“Decorazioni barocche in San Silvestro in Capite a Roma,” Bollettino d’arte, XLII, 1957, 44-9 Original English version “The Baroque Decorations in San Silvestro in Capite, Rome,” 1955 (click here for first page) The Baroque Decorations in San Silvestro in Capite, Rome Irving Lavin Harvard University February, 1955 The Baroque Decorations in San Silvestro in Capite, Rome In the last quarter of the seventeenth century the Franciscan sisters of the order of Santa Clara began a thorough renovation of the church of which they had been proprietors since the thirteenth century, San Silvestro in Capite.1 The great wealth of the order made it possible to employ the ablest artists of the day, and by the time the task was completed in the early eighteenth century the church could boast of some of the major monuments of late Baroque art in Rome (Fig. 1). The great ceiling paintings of Giacinto Brandi and Ludovico Gimignani, the altarpieces of Giuseppe Chiari, the sculptures of Lorenzo Ottoni and Camillo Rusconi, and the facade by Domenico de′ Rossi, contribute to make the church’s decorations indispensable for an understanding of the stylistic development of the period. Knowledge of this contribution, however, has been severely limited by an almost exclusive dependence on the sparse notices given in early biographers and guide books, such as Pascoli and Titi. It is extremely fortunate therefore in that the archives of the convent which contain the documents relating to the decorations are still preserved in the Archivio di Stato of Rome. The most important of these documents are gathered together and transcribed in the Appendix to this notice.2 They permit a nearly complete reconstruction of the history of the decorations (Fig. -

(011/33) San Lorenzo in Damaso San Lorenzo in Damaso is a church dedicated to the deacon and martyr St Lawrence. It was one of the first parish churches in Rome, known as the Titulus Damasi. It has the dignity of a minor basilica. Located a few steps from Campo de 'Fiori, in the current Piazza della Cancelleria. History The church is believed to have been founded in the home of the Pope St Damasus (366-383), by the Pope himself near the Theater of Pompey. There is a Latin couplet attributed to him which celebrates this: Haec Damasus tibi Christe Deus nova tecta dicavi; Laurenti saeptus martyris auxilio ("This new house I, Damasus, protected by the help of the martyr Lawrence, dedicate to you O Christ God"). The entry in the Liber Pontificalis recording the foundation names the church as Sancti Laurentii juxta Theatrum, which refers to the Theatre of Pompey immediately to the east. Its first documentary reference is in the acta of a synod held by Pope Symmachus in 399, when it was known as the Titulus Damasi. [1] [3] A restoration was undertaken by Pope Adrian I (772-95), and it was then that the relics of Pope St Damasus were brought here from his family tomb on the Via Ardeatina. They have been under the high altar ever since. [1] [3] This ancient basilica and palace were demolished in 1484 to make room for the new Palazzo della Cancelleria for Raffaele Cardinal Riario, nephew of Sixtus IV (1471-1484), and funded partially with money that Cardinal Riario had won gambling with Franceschetto Cibo. -

VALE* Resumo Apesar da notoriedade de um artista como Filippo della Valle (Florença, 1698 – Roma, 1768) no contexto do settecento romano e da sua evidente relação com Portugal e com encomendadores portugueses, a historiografia da arte nacional nunca se ocupou da sua figura nem atentou particularmente na sua obra relacionada com o nosso país. Nascido em Florença, é todavia em Roma que Filippo della Valle desenvolverá a sua actividade e angariará a mais notável clientela, movendo-se frequente- mente nos círculos da cúria pontifícia, contando-se, entre esta distinta clientela o rei de Portugal, D. João V. Assim, tanto na década de trinta como naquela de cinquenta, trabalha della Valle para o nosso país – esculpindo pelo menos duas estátuas para a basílica de Mafra (sendo que a de S. Jerónimo se encontra assinada pelo artista) – e também para um português em Roma – ao realizar o monumento fúnebre do último embaixador a que aludimos, Manuel Pereira Sampaio, erigido na igreja de Santo António dos Portugueses em Roma. Saint Peter’s Basilica Vatican City The Papal Basilica of Saint Peter (Latin: Basilica Sancti Petri), officially known in Italian as the Basilica Papale di San Pietro in Vaticano and commonly known as Saint Peter's Basilica, is located within the Vatican City. Saint Peter's Basilica has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world, holding 60,000 people. It is the symbolic "Mother church" of the Catholic Church and is regarded as one of the holiest Christian sites. It has been described as "holding a unique position in the Christian world" and as "the greatest of all churches of Christendom". In Catholic tradition, it is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and, according to tradition, first Bishop of Rome and therefore first in the line of the papal succession. Tradition and some historical evidence hold that Saint Peter's tomb is directly below the altar of the basilica. For this reason, many Popes have been interred at St Peter's since the Early Christian period. There has been a church on this site since the 4th century. Construction of the present basilica, over the old Constantinian basilica, began on April 18, 1506 and was completed on November 18, 1626. Saint Peter's is famous as a place of pilgrimage, for its liturgical functions and for its historical associations. It is associated with the papacy, with the Counter-reformation and with numerous artists, most significantly Michelangelo. As a work of architecture, it is regarded as the greatest building of its age. -
The Pantheon: from Antiquity to the Present
One Introduction Tod A. Marder and Mark Wilson Jones Astonishing for its scale and magnificence as for its preservation, rich in history and meanings, the Pantheon exerts a perpetual fascination. Written accounts, visual representations, and architectural progeny from late antiquity to our day combine to create a presence at once unique and universal in the Western architectural tradition. The Venerable Bede declared that whoever leaves Rome without seeing the Pantheon leaves Rome a fool, and this dictum seems no less valid for our time than when it was first uttered, according to legend, in the eighth century. Visitors may marvel at its unexpected majesty even as they experience a sense of déjà vu, having already encountered its resonant reflection in buildings from other epochs on different continents. Indeed, the Pantheon straddles the history of Western architecture like a colossus, its influence perhaps more pervasive than for any other single building in history (Fig. 1.1, Plate I).1 1.1. (Photo Roberto Lucignani) This influence has been generous and elastic, inspiring not only copies but creative reinterpretations like Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, St. Peter’s in Rome, the Capitol in Washington, and the Parliament of Bangladesh. No less diverse are the associations that such projects exploit, which can be sacred or secular, political or religious. Simultaneously a symbol of cultural stability or revolutionary change, the Pantheon is a remarkably vigorous and mutable icon.2 The fame of the Pantheon is of course bound up with its imagery, and its imagery with its structure. -
