CHAPTER SIX IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA (c.1491–1556)1 Ignatius of Loyola a theologian? On what grounds? The only book that he wrote entirely on his own was the Spiritual Exercises, hardly a work of “theology.” His correspondence, though the largest of any single person from the sixteenth century, presents problems with trying to discover in it a theology. The correspondence mainly consists of practical directives and suggestions to members of the newly founded Society of Jesus as to how they might deport themselves in the diverse and sometimes exotic situations in which they found themselves, whether in Paris, Vienna, Lisbon, Brazil, or India, whether as itinerant preachers to peasants in obscure hamlets or as founders of schools in large urban centers. Moreover, most of the extant correspondence of almost 7,000 letters dates after 1547, when Juan Alfonso de Polanco became Ignatius’s secre- tary.2 The collaboration between Ignatius and Polanco was so close that it is often difficult to know just what to attribute to Ignatius, what to Polanco. Almost the same can be said of the Jesuit Constitutions, which Ignatius agreed to draft when elected superior general of the Society a few months after its formal approval as a religious order by Pope Paul III in September 1540. Although the traditional interpretation that Ignatius himself was the principal inspiration behind the Constitutions still stands, much of the wording, arrangement, and many of the details must be attributed to Polanco. Everything was submitted to Ignatius for approval and revision, but, as in any case of such close collaboration, the problem of authorship cannot be solved by facilely assigning contents to Ignatius and form to Polanco. -

A pesar de ser un personaje relevante en su tiempo, no ha sido estudiado lo suficiente. En estas páginas se tratan de presentar los temas que se conocen más y, sobre todo, aquellos en los que habría que insistir, especialmente en tres puntos: en primer lugar, se analiza el diferente modo en que ha sido presentada la vida de Salmerón por parte de los historiadores jesuitas; en segundo lugar, se presentan las características que nos permiten afirmar que Salmerón fue el prototipo de jesuita de primera generación, haciendo hincapié en el desarraigo que tuvo respecto a su familia y su ciudad de origen; en tercer lugar, se analizan las relaciones que mantuvo con otros jesuitas toledanos, como Pedro de Ribadeneyra, Juan de Mariana y Dionisio Vázquez. A FIRST- GENERATION EXEMPLARY JESUIT ABSTRACT This article seeks to increase the knowledge of the life of Father Alfonso Salmeron. Despite being an important figure in his time, it has not been studied enough. Varstvo spomenikov, 44 Mateja Neža Sitar The Only (Self)Portrait of Quaglio and the Consequences of its Renovation Key words: Ljubljana cathedral, Giulio Quaglio, self-portrait, monument preservation service, conser- vation and restoration procedures, Baroque painting technique, removal of impurities, retouching Abstract In the early 18th century, in the heyday of Baroque art in Ljubljana, the dean and patron of the construc- tion of the new Ljubljana cathedral, Janez Anton Dolničar, commissioned the northern Italian painter Giulio Quaglio (1668–1751) to adorn the cathedral of St Nicholas with frescoes. The Lombard Baroque painter, who was born in Laino on Lake Como, was a distinguished mural painter in Friuli and Gorizia, and he created his greatest masterpiece of his virtuoso artistic career in the illusionist murals in the inte- rior and on the exterior of the Ljubljana cathedral (1703–1706). Later, in 1721–1723, he returned with his son and completed the murals in the chapels of the nave. At that time the frescoes in the Ljubljana cathedral represented one of the largest cycles in Slovenia, and moreover, they were the most important commission of the artist. Because of this, he added his self-portrait to the images, which, according to research, is the only such example in his oeuvre in Italy, Austria and Slovenia. In 2002 a team from the Restoration Centre initiated one of its most complex and demanding conserva- tion and restoration projects on approximately 532 square metres of murals on the vault and western wall of the Ljubljana cathedral. The difficulty level of the project is evident from the methodology and organisation of the four-year work process, which in addition to concrete restoration procedures on the murals also entailed ongoing research, analysis, verification, study and documentation from various ex- pert points of view. -

What Does It Mean to be a Jesuit Parish? What does it mean that St. Thomas More is a Jesuit parish? For starters, it means that the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis has entrusted the care of STM to the care of the Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). The Jesuits are the largest international Catholic religious order of men. We were founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola and approved by the Holy See (Pope Paul III) in 1540. We are probably best known for our schools. In the U.S. we have over 25 Jesuit colleges and universities (such as Marquette, Creighton, Loyola Chicago, Boston College, Fordham, Georgetown, Xavier, and Gonzaga) and over 50 high schools as well as Nativity Middle Schools and parish grade schools like ours. We also have retreat houses like Demontreville here in the Twin Cities and parishes like ours. The Jesuits have a unique spirituality based on the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius often referred to as Ignatian Spirituality. Different Catholic er ligious orders like the Franciscans, Dominicans, Benedictines and Jesuits emphasize different aspects of the Gospel based on the spirituality of their founder. Franciscans emphasize poverty, Dominicans preaching, Benedictines hospitality. Jesuits emphasize discernment – discovering God’s will for us as individuals and as a community. St. Ignatius had a deep belief that God speaks directly to us in our hearts and souls. He believed that if we are attentive to God’s voice within, we can discern God’s call to us. Our parish discernment about how we could respond to the needs of immigrants was a good example of how we as a parish tried to hear and respond to God’s call to us in our time and place. -

St. Francis Xavier: Letter from Japan, to the Society of Jesus there is nothing of which they are so proud as of weapons adorned with in Europe, 15521 gold and silver. They always wear swords and daggers both in and out of Francis Xavier was one of the first members of the Jesuits. In the house, and when they go to sleep they hang them at the bed’s head. In 1541, he left Europe as a missionary to the “East Indies.” He spent short, they value arms more than any people I have ever seen. They are time in India, where he met a Japanese man named Anger who converted to Christianity and took the name Paul. Xavier travelled to excellent archers, and usually fight on foot, though there is no lack of Japan in 1549 and worked as a missionary there until 1552; he horses in the country. They are very polite to each other, but not to planned a missionary trip to China, but died of illness in 1552. These two letters report on his trip to Japan. The first was intended to be sent foreigners, whom they utterly despise. They spend their means on arms, back to Europe and therefore gives more background information; the bodily adornment, and on a number of attendants, and do not in the least second was sent to the Jesuits in India and therefore has more detailed care to save money. ABSTRACT This thesis is concerned with the representation of children on sculptural funerary commemoration, with a focus on freedmen panel reliefs and funerary altars. Although there is evidence found from all regions of the Empire, the majority of the material discussed here is from the city of Rome itself. Representations of young children first appear on freedmen panel reliefs, which date to the end of the Republic and were produced into the first century of the Empire. When this genre declined in popularity at the end of the first century AD, funerary altars emerged as the new, preferred form of commemoration. The goal of this thesis is to show that these two types of funerary monuments reveal much about the children themselves, but also provide insight into the social and cultural identity of their parents. -

Without a doubt it refers to a human friendship, born of closeness and mutual support, of concern and care for one another, of profound spiritual communication… It also signifies a friendship that roots all its human potential in the Lord as its Source. It is He who has called them freely and personally. The Poet in an Artificial Landscape: Ovid at Falerii Abstract For Ovid, erotic elegy is a quintessentially urban genre. In the Amores, excursions outside the city are infrequent. Distance from the city generally equals distance from the beloved, and so from the life of the lover. This is peculiarly true of Amores, 3.13, a poem that seems to signal the end of Ovid’s career as a literary lover and to predict his future as a poet of rituals and antiquities. For a student of poetry, it is tempting to read the landscape of such a poem as purely symbolic; and I will begin by sketching such a reading. But, as we will see, testing this reading against what can be known about the actual landscape in which the poem is set forces a revision of the results. And this revision is twofold. In the first instance, taking into account certain specific eaturf es of the landscape makes possible the correction of the particular, somewhat limited interpretive hypothesis that a purely literary reading would most probably recommend, and this is valuable in itself. -
