The Electric Turkish Coffee Maker, Its Design and Consumption MATERIAL OBJECTS AND EVERYDAY NATIONALISM IN DESIGN: THE ELECTRIC TURKISH COFFEE MAKER, ITS DESIGN AND CONSUMPTION HARUN KAYGAN A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Brighton for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2012 The University of Brighton Abstract This thesis provides an account of material objects which are related to the nation in their design and consumption. Addressing a major gap both in design literature and in theories of everyday nationalism, the study focuses on the processes of design and consumption in which material objects are nationalised, rather than on objects as representative of nations. For this purpose, a material-semiotic theoretical framework is developed, contributing to current debates on the use of STS-based approaches in design research. Accordingly, design and consumption are viewed as two sociotechnical settings where a variety of actors—engineers, designers, users, other objects as well as nations—are brought together. In application of this framework, design and consumption of a nationally charged kitchen appliance, the electric Turkish coffee maker, was investigated for the ways in which Turkish nation is evoked in discourse and practice by the actors involved. To this end, interviews were conducted with the managers, designers and engineers involved in the development of electric Turkish coffee makers. Together with the documents collected, the data is used to piece together the processes of product development and design. These were complemented and contrasted with interviews, focus groups and participant observation sessions, organised with users of the product. The analysis shows that electric Turkish coffee makers are conceived as a national project, which translates Turkish coffee to national tradition, and global commercial success via its mechanisation to national responsibility and pride. Accordingly, design practice attempts to produce and maintain the products as objectifications of national cultural authenticity. In the analysed consumption setting, however, users appropriate the products not as authentic replacements of, but as convenient supplements to the ‘authentic’, which they instead utilise to improve sociability. The study suggests and illustrates that a comprehensive understanding of everyday nationalism in particular, and politics in general, requires taking seriously the material agency of objects— conceptualised as symbolic and material assemblages with politically substantial meanings and affordances. Because of this close relation between the two concepts; translation studies have recently put emphasis on the study of translation and culture. The aim of this study is to descriptively analyse translation of material culture elements in Buket Uzuner’s novel Uzun Beyaz Bulut-Gelibolu translated into English as The Long White Cloud-Gallipoli by Pelin Thornhill Arıner within the framework of domestication and foreignization strategies. The study focuses on determining how translation procedures by Peter Newmark that are used in translation of cultural elements affect the governing translation strategy, namely domestication and foreignization in translation of the selected novel.The procedures are divided into two strategies as domesticating and foreignizing strategies. Naturalization, Cultural equivalent, Functional Equivalent, Descriptive Equivalent, Synonymy, Modulation, Translation Label, Compensation, Componential Analysis, Reduction and Expansion and Paraphrase are analysed under domestication strategy while Literal Translation, Transference, Through Translation and Paraphrase, Notes, Additions are analysed under foreignization strategy. A już kilka dni później siedziałem w samolocie i leciałem nad Rumunią, Bułgarią i Morzem Czarnym w stronę Stambułu. Tak, całkiem przez przypadek, zaczęła się moja najdłuższa zawodowa i prywatna przygoda. Kayseri okazało się leżeć w Turcji, u stop wulkanu Erciyes, na którego zboczach już tydzień później uczyłem się jeździć na nartach.

    Introduction The general experiences of Australian prisoners of war in World War I have been neglected in both official and general war histories and accounts of the Anzac tradition. Even more neglected however are the experiences of Australian soldiers captured in theatres of war throughout the Ottoman Empire, including those captured at Gallipoli. Most examples of prisoner of war (POW) writing have concentrated on World War II POWs and the Japanese experience in particular.1 In the Australian War Memorial’s (AWM) collection dealing with Australian war captivity, for example, almost two thirds are concerned with World War II prisoners of the Japanese. Only ‘a tiny one percent’ is devoted to prisoners of the Turks.2 In the event that prisoners of war in Turkey are acknowledged, few sources are consulted. Selected memoirs and autobiographies are used uncritically without corroboration of other historical sources, particularly Turkish sources, to produce an overall picture of unrelieved brutality. It has been suggested that this historical neglect of prisoners of war can be explained by their representations of military failure, creating a sense of national shame. The research develops a model of relationship satisfaction positioned within the conceptual framework of Wackman, Salmon & Salmon (1986/87). This conceptual framework has been extended with additional variables to account for the complexities of the agency-client relationship in the Turkish advertising industry today. A survey of Turkey’s largest advertisers was conducted, using the face-to-face interview method. Factor analysis and regression analysis (of factor-scores) were then used to test the proposed framework. All of the dimensions of the model were found to significantly influence the advertiser’s satisfaction with the agency. The results suggest that advertisers principally value the agency’s creativity and the relationship with the agency. Compatibility, agency’s cost-consciousness, service breadth, leadership capability, and perceived contribution to advertiser’s sales, market share, and brand targets were also found to be important for satisfaction. Other significant predictors are people- related attributes, strategic input, trust, cooperativeness, and prestige and full-service capability. The empirical findings are consistent with the theory and confirm the importance of relationship attributes in advertiser’s satisfaction.

ISMAIL (Received at 2/5/2011) إطالة فترة الصﻻحية للكفتة المبردة باستخدام مستخلص أوراق الشاي اﻷخضر تقوي حسين إسماعيل تم دراسة تأثٌر إضافة تركٌزات مختلقة من مستخلص الشاي اﻷخضر إلً اللحم البقري الطازج المفروم والمجهز لعمل المنتج المصري المعرف بأسم الكفتة وذلك علً الجودة الحسٌة والبكترٌولوجٌة والكٌمٌائٌة. وتم تقسٌم العٌنات إلً خمس مجموعات وخلط كل مجموعة بمستخلص الشاي اﻷخضر بتركٌز صفر% )المجموعة الضابطة( %0.5 ,%1, %1.5, 2% علً التوالً ثم حفظها عند درجة حرارة 4 درجة مئوٌة حٌث تم الفحص خﻻل فترات من 0 , 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 ٌوما ًا. وأظهرت النتائج أن معالجة العٌنات بتركٌز %1 , %1.5 , 2% من مستخلص الشاي اﻷخضر أعطً نتٌجة اٌجابٌة وتحسين المظهر العام والرائحة ولون المنتج لمدة تصل إلً 8 أٌام من التخزٌن. وكان العدد الكلً للبكترٌا المحبة للبرودة فً العٌنات المعالجة حتى الٌوم الثامن من التخزٌن أقل من 610 خلٌة لكل جرام بٌنما فسدت عٌنات المجموعة الضابطة بعد 6 أٌام تخزٌن. كما أظهرت الدراسة أن مستخلص الشاي اﻷخضر له تأثٌر خافض بشكل عام علً اﻷحمال البكتٌرٌة لكل من العدد الكلً لمٌكروب كلوستردٌم برفرنجٌز والعدد الكلً لبكترٌا اﻷمعائٌة والعدد الكلً للمكورات العنقودٌة الذهبٌة. وأظهرت النتائج انخفاضا فً قٌمة الرقم الهٌدروجٌنً وقٌم حامض الثاٌوبارب تًورك فً كل العٌنات المعالجة مقارنة بالمجموعة الضابطة. هذا وقد أوصت الدراسة بإمكانٌة استخدام الشاي اﻷخضر فً حفظ منتج الكفتة المصرٌة حتى 8 أٌام كبدٌل طبٌعً للمواد الحافظة الكٌمٌائٌة ولتحسٌن الجودة وإطالة فترة التخزٌن عند حفظها عند درجة حرارة أربعة درجات مئوٌة.

    CULINAIR OVER DE GRENZEN Het begon met een redelijk vaag Instagram berichtje of Edwin wilde komen koken in de MET CHEF-KOK Armeense hoofdstad Yerevan tijdens het foodfestival. Op dagelijkse basis komen er bij sterrenstaurant ONE in Roermond relatief veel van dit soort berichten binnen van over de hele wereld. Meestal staan die in het teken van sollicitaties van jonge en ambitieuze chefs of van bedrijven die hun product willen slijten aan eigenaar en chef-kok Edwin Soumang. Hij probeert deze berichten zo vaak mogelijk te beantwoorden, zo ook het bericht uit Armenië. Na een beetje over en weer te hebben gestuurd, bleek dat de wens om Edwin als gastchef uit te nodigen authentiek was en dat kosten nog moeite gespaard zouden worden om zijn komst naar Armenië te realiseren. Voor de chefs daar natuurlijk een erg spannend moment, want Edwin was de eerste Michelinchef ooit die kwam koken in hun restaurant.
