1 Solved Openings in Losing Chess Mark Watkins, School of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Sydney 1. INTRODUCTION Losing Chess is a chess variant where each player tries to lose all one’s pieces. As the naming of “Giveaway” variants has multiple schools of terminology, we state for definiteness that captures are compulsory (a player with multiple captures chooses which to make), a King can be captured like any other piece, Pawns can promote to Kings, and castling is not legal. There are competing rulesets for stalemate: International Rules give the win to the player on move, while FICS (Free Internet Chess Server) Rules gives the win to the player with fewer pieces (and a draw if equal). Gameplay under these rulesets is typically quite similar.1 Unless otherwise stated, we consider the “joint” FICS/International Rules, where a stalemate is a draw unless it is won under both rulesets. There does not seem to be a canonical place for information about Losing Chess. The ICGA webpage [H] has a number of references (notably [Li]) and is a reasonable historical source, though the page is quite old and some of the links are broken. Similarly, there exist a number of piecemeal Internet sites (I found the most useful ones to be [F1], [An], and [La]), but again some of these have not been touched in 5-10 years. Much of the information was either outdated or tangential to our aim of solving openings (in particular responses to 1. e3), We started our work in late 2011. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this writing is to report on the current status of Losing Chess. Since the naming of this class of games has variant schools of terminology, we state for definiteness that captures are compulsory (but the choice of the player on turn when there are multiple captures), that the King has no special characteristics, and that castling is not legal. Promotion to a King is allowed. This is also sometimes called Antichess. In particular, we give information about responses to 1. e3. Some of this dates back more than a decade, and is due to others. However, other parts described herein have a few novel features. Unless otherwise stated, we use the International Rules, so that a stalemate is a win for the player on move.1 1.1 Historical sources There exist a number of piecemeal Internet sites that have various information about Losing Chess. However, many of the pages of interest have not been touched in 5-10 years. Most of them use FICS rules, for which stalemate is a win for the player with fewer pieces (and drawn when the piece counts are equal). Chapter 15 New pieces (2) : Pieces with limited range [This chapter covers pieces whose range of movement is limited, in the same way that the moves of the king and knight are limited in orthochess.] 15.1 Pieces which can move only one square [The only such piece in orthochess is the king, but the ‘wazir’ (one square orthogonally in any direction), ‘fers’ or ‘firzan’ (one square diagonally in any direction), ‘gold general’ (as wazir and also one square diagonally forward), and ‘silver general’ (as fers and also one square orthogonally forward), have been widely used and will be found in many of the games in the chapters devoted to historical and regional versions of chess. Some other flavours will be found below. In general, games which involve both a one-square mover and ‘something more powerful’ will be found in the section devoted to ‘something more powerful’, but the two later developments of ‘Le Jeu de la Guerre’ are included in this first section for convenience. One-square movers are slow and may seem to be weak, but even the lowly fers can be a potent attacking weapon. ‘Knight for two pawns’ is rarely a good swap, but ‘fers for two pawns’ is a different matter, and a sound tactic, when unobservant defence permits it, is to use the piece with a fers move to smash a hole in the enemy pawn structure so that other men can pour through. Of all variants of chess, it has prcv€d to be the dchest in fascinating endgames. 1 - Black to move 2 - win in 5 moves 2a - after 1...Ka8 King against knight is usually a win tbr the king, but I shows an exceptional position; Black to play cannot sacrifice bK, and White will sacrifice on a7 next move. Stan Goldovski's 2 (The Problemist, March 1999) shows an exception to the exc€ption. Play starts 1Nb5 Ka8 (see 2a), but now White must 4or play 2 Na7 (after 2..,Kxa7 he will have nothing better than 3 d8K with a draw); instead, he must repeat the procedure,2 Nc7, and only after 2..,Ka7 can he sacrifice wN: 3 NaS KxaS 4 d8B and wB can be sacrificed next move. 3 Na6 Kxa6 4 d8R also wins, but not in 5. 3-win 3a - after 2...Ka8 3b-after5Nd5 2 was a deliberatc composition, but Fabrice Liardet has pointed out that the "longcst wins" with 2N v K and B+N v K, discovered by my computer analysis of three-piece endings in Dgcembcr 1997, involve the same manoeuvre. -

L’inde, microcosme ludique ? Michel Van Langendonckt, Sciences et techniques du jeu, Haute Ecole de Bruxelles – Haute Ecole Spaak L’Inde est-elle un microcosme ludique ? Autrement dit, les principaux jeux du monde sont-ils indiens ou originaires d’Inde ? Y sont-ils pratiqués aujourd’hui ? A défaut, quelles seraient les spécificités des jeux indiens ou originaires d’Inde, que nous dit l’ethno-ludisme du subcontinent indien ? Telles sont les questions que nous nous posons. Quelques éléments de réponses apparaitront au cours d’un survol socio-historique des jeux inventés ou adoptés en Inde. D’une compilation des recherches antérieures consacrées aux jeux indiens et d’un relevé personnel émergent des évocations littéraires, des représentations et du matériel de jeux. Ils sont plus particulièrement issus de six sources : 1° Les jeux de dés et de course (ou de parcours symboliques) évoqués dans les textes sanskrits. 2° Les représentations sculptées de Shiva et Pârvâti jouant (IIe – XIe siècle, Inde centrale) . 3° L’album de croquis « Vie et coutumes indiennes » (fin du XVIIIe siècle, nord de l’Inde). 4° Les tabliers de jeux gravés dans le sol au Karnataka (VIIIe-XXe siècle, sud de l’Inde). 5° Un coffret multi-jeux du milieu du XIXe siècle (Mysore, sud de l’Inde). 6° Le relevé des pratiques de jeux traditionnels sur plateau réalisé en 1998-1999 dans l’ensemble de l’Inde, sous la direction de R.K Bhattacharya, I.L.
