22 | www.seniorscenemag.com | October 2020 Greetings, Some of the most memorable events of my life have occurred this past month, including surgery to replace my left knee. While knee replacements are becoming more common, having it done when both knees require the same surgery presents multiple recovery issues. Just glad I do not have three knees. I thank all who have helped us set new records for the car raffle. Recent events have renewed my faith in the ability of the government and private sector to recognize needs and respond positively to them. We did receive a PPP loan, as well as a check from Brevard County as part of the CARES act, and at this writing have a strong possibility of funding from a private foundation. Add to all this the exceptionally strong response to our second raffle mailing, and I am again reminded of the generosity of people who want to help others. The car raffle response has been both local and national. In all of my fund raising, I do not remember such strong support from donors around the country. Part of this is because we have established a large number of donors from past raffles, but I also believe that there has been an increase in support of causes that help the elderly. As president and founder of Helping Seniors, I thank our board, staff, and all who have helped us strengthen our financial position, which enables us to continue our work of informing, educating, and connecting seniors to needed resources. September was a good month for us. We continue to open new doors that equip us to assist those in need. One door we still need to open is affordable housing, for this is one of the main challenges we face as a nonprofit and advocate for the elderly. Thank you for your tremendous support and stay well.

October 2020 | Senior Scene® Magazine | 35 SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Social Media Holds Hidden Dangers

ven before the lockdowns brought on by the coronavirus, too many seniors felt isolated. Now it's even worse for many of us with the lack of face-to- faceE interactions ... and we've turned to social media for connections to others. There, on Facebook and Twitter, in chat rooms and email lists, we've found friends to talk to and pass the hours of this lockdown. We feel happy to have these people at the other end of the keyboard. It's good for us. Or maybe not. The big problem with social media is that we really don't know who is on the other end. The new friend who seems so interested in us might actually be a scammer, just waiting for the right moment to spring the trap and ask for money. How can you refuse, you'll wonder, if someone you've come to know so well asks for help? Or maybe we've shared too much information, such as our location or our real name. Or how about the new friend who sends funny cartoons, one of which might contain a virus that leaves our computer open to hackers? Add in an election year, and it's all too easy to talk online with people who supposedly share our views. Quite commonly they ask for money or contact info. Some things to think about: If you really want to connect with others on social media, create a fake name for it. Learn how to block people and don't add just anybody to your network or list. Don't give out your real name or location, no matter how friendly other people seem. Focus on an area of social media with a narrow, safe focus such as pets, cooking or gardening. Better yet, call up a few people you already know and ask if they'd like to meet for online games, such as chess, or just chatting. They might feel just as isolated as you do and welcome your overture. (C) 2020 KING FEATURES SYNDICATE, INC.

PHOTO ID REQUIRED AFTER LOCKOUT cont'd from pg 16 In the event you get locked out, Facebook has an automated process that will generate special recovery codes that only your pre-existing trusted contacts can access, so you’ll need to follow the recovery instructions very carefully: https://bit.ly/2CLIDQS Additional Security Step A very important security step that can reduce the chances that your account is ever taken over by a thief is to activate ‘two-factor authentication’, which is in the same ‘Security and Login’ menu. This will register your phone number with Facebook as the rightful owner of the account and send a code to that number whenever you log into your account from a device or location that Facebook doesn’t recognize. Once activated, this would mean that a thief would not only have to steal your username and password, they would also have to get their hands on your phone while trying to log in. Researchers then used that information to determine participants’ nutrient levels. During the follow-period, which lasted about six years, more than 3,600 people died. When the researchers first started examining the data, it looked as though dietary supplements were associated with a lower risk of early death. But after they adjusted for factors like education, socioeconomic status and demographics, it became apparent that mostly higher-income, better-educated people – who are more likely to be in good health to begin with – were taking supplements. After that adjustment, the connection between supplements and longevity disappeared. The researchers found that getting enough vitamin A, vitamin K, magnesium, zinc and copper were all associated with a lower risk of dying early – but only when those nutrients came from food. In fact, some supplements even appeared to come with health risks. People who took high doses of calcium via supplement has a 53% higher risk of dying from cancer than people who were not taking supplements. But excess calcium from food was not associated with a similar uptick in mortality risk, which suggests that the body may not be able to clear excess supplemental calcium as well as it can natural calcium. The connection between excess calcium and cancer still isn’t totally clear and will require more researth. People who took vitamin D supplements but were not deficient in vitamin D also had a higher risk of dying during the study, but the supplements did not seem to boost death risk for those who were lacking in vitamin D. WHEN IS PROBATE THE BETTER WAY TO SETTLE AN ESTATE? continued from pg 13 Representative (executor) must file an inventory of the assets the Personal Representative must explain the reason why to with the court and mail a copy to the beneficiaries within 60 the court. This keeps the process going. Since the probate days of appointment. If an estate is not closed in one year, court automatically enforces these requirements, no action is generally required by a beneficiary. If something is wrong in probate, all a beneficiary has to do is file an objection with the court. But with a trust, if something is wrong or nothing is happening, the beneficiary will have to initiate a seperate legal action. The services of an attorney would be needed to file the law suit which and could be expensive. Why probate may be helpful from the administrator’s perspective: The trustee is a fiduciary with the highest duty under the law to the beneficiaries and is liable for damages caused by a failure to meet his/her responsibilities. This liability can extend for years after distribution. To limit liablity, the trustee will want to obtain approvals of a final accounting and proposed distribution. If a beneficiary refuses to cooperate, it will delay the closing of the estate and distribution to other beneficiaries. The trustee can send a notice to beneficiaries that if they wish to object they must file a lawsuit within six months. In contrast, closure is simple and direct with probate. Beneficiaries are given 30 days to object to the Petition for Discharge and proposed distribution. If no objections are filed, the court enters an Order of Discharge releasing the Personal Representative from further liability.
