Thomas Keith A Discography of Robert Bums 1948 to 2002 After Sir Walter Scott published his edition of border ballads he came to be chastised by the mother of James Hogg, one Margaret Laidlaw, who told him: "There was never ane 0 my sangs prentit till ye prentit them yoursel, and ye hae spoilt them awthegither. They were made for singing an no forreadin: butye hae broken the charm noo, and they'll never be sung mair.'l Mrs. Laidlaw was perhaps unaware that others had been printing Scottish songs from the oral tradition in great numbers for at least the previous hundred years in volumes such as Allan Ramsay's The Tea-Table Miscellany (1723-37), Orpheus Caledonius (1733) compiled by William Thompson, James Oswald's The Cale donian Pocket Companion (1743, 1759), Ancient and Modern Scottish Songs (1767, 1770) edited by David Herd, James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum (1787-1803) and A Select Collection of Original Scotish Airs (1793-1818) compiled by George Thompson-substantial contributions having been made to the latter two collections by Robert Burns. -

Introduction to the city of Stirling 3 Scotland's sixth city which is the largest settlement and the administrative centre of Stirling Council Area, Stirling lies between the River Forth and the prominent 122m Settlement Information (400 feet) high crag on top of which sits Stirling Castle. ‘The Vision’ The Robert Burns World Federation Newsletter Issue 47 November 2020 I have decided to give the newsletter the title of ‘The Vision’ as a nod to Burns’s poem of that name in which he bemoans the lack of recognition for poets from his native Ayrshire. His vision involves the appearance the muse Coila. However, the critic David Daiches remarked that ‘the poet does not quite know what to do with her when he brought her in.’ In composing this edition of the newsletter, I felt much the same as I didn’t know what I was going to do about the lack of copy which normally flows in unsolicited from around the world. Fortunately, my colleagues on the Board came up trumps and offered various leads for suitable material. It is a pleasure to report on a very successful Tamfest which explored Burns’s famous poem Tam o’ Shanter in great depth. The importance of music in relation to Burns also comes across strongly with a couple of articles highlighting his continuing influence on contemporary performers. For more information, please contact [email protected]. “AULD LANG SYNE” (1984) A good case can be made that “Auld Lang Syne” is the best known “English” song in the world, & perhaps the best known in any language if we except national anthems. The song is certainly known throughout the English-speaking world, including countries which were formerly part of the British Empire. It is also known in most European countries, including Russia, as well as in China and Japan. Before and during the lifetime of Robert Burns the traditional Scottish song of parting was “Gude Night and Joy be wi’ You a’,” and there is evidence that despite “Auld Lang Syne” Burns continued to think of the older song as such. He wrote to James Johnson, for whom he was writing and collecting Scottish songs to be published in The Scots Musical Museum (6 vols. Edinburgh, 1787-1803) about “Gude Night” in 1795, “let this be your last song of all the Collection,” and this more than six years after he had written “Auld Lang Syne.” When Johnson published Burns’s song it enjoyed no special place in the Museum, but he followed the poet’s counsel with respect to “Gude Night,” placing it at the end of the sixth volume. -

This essay will first make a brief introduction of Robert Burns and make an analysis of A Red Red Rose in the aspects of language, imagery and rhetoric. Keywords: Robert Burns; A Red Red Rose; language; imagery; rhetoric. 1. Robert Burns’ Life Experience Robert Burns (25 January 1759 – 21 July 1796) is a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is one of the most famous poets of Scotland and is widely regarded as a Scottish national poet. Being considered as a pioneer of the Romantic Movement, Robert Burns became a great source of inspiration to the founders of both liberalism and socialism after his death. Most of his world-renowned works are written in a Scots dialect. And in the meantime, he produced a lot of poems in English. He was born in a peasant’s clay-built cottage, south of Ayr, in Alloway, South Ayrshire, Scotland in 1759 His father, William Burnes (1721–1784), is a self-educated tenant farmer from Dunnottar in the Mearns, and his mother, Agnes Broun (1732–1820), is the daughter of a Kirkoswald tenant farmer. Despite the poor soil and a heavy rent, his father still devoted his whole life to plough the land to support the whole family’s livelihood. -

The Songs of Robert Burns

MISCELLANEOUS 473 have had a personal acquaintance with Clarke, the musical editor of the Museum, and that Stenhouse himself communicated to Hogg the ' genuine copy of the air ' which consists principally in leaving out the accidental sharps. The modem set of the air differs from that of the original as in our text. No. 305. Frae the friends and land I love. Scots Musical Mtiseum, 1792, No. J02. Tune, Carron side. The MS. is in the British Museum. The first of a series of Jacobite songs printed in the fourth volume of the Museum. ' In the Interleaved Mtiseum Burns says of the present verses : I added the four last lines by way of giving a turn to the theme of the poem, such as it is.' No other song of the kind has been discovered, and I have failed to find it. The present verses were printed in the Museum with a bad copy of the tune Can-on side. The music in the text is taken from the Caledonian Pocket Cotn- ' panion, c. 1 756, viii. 10, there designated a plaintive air,' which was originally published in 1740. ITo. 306. The fragment is a much revised version of an old song of four stanzas in the Merry Muses. Robert Burns, Pre-Confederation Poets, and Transatlantic Circulation
The “Unfetter’d” Muse: Robert Burns, Pre-Confederation Poets, and Transatlantic Circulation Leith Davis n May 1859, artist and writer James Ballantine published his Chronicle of the Hundredth Birthday of Robert Burns, collecting into one massive volume accounts of 872 celebrations “honouring the Imemory of the Ploughman Bard” that had been held on 25 January that year (v). As Ballantine’s book makes clear, within the British North American colonies, from Pictou, Nova Scotia, to Peterborough, Canada West, a variety of lavish events marked the centenary of the birth of Burns. In Galt, Canada West (named after another Scottish writer, John Galt), for example, over one thousand inhabitants gathered at the Town Hall to enjoy “recitations from the Poet’s works; some of his sweetest, most patriotic, and manly songs; addresses from gentlemen of well-known ability; music from the Galt band; singing by the Galt Philharmonic Society; and exquisite music from the piano” (514). In Montreal, Canada East, the City Concert Hall was “beautifully and appropriately decorated for the occasion with illustrations of and quota- tions from the works of Burns, under the direction and auspices of the Montreal Burns Club” (530). In Toronto, Canada West, there were two banquets, one at the Rossin Hotel and one at the nearby St. Lawrence Hall, each with elaborate toasts and musical performances. Even small towns joined in the centenary celebrations. In Downie, Canada West, one Mr. James Simpson “invited a number of his friends and neighbours to his house, on the 25th, to do honour to the memory of the poet” (513).
