Bunr Department of Geology Arizona State University Tempe, Arizona 85281 Abstract The crystallization sequence and metasomatic alteration of spodumene (LiAlSizOe), montebrasite(LiAIPO4(OH,F)), and lithiophilite (Li(Mn,Fe)PO+)are describedfor nine zoned lithium pegmatitesin the White Picacho district, Arizona. The observedcrystalliza- tion trends suggesta progressiveincrease in the activities of lithium species(spodumene follows microcline as the principal alkali aluminosilicate), as well as an increase in the activities of the acidic volatiles phosphorus and fluorine (montebrasite succeedsspodu- mene as the stableprimary lithium phase).Much of the lithiophilite occurs with columbite, apatite, beryl, zircon, and tourmaline in cleavelanditecomplexes that formed in part at the expenseof quartz-spodumenepegmatite. Fracture-controlledpseudomorphic alteration of the primary lithium minerals is widespread and apparently is the result of subsolidus reactionswith residualpegmatitic fluids. Spodumenehas been replacedby eucryptite, albite, and micas. Alteration products of montebrasite include low-fluorine secondary montebrasite,crandallite (tentative), hydroxylapatite, muscovite, brazilianite, augelite (tentative),scorzalite, kulanite, wyllieite, and carbonate-apatite.Secondary phases identi- fied in altered lithiophilite include hureaulite, triploidite, eosphorite, -

Tin, Tungsten, and Tantalum Deposits of South Dakota
TIN, TUNGSTEN, AND TANTALUM DEPOSITS OF SOUTH DAKOTA. By FRANK L. HESS. INTRODUCTION. Many articles have been written 011 the tin deposits of the Black Hills, and an excellent paper by J. D. Irving a on the tungsten deposits at Lead was published in 1901. Nothing is known to have been pub lished on the tungsten deposits of the southern Black Hills, but several articles have been written on the deposits of tantalum. Nearly all the papers on these different deposits, however, are a num ber of years old, and later developments have given several of the deposits an aspect somewhat different from their appearance at the time they were described. It therefore seems well to give a brief account of observations made by the writer during a short reconnais sance trip in September, 1908, together with such reviews of the his tory and the literature of the region as may seem advisable. All the known deposits of tin, tungsten, and tantalum in South Dakota occur in the Black Hills, in Lawrence and Pennington coun ties, in the southwestern part of the State. Although designated as "hills," these elevations reach a height of 7,216 feet in Harney Peak, 500 feet above the highest of the Appalachians (Mount Mitchell, 6,711 feet) and almost a thousand feet above the highest of the White Mountains (Mount Washington, 6,279 feet). They are about 60 to 75 miles long by 50 miles wide, the longer axis lying nearly north and south. There is a considerable diversity of topography in the different parts of the area to be considered. -

ABSTRACT The "alto" Boqueirlo is a tl,pical zoned pegmatite of the heterogeneoustype, which carries some unusual minerals besides those of the normal ber1,1-tantaliteassemblage. Among them are minor arnounts of uraninitc, altered in part to uranophane and other secondary compoundsl native bismuth. Lithiophilite and manl' secondary phosphates appear as usual in the general inner portion of the pegmatite near the cluartz core. Among these phosphates appear a pink variscite (carrying minor ber)'jlium); metastrengite as sometimes showy blue coatings of minute crystals; huriaulite and minor tavorite as coat- ings on fractures of lithiophilitel stewartite, massive or in rare crystals; mitridatite (a hydrous calcium iron phosphate), in deep red blades, or very fine grained massesyerlowish to greenish in color. A new mineral, chavesite is described. rt is a hydrous calcium man- ganese phosphate, occurring as thin platy crystals coating lithiophilite, and associated rvithhur6auliteandtavorite. The Occurrence of Li-Fe-Mn Phosphate Minerals in Granitic Pegmatites of Namibia

Namibia, 7 (1991) 21-35 The occurrence of Li-Fe-Mn phosphate minerals in granitic pegmatites of Namibia Paul Keller Institut für Mineralogie und Kristallchemie der Universität, Pfaffenwaldring 55, D- W7000 Stuttgart 80, Germany This is the first comprehensive account of Li-Fe-Mn phosphates (triphylite-lithiophilite and the topotactic alteration products ferrisick- lerite-sicklerite and heterosite-purpurite) from 46 granitic pegmatites of the Damara Sequence (Namibia). The Li-Fe-Mn phosphates display a wide range of Fe/(Fe+Mn) ratios. Preliminary ratios 0.125 ≤ Fe/(Fe+Mn) ≤ 0.845 have been determined by wet chemical and microprobe analyses. Relationships appear to be developed between the Fe/(Fe+Mn) ratios and the observed economic minerals, e.g. beryl, Ta-Nb oxides, petalite, and gem tourmaline. There is evidence for regional distribution patterns of Fe/(Fe+Mn) ratios regarding 8 portions and swarms of 4 pegmatite belts. There is fairly good accordance between the degree of fractionation, and differentiation, and the Fe/(Fe+Mn) ratio (hypothesis of Ginsburg) for a great number of pegmatites, although conspicuous deviations from that hypothesis were also noted. From the occurrence of arborescent Li-Fe-Mn phosphates, seen in 22 pegmatites, important arguments could be found for both the mode of the pegmatite evolution and for their economic mineralisation. Recent field observations prove that thermal under- cooling is predominantly responsible for the arborescent shape of Li-Fe-Mn phosphates in most of the Damaran pegmatites.
