And It was first established and opened in March 30, 1971 by three partners who met while they were students at the University of San Francisco. English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegl, and writer Gordon Bowker. The three were inspired to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment by coffee roasting entrepreneur Alfred Peet after he taught them his style of roasting beans. Originally the company was to be called Pequod but was rejected by some of the co- founders. The business was instead named after the chief mate on the Pequod, Starbuck. Before, the enterprise was a single store in 2000 Western Avenue Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market, Washington 1971–1976. From just a narrow storefront, it offered some of the world’s finest fresh-roasted whole bean coffees. This cafe was later moved to 1912 Pike Place Market; never to be relocated again. During this time, the company only sold roasted whole coffee beans and did not yet brew coffee to sell.The only brewed coffee served in the store were free samples. During their first year of operation, they purchased green coffee beans from Peet's, then began buying directly from growers. Moby Dick inspired the name after a whaling ship , evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders. In 1981, Howard Schultz (Starbucks chairman, president and chief executive officer) had first walked into a Starbucks store. -

MATERIAL OBJECTS AND EVERYDAY NATIONALISM IN DESIGN: THE ELECTRIC TURKISH COFFEE MAKER, ITS DESIGN AND CONSUMPTION HARUN KAYGAN A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2012 The University of Brighton Abstract This thesis provides an account of material objects which are related to the nation in their design and consumption. Addressing a major gap both in design literature and in theories of everyday nationalism, the study focuses on the processes of design and consumption in which material objects are nationalised, rather than on objects as representative of nations. For this purpose, a material-semiotic theoretical framework is developed, contributing to current debates on the use of STS-based approaches in design research. Accordingly, design and consumption are viewed as two sociotechnical settings where a variety of actors—engineers, designers, users, other objects as well as nations—are brought together. In application of this framework, design and consumption of a nationally charged kitchen appliance, the electric Turkish coffee maker, was investigated for the ways in which Turkish nation is evoked in discourse and practice by the actors involved. To this end, interviews were conducted with the managers, designers and engineers involved in the development of electric Turkish coffee makers. Together with the documents collected, the data is used to piece together the processes of product development and design. These were complemented and contrasted with interviews, focus groups and participant observation sessions, organised with users of the product. The analysis shows that electric Turkish coffee makers are conceived as a national project, which translates Turkish coffee to national tradition, and global commercial success via its mechanisation to national responsibility and pride. -

ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE FOR THE CONSUMPTION OF TOBACCO AND COFFEE IN OTTOMAN ARABIA by Aimee C. Bouzigard May 2010 Under the Direction of BenJamin A. Saidel, PhD Chair: Linda D. Wolfe, PhD MaJor Department: Anthropology This thesis is to examine the nature of the archaeological evidence for coffee and tobacco consumption in Arabia during the Ottoman period (sixteenth through the early twentieth centuries). The data used in this study are culled from survey proJects carried out in Saudi Arabia during the Comprehensive Survey Program (1976 – 1981). I have refined the dates of the tobacco pipes (chibouks), which will allow for a finer grain chronology for the spread of coffee and tobacco based on the material culture. Additionally, pottery parallels used in conJunction with the tobacco pipe material will aid in refining the chronology for Ottoman-period sites in northern Arabia. A large portion of this proJect also involves an evaluation of the methodological issues facing researchers who are attempting to study Ottoman-period components in the Middle East, as revealed in the gross survey reports from Saudi Arabia. A final facet of this proJect is to draw a link between the artifacts associated with coffee and tobacco consumption, and the types of sites where they are found. By distinguishing the site types associated with coffee and tobacco through the analysis of archaeological finds, we can access a clearer picture of the distribution of those artifacts in Arabia that are associated with coffee drinking and tobacco smoking in order to tell where and whom was engaging in these activities.
