel of the Year. This is testament to the vision and deep pockets of its new owners and, of course, the team at Cliveden who have put so much energy and passion back into the house. I like to think that we can safely say that Cliveden is well and truly back on the map!

Simultaneously, Chewton Glen is embarking on its 50th year as a hotel, although as a private residence it dates back almost 300 years to 1732, when a house first appeared on the site. Chewton Glen the hotel started life on 1st January 1966. Founder Martin Skan vividly recounts his first morning when he discovered his only chambermaid in bed with his only guest. Although he admits he had no hotel experience, he did have morals, and after asking both to leave immediately, he and his brother Trevor started their new business with no staff and no guests.

For many Chewton Glen was and still is the original country house hotel, and its unique balance between heritage and evolution has maintained its popularity over the years. Stories from the early days, along with anecdotes and recipes from the past five decades, have been captured in a commemorative book to mark this auspicious occasion. Chewton Glen’s only previous literary link was in 1847 when Captain Frederick Marryat published his last novel, The Children of the New Forest, inspired by visits to Chewton Glen when it was owned by his brother George.

Ultimately it is the relationship between place and people that has brought both houses to life, particularly those characters who have over the years made history themselves. Natalie Livingstone’s new book, The Mistresses of Cliveden, charts the lives (and loves) of those remarkable women who made the house famous through three centuries of scandal, power mongering and intrigue, from the Countess of Shrewsbury to Keeler.

Thankfully scandal appears to be a thing of the past, although both properties are still full of talented characters whose only desire is to make every house guest long to return. Birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, marriages, deals, decisions and meetings, and artistic premieres are a daily occurrence and history continues to be made at Cliveden and Chewton Glen every day.

The result (which can currently be viewed on Cliveden’s website) is an exercise in refurbishment overdrive: furniture wrapped and carried out, scaffolding careering up and down, people perpetually on the move and not a second of downtime. “During those three weeks we had two or three teams working 24/7,” Sue continues. “Scheduling was very tight, but there was such excitement about working on this project and such helpfulness that people came in on their days off, and there was a rolling up of sleeves at the last minute to deliver on time with only hours to spare. Mario adds: “We brought in a lot of grey hair experience to fuse together a seasoned team. There was an architect with a specialism in historic buildings and a historic building consultant to make sure details were spot on, and specialists all the way including French polishers, embroiderers, upholsterers, painting specialists, and a curatorial level of cleaning.” The result is glorious. It is still the Cliveden of old, only better. The Great Hall is a treat. Mario explains: “We deliberated over the Great Hall because this is a key space; on arrival there is an anticipation about what Cliveden is and the Great Hall has to deliver that. We wanted to celebrate its character and evoke something luxurious.” The elements were all there, the high panelled ceiling, magnificent ornate fireplace, Nancy Astor forever glancing over her shoulder in John Singer Sargent’s portrait, the series of tapestries (given to the Earl of Orkney by the Duke of Marlborough for his services in the Battle of Blenheim) that dominate the Hall... But they needed to be Great Hall brought together.

he Russian Far East is not a destination people expect when politely enquiring about your holiday plans. The area receives little popular attention, its significance relegated to bureaucratic whispers about strategic trade routes. Its Tcomplete lack of infrastructure, coupled with the requirement for special entry permission to the region, makes it almost inaccessible to tourists. And lying a staggering seven time zones away from its national capital, Moscow, it is certainly remote. Visions of bleak, windy tundra and fur-cloaked figures may come to mind, and its appeal to the modern traveller is not immediately obvious. So, in dinner party discussions and the publication of bucket list ‘must-sees’, the Russian Far East goes unmentioned. Yet in the edge of the world’s largest country, breathtaking occurrences happen every day: an orca breaches the Okhotsk Sea with an almighty splash or an idle volcano erupts, spewing molten red lava down its belly. However this landscape of almost primeval beauty can now be discovered, and in comfortable luxury. Since 2014, Silversea Expeditions, the luxury cruise line, has enabled many of us to see for ourselves an astonishing array of magical moments in one of the world’s least explored destinations, on board Silver Discoverer. This is the latest addition to Silversea’s fleet and one of the highest calibre expedition ships at sea, designed to navigate the remote, the tricky and the exciting. At just over 5,000 tonnes and accommodating only 120 guests, it provides a spacious yet intimate home from home. In addition to state-of-the-art equipment and design, there are high-end Zodiacs for coastal exploration and

A LIFE OF LUXURY THE DESIRABILITY OF BRAND BRITAIN - BY MICHELLE EMMERSON, CEO OF WALPOLE BRITISH LUXURY

ince its inception 25 years ago, Walpole has This expert craftsmanship is at the heart of all seen both the economic value of British luxury brands. To me, luxury signifies a product, service or experience that exudes quality, superior design and attention to detail; something aspirational and desired that makes you feel special For a brand, the customer experience is the most important thing and part of this is building intimacy. The story is crucial to engage the consumer on an emotional level, telling of the time, passion, skill and history that has gone into each and every piece. In fact, great storytelling is at the very heart of great British luxury companies, and brands have years of heritage and fascinating stories to tell. This is what makes them so unique. We have them to thank for upholding the standards of British luxury and creating prestige all over the world. More discreet than their European counterparts, these brand qualities, which are steeped in tradition and heritage, increasingly appeal to discerning customers in leading markets such as the United States, Europe and China. The opportunity to go behind the scenes of an atelier, to see the journey from sketch to product, is extremely desirable. Savile Row tailors, where skills are passed down over time, excel at this. Gouache proves to be the perfect medium for the anxious. You can take risks with bold colour and wash off errors, the cartridge paper taking a surprising amount of punishment. Day three is when it all comes together. We learn to mix oil paints to produce an infinitesimal range of colours. We are given artistic tips on mixing shades to achieve the hues of beach and sea, and how combining them creates the effect of wave over sand. We are shown how the colours of the landscape leak into cloud, and how to achieve dark headland shades. This is a satisfying but curiously imprecise art for beginners; many of my colours look like variations on khaki. More practise required. This, our final day, also includes a simple lunch at the Tate before returning to the studio to complete our paintings. I leave with two oils of strong skies and big waves, a colourful gouache, four moody charcoal drawings, the makings of a useful sketchbook and renewed determination to paint. In my head I could be another Ken Howard (who has a studio in Cornwall, another in London and a third on the Grand Canal, Venice). I can dream.
