The eye-opening essays and lectures by Dr Peter Weber about the Romanian painter and Holocaust survivor Arnold Daghani’s time in England provided a genesis for this thesis. Had it not for him, I would not have thought about putting Murdoch’s thinking in the context of Cen- tral European refugee literature and culture during and after the Second World War. This thesis owes much to the 2017 Holocaust Conference in Szeged (19 October) and the 2019 International Holocaust Conference in Halle (14-16 November). There are two people, whose friendship gave me immeasurable strength to carry on my ac- ademic life, and whose wisdom will always stay with me. Beside having given immeasurable encouragement for our conference in Szeged, Dr Sándor Besenyi was my spiritual mentor in my academic and personal life, a great father and grandfather and a highly prominent intellec- tual. While I had been making research about Murdoch for the National Students’ Competition in 2012, I came across Miklós Vető’s study on Simone Weil, in which he expressed his gratitude first and foremost to his supervisor Iris Murdoch. I would not have dreamed about stumbling upon him one day, which many happened years later on the corridors of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Szeged. This accidental happening was followed by a great number of email exchanges, personal meetings in Budapest, his “re-discovery” by the Iris Murdoch society as the last student of Murdoch, him being invited as a keynote speaker to the centenary conference at Oxford, and him asking me to make a collection of and write an introduction to Murdoch’s letters to him, published in 2018 in the Iris Murdoch Review. Both of them passed away last year, yet their memories will be here with me. Finally, I would like to thank my mum, my partner, and my friends for their immense emo- tional support at times when I lost track, and at times when we had great joys. In this work, I will explain how the issues of trauma, memory, displacement and power in Murdoch’s fiction were informed by her intellec- tual encounters with three German-speaking exiled authors, Elias Canetti, Franz Baermann Steiner and H.G. Adler. Concentrating on five novels from Murdoch’s early period, Under the Net (1954), The Flight from the Enchanter (1956), A Severed Head (1961), The Italian Girl (1964), The Nice and the Good (1968), I will explore how the post-war trauma and the questions of displacement, power and making sense of the past had become central to her. What makes these works curious to discuss is that, in them, she sets up the diagnosis of post-war societies, which are suffering between two totalitarian powers, where exile is a symbol of the modern state of being that is characterized by rootlessness and alienation. Considering the theoretical aspects where the memories of the war, the trauma of the Holocaust and the problem of exile are represented by her refugee characters, many of whom were inspired by Canetti, Steiner and Adler, I will explain how the sense of rootlessness and identity search depicted in these novels can be compared with the theories and the lived experiences of the three authors discussed. Iris Murdoch was one of the most prolific and significant English writers and philosophers in the 20th century. She was born in Dublin in 1919 of Anglo-Irish parents. From 1932 to 1938, she was a boarding student at Badminton School in Bristol. From 1938 to 1942, she studied philosophy at Somerville College, Oxford. During the war she went to work as an Assistant Principal at HM Treasury, and then worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (U.N.R.R.A.) in the refugee camps in the refugee camps in Brussels and Inns- bruck between 1945 and 1946. From 1947 to 1948, she had a postgraduate studentship in phi- losophy at Newnham College, Cambridge. In 1948, she returned to Oxford, where she became a fellow of St Anne’s College. She lived with her husband, the professor and literary critic John Bayley, from 1956 until her death in 1999. From her debut with Under the Net, Iris Murdoch was regarded as one of the most remark- able post-war women writers starting their careers in the mid-twentieth century, now called 6 intermodernism, whose vivid description of sexuality and morals has influenced such novelists of the later generation as Margaret Drabble, A.S. Byatt, Alan Hollinghurst, or Sarah Waters. In her career as a novelist, spanning for more than four decades, she wrote 26 twenty-six novels, a short story (Something Special, 1957), six plays, two volumes of poetry, and four books on philosophy, including two Platonic dialogues. Her novels enjoyed a wide readership and were hailed by her contemporaries, winning several literary awards, among the Booker Prize for The Sea, the Sea (1978), the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for The Black Prince (1973) and the Whitbread Prize for The Sacred and Profane Love Machine (1974). Murdoch’s fiction is filled with philosophical ideas on the nature of good and evil, love, suffering, the mysterious forces of the human psyche, and the various manifestations of power in human relationships.

    chapter 17 Czech Language and Literature Peter Zusi Recent years have seen a certain tendency to refer to Kafka as a ‘Czech’ author – a curious designation for a writer whose literary works, without exception, are composed in German. As the preceding chapter describes, Kafka indeed lived most of his life in a city where Czech language and society gradually came to predominate over the German-speaking minor- ity, and Kafka – a native German-speaker – adapted deftly to this changing social landscape. Referring to Kafka as Czech, however, is inaccurate, explicable perhaps only as an attempt to counterbalance a contrasting simplification of his complicated biography: the marked tendency within Kafka scholarship to investigate his work exclusively in the context of German, Austrian or Prague-German literary history. The Czech socio-cultural impulses that surrounded Kafka in his native Prague have primarily figured in Kafka scholarship through sociological sketches portraying ethnic animosity, lack of communication and, at times, open violence between the two largest lin- guistic communities in the city. These historical realities have given rise to the persistent image of a ‘dividing wall’ between the Czech- and German- speaking inhabitants of Prague, with the two populations reading different newspapers, attending separate cultural institutions and congregating in segregated social venues. This image of mutual indifference or antagonism has often made the question of Kafka’s relation to Czech language and cul- ture appear peripheral. Yet confronting the perplexing blend of proximity and distance, famil- iarity and resentment which characterized inter-linguistic and inter- cultural contact in Kafka’s Prague is a necessary challenge.

Cohen, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities The modernist breakthroughs in Viennese intellectual and artistic life around 1900 have attracted great interest over many decades. The remarkable concentration of innovative figures, the originality and significance of their work, the important personal connections among of them, and the apparent cultural fertility of the Viennese environment in that era have captured the attention of scholars and the educated public alike. Carl Schorske's masterful Fin-de-siecle Vienna, now some thirty-six years old, has introduced many readers to the intellectual and cultural world of Vienna and offered students a basic framework for understanding the foundations and patterns of some of the most important innovations. One must be careful, though, not to exaggerate the uniqueness of Vienna around 1900 or to see the city as the single most important cradle of twentieth-century modernism. We recognize that intellectuals and artists in Paris, Berlin, New York, Munich, Budapest, and other major European and North American cities were also breaking away from the nineteenth-century liberal rational synthesis in ways that had wide impact, engaging in their own secessions from established modes of thought and expression with the particular fields or disciplines involved and the exact timing of the revolts dependent on local circumstances. It is good to remember that for Schorske and others who have investigated particular cities in this or other eras of radical breakdown, examining intellectuals and artists in a single urban community has been a means to understand better the parallels and connections between activities in the various disciplines or genres and to identify the conditions, motivations, and impulses that were common to the 2 innovators in various fields.

Wanneer ik de afgelopen jaren vertelde waar ik mee bezig was, vroeg menigeen verbaasd en nieuwsgierig hoe ik tot dit onderwerp gekomen was. Anderen meenden dat er inmiddels wel genoeg over het lot van de joden was geschreven. Nu krijgt elke contemporain historicus te maken met uitgesproken meningen en opvattingen van tijdgenoten. Maar het lijkt me duidelijk dat het onderwerp van dit boek uitzonderlijke reacties teweegbrengt. Wat Bram de Swaan in 1965 opmerkte over de respons op Pressers Ondergang, geldt kennelijk nog steeds en ook voor mijn boek: de mensen zitten er erg mee. Dit verklaart misschien dat mij behalve naar mijn motivatie verder nauwelijks iets werd gevraagd. Mijn belangstelling voor de nasleep van de jodenvervolging dateert uit mijn studietijd.     INTRODUCTION Drawn from life: Mary Douglas’s personal method Richard Fardon Mary Douglas (1921–2007) was the most widely read British anthropolo- gist of the second half of the twentieth century. Her writings continue to inspire researchers in numerous fields in the twenty-first century.1 This vol- ume of papers, first published over a period of almost fifty years, provides insights into the wellsprings of her style of thought and manner of writing. More popular counterparts to many of Douglas’s academic works – either the first formulation of an argument, or its more general statement – were often published around the same time as a specialist version. These first thoughts and popular re-imaginings are particularly revealing of the close relation between Douglas’s intellectual and personal concerns, a convergence that became more overt in her late career, when Mary Douglas occasionally wrote autobiographi- cally, explaining her ideas in relation to her upbringing, her family, and her experiences as both a committed Roman Catholic and a social anthropologist in the academy. The four social types of her theoretical writings – hierarchy, competition, the enclaved sect, and individuals in isolation – extend to remote times and distant places, prototypes that literally were close to home for her. This ability to expand and contract a restricted range of formal images allowed Mary Douglas to enter new fields of study with startling rapidity, to link unlikely domains of thought (through analogy, most frequently with religion), and to accommodate the most diverse examples in comparative frameworks. It was the way, to put it baldly, she made things fall into place.
