    THE KING AS WARRIOR IN SAMUEL-KINGS by SAM MEIER The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio 43210 It is becoming increasingly complex to speak of the Deuteronomistic (Dtr) historians, the boundaries of their works, and the theological and historical issues of significance to them. Noth's assertion that the Dtr His­ tory was penned by a single historian using written sources is no longer widely accepted despite continued attempts to perceive a broad unity to the work. 1 The fracturing of the work's unity has multiplied the number of ancient Israelites who now bear the epithet Dtr with a distinguishing numeral (DtrL Dtr2) or letter (DtrH, DtrP, DtrN).2 Large blocks of mate­ i:ial within the history still lack a consensus as to origin: the narratives associated with David's rise to kingship, for example, are explained by a variety of source analyses. 3 Even the context and date of the succession history is suspect, with some even affirming that it is both post-Dtr and antimonarchic (Van Seters 1983, pp. 277-291). It is evident that considerable work remains to be done in identifying with confidence the varied trajectories of the Dtr work(s) (cf. Ackroyd, 1985, 301-305). The problem is further compounded by the numerous sources, whose content may (or may not) be related to the primary and changing interests of the Dtr historians. In a work of such broad scope encompassing diverse sociological, political and religious ideologies, identifying what is I. Before his ascen- sion to the throne, there were many structural defects in the kingdom. The immediate task before him was how to restructure and re-engi- neer the socio-religious decay he met on the ground, to which he responded promptly and with a record of success. This paper, there- fore, through narrative analysis, identifies the leadership and follow- ership qualities that assisted Josiah in his reform policy in Southern Israel and recommends, through content analysis, the imbibing of those qualities by the Nigerian leaders and citizenry in their quest for a sustained democracy. A INTRODUCTION The concept of democracy is traceable to the ancient Greeks, specifically the city-state of Athens in the fifth century BCE. The word democracy is derived from two Greek words “demos” meaning the people and “kratos,” meaning “power” or “rule.”1 Defining democracy is a herculean task because there is no universally acceptable definition. However, it has been defined by various schol- ars based on the features that a true democracy must have.     11. BIBLICAL EPIC: 1 Kings Notes rown 1 Kings 1: David was very old. His son Adonijah exalted himself as king. When David heard he told Zadok and Nathan to anoint Solomon as king. 1-2 Kings, divided by convenience, describe the period of the monarchy after David in ancient Israel (970–586 BC). David’s parting speech to Solomon in ch. 2, drawing richly from Deuteronomy, sets the agenda. Beginning with Solomon, and then all the succeeding kings of Israel and Judah, the kings are weighed in relation to the Mosaic law code and found wanting. Israel’s sinfulness eventually leads to the exile to Babylon in 586 BC, but there remains hope because God’s chosen royal line has not come to an end (2 Kings 25:27-30), and God remains ready to forgive those who are repentant. The books are not merely a chronicle of events, but history from God’s perspective and how He is directing all history toward a goal. The Bible is a story about God and how His Kingdom will come. Every “son of David” that is found wanting adds to the yearning for a greater David who will sit on David’s throne forever. We could summarize the book in this way: “Ruling justly and wisely depends on obeying God’s word, and disobeying has serious consequences.” • 1:1-4. David in His Old Age. David’s waning life is seen in his inability to get warm. Ancient medical practice provided warmth for the sick by having a healthy person “lie beside” them.

    Oct. 31/Nov. 1, 2015 Confession, Repentance, and Leadership Courage to Lead Series 1 Samuel 7:2-17 Pastor Bryan Clark It’s not so unusual that Christians make bad decisions, and that’s compounded by more bad decisions, and sometimes we find ourselves in a pattern of sin and bad decisions, and ultimately end up neck-deep in the mud. In the mud, life gets miserable and we reach a point when we hit bottom and we want out. So we cry out to the Lord to deliver us and to set us free. Deep in our soul there’s a longing for something different and something better than the bondage of sin that we’re experiencing. In that moment, if you’re serious about returning to the Lord with all your heart and experiencing the life that God wants for you, there are two critical steps that are necessary if you’re really going to be serious about addressing sin and finding freedom. What are those critical two steps? That’s what we’re going to talk about today. If you have your Bible, turn with us to 1 Samuel, Chapter 7. If you’re visiting with us, we’re working our way through the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel. Last week we ended with the ark of the covenant being returned to the people of God. It is basically in storage in Kiriath-jearim, and there it will remain for the next one hundred years. The battle of Aphek, which is 1 Samuel 4, was about 1100 BC.
