The Book of 1Samuel—2:12-17 “The Importance of Godly Leadership” Pt.1 (2/8/15) When we started 1Samuel we said that the main issue this book deals with is the issue of leadership. In fact both 1 & 2 Samuel chronicle for us the lives of three of Israel’s most famous leaders— Samuel, Saul and David. Samuel served the nation as a prophet, priest and judge; Saul as its first king and David as its second king. Since these things were written for our learning (Rom.15:4)—the thing we learn from the history of Israel is that in the absence of godly leadership a nation will suffer and decline—whereas in the presence of godly leadership it will prosper and be strengthened. Now up to this point, the focus has been on Elkanah and his family (1:1–2:11)—but now it will shift to Eli and his family (2:12–3:21). And we’re going to see how the Holy Spirit will be contrasting the corrupt leadership of Eli and his sons (priesthood) with the godly leadership God was raising up in the person of Samuel. For example—Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas “abhorred the offering of the Lord” (2:17)—but “Samuel ministered before the Lord” (v. 18). 1 The two brothers committed evil deeds at the tabernacle and invited God’s judgment—but Samuel served at the tabernacle and grew in God’s favor (v. 26). The priestly line would end in Eli’s family—but Samuel would be called of God to carry on a holy priesthood (2:34–3:1). -

11. BIBLICAL EPIC: 1 Kings Notes rown 1 Kings 1: David was very old. His son Adonijah exalted himself as king. When David heard he told Zadok and Nathan to anoint Solomon as king. 1-2 Kings, divided by convenience, describe the period of the monarchy after David in ancient Israel (970–586 BC). David’s parting speech to Solomon in ch. 2, drawing richly from Deuteronomy, sets the agenda. Beginning with Solomon, and then all the succeeding kings of Israel and Judah, the kings are weighed in relation to the Mosaic law code and found wanting. Israel’s sinfulness eventually leads to the exile to Babylon in 586 BC, but there remains hope because God’s chosen royal line has not come to an end (2 Kings 25:27-30), and God remains ready to forgive those who are repentant. The books are not merely a chronicle of events, but history from God’s perspective and how He is directing all history toward a goal. The Bible is a story about God and how His Kingdom will come. Every “son of David” that is found wanting adds to the yearning for a greater David who will sit on David’s throne forever. We could summarize the book in this way: “Ruling justly and wisely depends on obeying God’s word, and disobeying has serious consequences.” • 1:1-4. David in His Old Age. David’s waning life is seen in his inability to get warm. Ancient medical practice provided warmth for the sick by having a healthy person “lie beside” them. -

Oct. 31/Nov. 1, 2015 Confession, Repentance, and Leadership Courage to Lead Series 1 Samuel 7:2-17 Pastor Bryan Clark It’s not so unusual that Christians make bad decisions, and that’s compounded by more bad decisions, and sometimes we find ourselves in a pattern of sin and bad decisions, and ultimately end up neck-deep in the mud. In the mud, life gets miserable and we reach a point when we hit bottom and we want out. So we cry out to the Lord to deliver us and to set us free. Deep in our soul there’s a longing for something different and something better than the bondage of sin that we’re experiencing. In that moment, if you’re serious about returning to the Lord with all your heart and experiencing the life that God wants for you, there are two critical steps that are necessary if you’re really going to be serious about addressing sin and finding freedom. What are those critical two steps? That’s what we’re going to talk about today. If you have your Bible, turn with us to 1 Samuel, Chapter 7. If you’re visiting with us, we’re working our way through the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel. Last week we ended with the ark of the covenant being returned to the people of God. It is basically in storage in Kiriath-jearim, and there it will remain for the next one hundred years. The battle of Aphek, which is 1 Samuel 4, was about 1100 BC. -

It is in 1st Samuel, chapters 4-6. It is weird, and it is wise. I Imagine we are in a rugged valley. Up one side camps the Philistine army. The Philistines are relatively new to this land of Canaan, maybe a few generations. Their ancestors sailed in from islands in the Aegean and settled along Canaan’s coast. That is good land. They’ve built five fortress cities. They are expanding north, south and east, pressing against their neighbours. Especially Israel.1 Up the other side of the valley is the Israelite army. We are generations after the Lord (through Joshua) led Israel into this Land of Promise. We are even longer after God (through Moses) brought Israel out of slavery in Egypt. And even longer after God (through Abraham and Sarah) began God’s rescue mission for all peoples of the earth, through this one tiny and unlikely people. God called and formed Israel within a precarious, contentious, and dangerous world. Because this is the real world, where salvation needs to happen. For three centuries now, the tribes of Israel have lived in this hill country of Canaan. They’re holding on, barely. They are pressed from all sides, and battling within. They’re struggling to stay faithful to God. -

Therefore, the LORD spoke to Moses about Phinehas, what he did, and the consequences. (Numbers 25:11) Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy. -

SMALL GROUP NOTES : 1 SAMUEL 2 vs 12 – 27 Read the passage Thoughts on the passage In some ways this passage in 1 Samuel 2 reads like an answer to a “compare and contrast” questions in an exam paper as it ebbs and flows. In verse 11 we see Samuel serving in the temple, then we are shown the sons of Eli the priest, Hophni and Phinehas, committing sins, then Samuel serving, then Hophni and Phinehas committing sins, then Samuel growing before we move into prophecy and judgement in the verses after our reading. On the one hand we have the Sons of Eli brought up in the home of Eli, a God-fearing parent. They would have been brought up in the ways of God, received instruction from their parents and, we are told, they were honoured or, to put it another way, they were loved, by Eli. In terms of growing up in a way that introduced them to a relationship with God it could be said that things were stacked in their favour. And yet, despite this, we are told that they “did not know” God. To “know” God is not just intellectual or theoretical recognition. It is not the ability to recite the law by rote nor to understand it with their mind. To “know” God is to enter fellowship with him and acknowledge his claim on your life. To “know” God implies a covenant relationship with him. Despite their upbringing, that on paper would weigh in their favour, the sons of Eli had no relationship with God. -

Notes on 1 Kings 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable TITLE The Books of 1 and 2 Kings received their names because they document the reigns of the 40 monarchs of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah following David. Israel had 20 kings, and Judah had 20, including one female who usurped the throne: Athaliah. In the Hebrew Bible, 1 and 2 Kings were one book until the sixteenth century. The ancients regarded them as the continuation of the narrative begun in Samuel. The Septuagint (Greek) translation of the Hebrew text, dating from about 250 B.C., was the first to divide Kings into two books. That division has continued to the present day. The Septuagint translators, however, called these two books 3 and 4 Kingdoms (or Reigns). First and 2 Kingdoms (or Reigns) were our 1 and 2 Samuel. Jerome's Vulgate (Latin) translation, which dates to about A.D. 400, changed the name from Kingdoms to Kings. "The English Bible presents the books primarily as historical accounts. Their placement next to 1, 2 Chronicles demonstrates the collectors' interest in detailing all [not all] the events of Israel's history. In contrast, the Hebrew Bible places Joshua-Kings with the prophets, which highlights their common viewpoints. This decision implies that 1, 2 Kings are being treated as proclamation and history."1 First and 2 Kings are the last of the Former Prophets books in the Hebrew Bible.
