One sure sign of spring in Dawson is when the taller buildings start roping off the boardwalks with “danger” tape so that people won’t walk under the places where large loads of snow might suddenly attack them. THE KLONDIKE SUN WEDNESDAY, APRIL 18, 2012 P9 Yukon River Breakups – A Statistical Breakdown FAMILY NEWS with Tim Taylor Fatherhood

Men wear many different hats, but the one I cherish most is fatherhood. Everyone tells you that children change your life. I was ready for it and believed what people were telling me, but it never really hits home until you’re fully into it. I have two children as many of you know; Kai who is three years old and Zia Rose, who just turned a year old last week! My wife and the children have been away, visiting family in Montreal, hence my thoughts on fatherhood have come to light. Although, being on my own, no family obligations, no wrestling with sleepless nights, diaper changes and baby routines has been a privilege, I yearn to be back in that great chaotic energy! The Sun obtained funding in late 2009 from the City of Dawson, YTG’s Heritage Branch and the Community Development Fund to conserve and archive early issues and make them available once again in the public domain. This is a great resource for students, writers and historians, and also for prospective tourists with an interest in Dawson City’s life. Each month, we are re-printing our front pages from 20 years ago (seen above) as a souvenir of our lively history. Past issues are available for download on our website, http://klondikesun.com. More will be added periodically throughout the year! A new book compiled by Walter Phelan, a friend of mine, has just come from the publishing house. The reason I write to your paper is because the latter book is essentially about the Klondyke gold rush. The book, in a nutshell, encompasses a series of pictures and letters sent by one John Lee, an Irishman from County Laois, back to his family and friends in Ireland. He left Ireland in the late 1890’s in search of a new life by the Klondyke River. The letters herein detail his exploits during the time of the Klondyke Gold Rush. It is a fascinating insight into the weather, trails, shooting, fishing, mine exploration and a host of other activities carried out by the latter during his time in this rather hostile environment. It is a part of your history as much, if not more, than ours, and this is why I write to you. I would also love to hear from descendants of anybody who knew the latter or any other information you may be able to find. Enclosed you will also find some extracts together with some pictures to give you, the reader, an insight into what the book is trying to achieve. How the transcripts came to be in the capable hands of Walter is another story in itself. Apparently they were bought by a Laois lady at auction in Dublin due to the fact that John was from her native county. Having read the transcripts she then decided that, due to the nature of the material, Walter would no doubt be interested in it as a museum piece. In case you're wondering, Walter owns and runs the Irish Fly Fishing and Game shooting Museum in Attanagh, Co. Laois. In conclusion it would be great to hear from anyone who may have something to add to this wonderful story. For those of you who would like to know more you can contact Walter at the above address or myself via e-mail at [email protected]. Thanking you all in advance. Have a great year.

Nasturtiums have a peppery flavor and, when pickled, they can replace the far more expensive caper.
