It challenges the notion of a “great divide” between Republic and Revolution by tracing contentious interactions between technocrats, politicians, and financial elites on one hand, and mobilized, mostly-Afro-descended tenants and shantytown residents on the other hand. The dynamics of housing inequality in Havana not only reflected existing socio- racial hierarchies but also produced and reconfigured them in ways that have not been systematically researched. -

It is located 150 kilometres south of the tip of the US state of Florida and east of the Yucatán Peninsula. On the east, Cuba is separated by the Windward Passage from Hispaniola, the island shared by Haiti and Dominican Republic. The total land area is 114,524 sq km, which includes the Isla de la Juventud (formerly called Isle of Pines) and other small adjacent islands. Peoples Main languages: Spanish Main religions: Christianity (Roman Catholic, Protestant), syncretic African religions The majority of the population of Cuba is 51% mulatto (mixed white and black), 37% white, 11% black and 1% Chinese (CIA, 2001). However, according to the Official 2002 Cuba Census, 65% of the population is white, 10% black and 25% mulatto. Although there are no distinct indigenous communities still in existence, some mixed but recognizably indigenous Ciboney-Taino-Arawak-descended populations are still considered to have survived in parts of rural Cuba. Furthermore the indigenous element is still in evidence, interwoven as part of the overall population's cultural and genetic heritage. There is no expatriate immigrant population. More than 75 per cent of the population is classified as urban. The revolutionary government, installed in 1959, has generally destroyed the rigid social stratification inherited from Spanish colonial rule. During Spanish colonial rule (and later under US influence) Cuba was a major sugar-producing territory. -

As the distinction between the two major groups of Indians in the Greater Antilles-the Ciboney and Arawak-has sharpened, it has become apparent that the areas of their respectivecultures differ fundamentally,with only the Ciboney areas correspond- ing to Fewkes'conception of distributionby islands.The Arawak areascut across the islands instead of enclosing them and, moreover,are sharply distinct during only the second of the three periods of Arawak occupation.It is the purpose of the presentarticle to illustratethese points and to suggest explanationsfor them. -

Since necessary data in Cuba is rare or nonexistent, water- quality standards, pollutant data, and stormwater management data from the state of Florida were used, an approach justified by the highly correlated meteorological patterns between South Florida and Havana. A GIS platform was used to delineate the watershed and sub-watersheds and breakdown the watershed into urban and non-urban land uses. The UM model provides a relative assessment of which river junctions were most likely to exceed water-quality standards, and can model water-quality improvements upon application of appropriate remediation strategies. The pollutants considered were TN, TP, BOD5, fecal coliform, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Cd. -

Antonio de Ulloa Alejandro O'Reilly 1763 – 1770 1763 – 1770 •France’s secret treaty contained provisions to acquire the western Louisiana from Spain in the future. •Spain didn’t really have much interest since there wasn’t any precious metal compared to the rest of the South America and Louisiana was a financial burden to the French for so long. •British obtains all of Florida, including areas north of Lake Pontchartrain, Lake Maurepas and Bayou Manchac. •British built star-shaped sixgun fort, built in 1764, to guard the northern side of Bayou Manchac. •Bayou Manchac was an alternate route to Baton Rouge from the Gulf bypassing French controlled New Orleans. •After Britain acquired eastern Louisiana, by 1770, Spain became weary of the British encroaching upon it’s new territory west of the Mississippi. •Spain needed a way to populate it’s new territory and defend it. •Since Spain was allied with France, and because of the Treaty of Allegiance in 1778, Spain found itself allied with the Americans during their independence. -

In Memoriam In Memoriam: Fidel Castro By Andria Preciado “A revolution is a struggle to the death between the future and the past.” – Fidel Castro Fidel Castro died on November 25, 2016 at 90 years old in Havana, Cuba, after a dictatorship that lasted nearly five decades. Castro was a staple of the 20th century and an emblem of the Cold War. He was either loved or hated by those he encountered – national leaders and civilians alike – some were swayed by his charm and others fled from his brutal leadership. The Russians praised him; the Americans feared him; the world was perplexed by him; and his impact changed Cuba forever. Even after Castro’s death, people were still drawn to him; crowds mourned his passing in Havana, while others celebrated his death in the United States. The radically different reactions to his death across the globe stands as a testament to the revolutionary legacy he left behind. -

On the original soil, at the bottom of the mound, a large qiiantitj- of charcoal and ashes, and one or two bone fragments, probably non-human, were obtained. With these there were fragments of burnt limestone. The failiu-e to find human bones in this mound may be due to its great age, or it may be accounted for by the partial destruction of the mound by cultivation, since such material may have been ploughed out and no record made of the fact. The AVater Supply of Havana, Cuba. C. H. ElGENMAXX. Until recent years the water supply of Havana came from the Almen- dares River. During the nineties the present waterworks, deriving the entire supply from a large spring at Vento. on the south bank of the Almendares River, was completed. The Vento Springs and the covered aqueduct leading its waters under the Almendares River and into Havana are the pride of the city of Havana, which has erected an imposing monu- ment to the engineer by whom the work was conceived. The Vento Springs are surrounded by masonry with walls sloping outward from the springs, except on the side nearest the Almendares River, where they are vertical. The surface water ruuning down the slopes of the masonry ai"e caught in a gutter which discharges it into the Almendares. At the top of the masonry, and some distance removed from its margin, another gutter catches the surface water of the region sloping toward the springs, and discharges this also into the Almendares. -

Hasta La Conquista Resumen El presente estudio discute en términos migratorios y de filiación biológica el patrón de afinidad poblacional entre los antiguos habitantes del área caribeña antes de la llegada de los españoles en el siglo XV. El análisis se enfoca en los rasgos morfológicos dentales cuales indicadores de la distancia poblacional, con el objetivo de inferir si las diferencias en el registro material se correlacionan con diferencias biológicas independientemente de la pertenencia cronológica, y analizar el papel que tuvieron Florida y Venezuela en el proceso migratorio. Con este fin, se estudiaron numerosas poblaciones arqueológicas humanas procedentes de las Antillas mayores y menores, así como del área continental de Venezuela y Florida y que abarcan diferentes culturas y un periodo muy amplio comprendido entre el 4500 a.C. y el 1400 d.C. Los resultados indican que las diferencias en la cultura material se relacionan también con diferencias 494 en el subestado biológico de los grupos analizados; por lo tanto los grupos se originaron de diferentes olas migratorias y se mantuvieron diferentes a pesar de su contemporaneidad. Florida no participó activamente en el desarrollo poblacional del Caribe, mientras que para Venezuela, cuya evidencia arqueológica indica que tuvo un papel en este proceso, los datos dentales no son suficientes para evidenciar esta participación ni para rechazarla. Abstract The present study analyzes from the perspective of dental morphology the biological relationships among the human groups that settled the Caribbean area before the European conquest and discusses it in terms of migratory patterns and biological affinities.
