MFJ/BLE A PERFORMING ARTS COLLEGE

9th September 2015 Issue No. 2 Parents’ Bulletin Dear Parents

The term has started very well and our new Year 7 students are settling in well. I have had to replace one lost timetable and direct about six students to their classrooms so far and this is par for the course. Our Year 10 and 11 students have been very mature in their approach to their GCSE studies and have also made a very good start.

One hundred and fifty nine students have joined our Year 12 – the highest number for many years now.

Girls Skirts A number of girls have come back to school with skirts that are too short. Please note that we will be issuing detentions to all girls with skirts that are too high, whether rolled up or not, ie: more than four inches or 10cm above the knee.

6th Form Open Evening We have moved all the events concerning our 6th Form forward this year. Our Year 11 students had their taster day last term and it was very successfully received as the feedback forms showed. The 6th Form Open Evening will be held on the 24th September at 7.00pm this year and we look forward to seeing Year 11 students and parents at this informative and pleasant evening. There will be the opportunity to ask A Level teachers about the subjects and to listen to Mr Mather talk about the approach we adopt in our Sixth Form that leads us to success for our students.

SKIING – ALL CHAMPIONSHIPS Whilst skiing in Sunderland is perhaps not the most obvious choice for a summer holiday activity, Eleanor Wilkins and Amy Peterson (both year 11) had the opportunity to spend the August bank holiday weekend doing exactly that; by competing in the All England Championships (Slalom skiing). The two courses of 17 gates were very technical and required close inspection before skiing. Ellie and Amy inspected thoroughly, understood the challenges and skied good, clean runs whilst a number of the big names who attempted top speeds, found aspects of the course too demanding and skied out, resulting in either disqualification or time lost to get back on course. Ellie’s efforts resulted in being placed 2nd in the U16 age group and 5th overall (ladies), whilst Amy, due to year of birth, raced in the U18’s, securing 3rd place in her age group and 12th place overall (ladies). Both girls commit to training 3 times a week, 52 weeks a year and thoroughly deserve such great results! Well done.

POSSIBLE FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR YOUNG TALENTED ATHLETES For more information please visit http://www.sporthampshireiow.co.uk/talentedathletes If you have any questions please contact Mrs Short in PE.

The grant if awarded is intended to ensure that young people are not denied the opportunity to participate at a representative level in sport through financial hardship.

Each of the following criteria must be met before an application will be considered. In some cases, the decision may be made to target support directly, for example, by paying club fees or meeting additional training costs.

MATHS EQUIPMENT ORDERS ONLINE Parents can purchase a scientific calculator for £5.50 and a pack of past papers for exam practice for £2 online. Please could you print the receipt for your purchase and ask your child to bring it to a teacher in the maths office to receive your items. Thank you Mrs James, Mathematics

MUSIC TRIP Gentle reminder that the next instalment in value of £150 is due by the 18th September. Payments can be made online or via cheque brought to the Reception on Tues and Thurs mornings in a clearly labelled envelope (name and surname, form, trip). Mrs T Pejovic, Trip Organiser

PARKING Can we please ask parents not to park or leave their vehicles in the drop off area/bus stop in the morning or at 3.10pm. This makes it very difficult and dangerous for the school bus to drop off/collect and also for people trying to exit the car park. Thank you.

COME AND MEET YOUR PTA The PTA performs an important job raising funds to help pay for the little (and sometimes big) extras that make life more enjoyable for everyone in the school. The more hands there are, the lighter the work and we are, as always, looking for new blood and ideas to boost our fund raising abilities.

The PTA is holding a drinks and nibbles reception on TUESDAY 15th SEPTEMBER to give parents an opportunity to meet the existing committee and find out what we do in an informal setting.

Why not come along for a drink and a chat. There is no commitment on your part we would just love to meet you.

We will be in Room B1.4 – to the left of reception as you approach the school – from 7.30 pm – 9.00 pm. SUPPORT4SEND Formerly known as the Parent Partnership Service, Support 4SEND now offers free, confidential and impartial advice and support to children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities as well as the parents and carers. It covers all areas of special educational needs from age 0-25 and aims to “empower” parent carers and children to make decisions and get their views across in professional arenas.

Independent Parental Supporters are trained to help children and carers understand the complicated procedures and jargon relating to SEND and also the statutory assessment process leading to an Education Health and Care Plan.

Information regarding the service can be obtained by email [email protected] or telephone on 01962-845870 as well as on www.hants.gov.uk/parentpartnership
