Distant Music An autoethnographic study of global songwriting in the digital age. SHEILA SIMMENES SUPERVISOR Michael Rauhut University of Agder, 2020 Faculty of Fine Arts Department of Popular music 2 Abstract This thesis aims to explore the path to music creation and shed a light on how we may maneuver songwriting and music production in the digital age. As a songwriter in 2020, my work varies from being in the same physical room using digital communication with collaborators from different cultures and sometimes even without ever meeting face to face with the person I'm making music with. In this thesis I explore some of the opportunities and challenges of this process and shine a light on tendencies and trends in the field. As an autoethnographic research project, this thesis offers an insight into the songwriting process and continuous development of techniques by myself as a songwriter in the digital age, working both commercially and artistically with international partners across the world. The thesis will aim to supplement knowledge on current working methods in songwriting and will hopefully shine a light on how one may improve as a songwriter and topliner in the international market. The KNIGHT REVISION of HORNBOSTEL-SACHS: a new look at musical instrument classification by Roderic C. Knight, Professor of Ethnomusicology Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, © 2015, Rev. 2017 Introduction The year 2015 marks the beginning of the second century for Hornbostel-Sachs, the venerable classification system for musical instruments, created by Erich M. von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs as Systematik der Musikinstrumente in 1914. In addition to pursuing their own interest in the subject, the authors were answering a need for museum scientists and musicologists to accurately identify musical instruments that were being brought to museums from around the globe. As a guiding principle for their classification, they focused on the mechanism by which an instrument sets the air in motion. The idea was not new. The Indian sage Bharata, working nearly 2000 years earlier, in compiling the knowledge of his era on dance, drama and music in the treatise Natyashastra, (ca. 200 C.E.) grouped musical instruments into four great classes, or vadya, based on this very idea: sushira, instruments you blow into; tata, instruments with strings to set the air in motion; avanaddha, instruments with membranes (i.e. drums), and ghana, instruments, usually of metal, that you strike. (This itemization and Bharata’s further discussion of the instruments is in Chapter 28 of the Natyashastra, first translated into English in 1961 by Manomohan Ghosh (Calcutta: The Asiatic Society, v.2). The immediate predecessor of the Systematik was a catalog for a newly-acquired collection at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels. The collection included a large number of instruments from India, and the curator, Victor-Charles Mahillon, familiar with the Indian four-part system, decided to apply it in preparing his catalog, published in 1880 (this is best documented by Nazir Jairazbhoy in Selected Reports in Ethnomusicology – see 1990 in the timeline below). -

NAHMA Educational Foundation Awwards 67 Scholarships to Exceptional Students July 25, 2014, Alexandria, VA -- After receiving a record number of scholarship applications during the submission period earlier this year, the NAHMA Educational Foundation recently announced the names of its 2014 scholarship recipientss. Sixty-seven highly successful student residents were seelected from a rigorous field of worthy applicants. This is the largest number of scholarship recipients ever selected in a single year. Each of the 67 scholars will receive a $2,500 award for a total of $167,500 to be awarded for the upcoming school year. The monetary total is also a single-year record for the NAHMA Educational Foundation. In the program’s eight-year history, the foundation has now awarded 338 scholarships worth more than $519,000. "The foundation is extremely proud to be able to offer this much assistance to so many outstanding students living in AHMA member apartment communities across the country,” said NAHMA Foundation Chairperson Wayne Fox at the meeting. “We set records this year with the number of scholarships granted and the total amount of money to be disbursed. We were also able to pass the half-million-dollar milestone for money awarded over the history of the program. The foundation is sincerely appreciative of all the donors who continue to support this wonderful program." The project title itself is more than letters and numbers. The meaning is as equally important as each song. The (JAK2) V617F is a chromosome mutation causing several types of myeloprolifirative leukemias, including Lieberman’s disease (post Polycythemia Vera Myelofibrosis). After battling leukemia for six years, Lieberman’s newly released "Terminator V617F" was produced and completed just two months after receiving news that the cancer has become terminal. With a third round of unsuccessful chemotherapy in progress, The Gangsta Rabbi would once again tread against the grain, doing things his way. The Brooklyn-born musician has built a successful career off his unorthodoxed approach. Lieberman became a legendary staple within the industrial rock genre largely due to his signature use of distorted bass, guitars and other instruments. -

In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. Director’s Note This show was neither for me, nor about me. It was for the kids. It was for every theatre person who has been denied putting on theatre for the last year. It was for artists, and technicians, and house managers, and designers, and everyone across the country who lost their jobs in the performing arts and have no idea when or if they will be able to return. This show was to let people know that theatre will go on, theatre is important, and whether you realize it or not, theatre is needed. This was a show that I thought we might never be able to pull off, but just to prove that people are capable of so much more than we give ourselves credit for - I decided to do it for these kids.
