LEARNING PHASES Learning Activities Timeframe A. Introduction Day 1 In this lesson you will learn the use of technology in the conduct of survey Panimula to find out the following: • Elements to be observed in planting trees • Market demands for fruits • Famous orchard farms in the country. Growing fruit trees requires lots of things, but your efforts will be rewarded with a delicious crop of mangoes, jackfruit, bananas, or another tasty treat. To obtain good harvests, you need to understand the different environmental factors that affect the growth of trees. The natural habitat of a given tree is a combination of environmental factors favorable to its complete development. These include the physical and chemical properties of the soil, air, light, rainfall, temperature, gravity as well as other plants and animals. Elements to be observed in planting trees 1. 1. Proper care of plants and soil a. a. Choose the best place for planting b. b. Choose the best seeds that best suit the season and the soil. c. c. Put sufficient fertilizers in the soil before planting. 2. d. Take care of the soil and the plants regularly. 3. 2. Methods of planting- different trees are planted in different ways: a. a. Direct planting- the seed or any propagating part of a plant is directly planted in the soil where it will germinate and grow into full-grown trees. b. b. Indirect planting- the newly germinated seedlings are allowed to grow in the nursery until such time that they are ready to be transplanted in the field. 4. 3. Preparing seeds for planting-different seeds have different preparation before planting ex. Placing the seeds under the sun, removed from their hard shells before planting, dried before planting, soaked in water, etc. 5. 4. Preparation of seedlings before planting a. a. Thinning- to produce strong plants, pull out some crowded seedlings. b. b. Pricking- this is done when transferring seedlings from one seed box to another to provide more space for proper development. c. c. Hardening-the process of gradual exposure of seedlings to sunlight which is done 7 to 15 days before transplanting. Market Demands for Fruits To ensure success in selling fruits, the farmer or seller should consider the following market demands: 1. Buyer selects fruits and other products of good quality, usually based Suggested IV. LEARNING PHASES Learning Activities Timeframe on size, shape and appearance. 2. Good quality fruits have the same appearance, size, stage of maturity, state of freshness and shape. 3. Fruits should be in the freshest state when being sold. They can command higher prices. 4. Pack fruits properly in good container to maintain their freshness and to avoid cuts, bruises, and blemishes. 5. Price your products based on the current price on the market. Going with the current market price makes your product competitive. Successful Orchard Growers in the Philippines If you get to know the success stories of our country’s top orchard growers, you would never imagine how they got to where they are now. Their hard work, determination, and will to succeed are truly worth emulating. Here are some of the well-known successful orchard growers in our country: Editha Aguinaldo Dacuycuy- Manang Editha ventured into the dragon fruit business when she was told how the fruit can help relieve constipation problems – a condition common to cerebral palsy patients. Her daughter, Kate, was suffering from this ailment. Selling at Php 450.00 per kilo, dragon fruit was too expensive for Editha, so she decided to raise her own fruits in their backyard. From a small plot, they now own a 10-hectare property. Dubbed as “Dragon Lady”, Manang Editha, together with her husband and daughter, Mimie Mildred), also expanded their business into dragon fruit ice cream, vegan dragon fruit lumpia, wine, vinegar, and even empanadita, dumplings, and burger patties. Located in Barangay Paayas, Burgos, Ilocos Norte, REFMAD Farms (Rare Eagle Forest Marine and agricultural Development) is now an agritourism showcase offering research and livelihood training to fellow Ilocanos and interested farmers. Patricio Base – With his 3-hectare plantation of watermelons, honeydew melons, and papaya, he produces crops year-round in Alicia, Isabela. He was able to send his four children to college with his earnings. He used to grow rice before venturing into watermelons. He said there was no money in planting rice, but now with melons, one can even hit the jackpot. In July 2013, he planted Diana watermelons in 3,500 square meters and got 12 tons worth Php 480.00. Senen Banani- A former Department of Agriculture (DA) head of La Fuerta Inc. With his eagerness to help the community in Mindanao, he converted his land into a banana plantation that produces 5 to 6 million boxes of cavendish bananas and exports them to Middle East and other Asian Countries. Desiree Duran of Duran Farm and Agribusiness Center in San Ildefonso , Bulacan- With her desire to learn about farming, Ms. Duran involved herself in various agribusiness seminars and trainings. She then converted her land into a tomato plantation and involved her community in the production. Besides producing high quality fruits and vegetables, the center also trains and teaches on modern agricultural technology. Suggested IV. LEARNING PHASES Learning Activities Timeframe Jose Mercado of Agricultural Corporation. As a young boy, he was already exposed to the coffee farming in Batangas. He continues this business because he knew that coffee business will make him successful. It actually gives him better life. As one of the pioneers in the coffee industry in Batangas, he embarked on the high quality of their coffee beans and roasting techniques, He, likewise, developed his own blend, Café de Lipa for its flavor and aroma, beside the popular brands Batangas Brew and Kapeng Barako. Famous Orchard Farms in the Country 1. Rosa Farms – A sprawling 12.5-hectare farm located at Km. 156 National Highway, San Marcelino-San Antonio Boundary, Zambales. The property was purchased by David Jacson and Rosa Magsaysay way back in the 1920s. It was originally called Linoron Farm in reference to a nearby river. When Mt. Pinatubo volcano erupted in 1991, the whole place was buried in ash, leaving only a few surviving mango trees. They rehabilitated and developed the farm into a mango orchard. By 2011, the farm was renamed as Rosa Farms under the management of Ding and Nelda Zulueta. Today, it is not just an ordinary mango orchard but an agri- tourism destination, as well as venue for team building, and corporate events, camping and family outing, educational tours, rest and recreation. 2. Gapuz Grapes Farms – Cirilo Gapuz started the business in the 1980s to provide for his family. Thirty years on, the farm has produced beyond expectations. The family also helped neighboring famers and interested locals in planting grapes. The farm is in Barangay Urayong,Bauang, La Union. 3. Rock Farm – if you are an orange lover - from sunkist, hamlin, and ponkan variety – then visit Rock Farm at Café Bodega in Staunton Road, Sagada, Mountain Province. Entrance fee is Php. 50.00 ( you can eat as much as you want inside the farm). Orange picking season is from November to February. 4. Philippine Mango Seedling Farm Corp. ( PMSFC)- A family-owned and operated agricultural enterprise situated in the border of Candaba, Pampanga and Baliuag, Bulacan. The company was established mainly for three objectives: 1.) environmental preservation through youth education; 2.) strengthening of the mango industry by ensuring the constant and sustainable supply of mango produce; and 3.) livelihood enhancement through corporate involvement by promoting mango farming. B. Development Day 2 Learning Task 1 Draw a happy face if the statement is correct and a sad Pagpapaunlad face if the statement is wrong. Do this on a whole sheet of pad paper. ____________1. Its capital city is Manila while its most populous city is Quezon City; both are part of Metro Manila. To the north of the Philippines across the Luzon Strait lies Taiwan; Vietnam sits west across the South China Sea; southwest is the island of Borneo across the Sulu Sea, and to the south the Celebes Sea separates it from other islands of Indonesia; while to the east it is bounded by the Philippine Sea and the island-nation of Palau. Its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire and close to the equator makes the Philippines prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also endows it with abundant natural resources and some of the world's greatest biodiversity. At approximately 300,000 square kilometers (115,831 sq mi), the Philippines is the 64th-largest country in the world. The Philippines has a tropical maritime climate that is usually hot and humid. There are three seasons: tag-init or tag-araw, the hot dry season or summer from March to May; tag-ulan, the rainy season from June to November; and tag-lamig, the cool dry season from December to February. Descriptive type of research was used in the study. Findings revealed that coffee shop businesses in Batangas City are operating in more then 3 years. With regards to personnel requirements, coffee shop managers prefer college or associate graduate with ages ranging from 21-23 years of age. Both male and female applicants are acceptable as long as they pass the process. Lack of skilled man is not a problem because they undergo training before they are allowed to be on the operation. Late arrivals of guests with respect to the reservation and those who do not showed up are not considered because managers are focusing more on those guests that are present. Employees encountered inadequate payroll problem followed by duplication of duties during the operation.
