Computational Linguistics in the Netherlands Journal 4 (2014) 171-190 Submitted 06/2014; Published 12/2014 Gender Recognition on Dutch Tweets Hans van Halteren [email protected] Nander Speerstra [email protected] Radboud University Nijmegen, CLS, Linguistics Abstract In this paper, we investigate gender recognition on Dutch Twitter material, using a corpus con- sisting of the full Tweet production (as far as present in the TwiNL data set) of 600 users (known to be human individuals) over 2011 and 2012. We experimented with several authorship profiling techniques and various recognition features, using Tweet text only, in order to determine how well they could distinguish between male and female authors of Tweets. We achieved the best results, 95.5% correct assignment in a 5-fold cross-validation on our corpus, with Support Vector Regression on all token unigrams. Two other machine learning systems, Linguistic Profiling and TiMBL, come close to this result, at least when the input is first preprocessed with PCA. 1. Introduction In the Netherlands, we have a rather unique resource in the form of the TwiNL data set: a daily updated collection that probably contains at least 30% of the Dutch public tweet production since 2011 (Tjong Kim Sang and van den Bosch 2013).

    Author: Past, Elena Margarita; Amberson, Deborah Title: Animal Humanities, or, On Reading and Writing the Nonhuman Animal Humanities, or, On Reading and Writing the Nonhuman Elena Margarita Past Wayne State University, United States [email protected] Deborah Amberson University of Florida, United States [email protected] In Marcovaldo, or the Seasons in the City, an imaginative meditation on the relationship between urban and rural spaces in 1950s Italy, Italo Calvino writes that “The city of cats and the city of men exist one inside the other, but they are not the same city” (101). The imagined lines of demarcation between cats and men motivated (a naked) Jacques Derrida to return his cat’s gaze and to write about it in The Animal That Therefore I Am, a text that has become a landmark reference in a growing field that is variously referred to as animal studies, human-animal studies, or animality studies.1 Derrida’s cat helps trace a complex network of relations linking human and nonhuman animals—relations that include questions of companionship, consumption, labor, exploitation, ontology, language, and poiesis, to name but a few. Committed to both interspecies and interdisciplinary methods regardless of its name, the field of animal studies works to rethink the human-animal entanglement within a material world and within texts of all kinds. Cary Wolfe aptly opined that attempting to sum up this vibrant field is akin to “herding cats” (564). This special section of Ecozon@ on “Animal Humanities” proposes to consider the animal question from the specific perspective of the humanities, a discipline alternately considered to be in crisis, in transition, or at the forefront of rethinking a world in crisis.

In 2003, Americans kept 65 million dogs as pets (Dillon, 2005) and approximately 78 million cats with 34 per cent of households owning at least one cat (HSUS, 2005). In 2008, in the United Kingdom, 43 per cent of households owned a pet with 22 percent of these homes owning a dog, a total population of seven and a quarter million dogs. With cat ownership increasing in the United Kingdom, the total population of cats is over seven million with 18 per cent of households owning a cat (PFMA, 2008). Pet ownership is even higher in Australia; one of the highest in the world, 64 per cent of the seven and a half million households in Australia own pets (Petnet, 2003) with four million dogs and two and a half million cats (ABC, 2007). Of these, 91 per cent of pet owners reported feeling very close to their pet (Petnet, 2003). Households spend more on their pets than on child care. ABC (2007) notes that “… what we are witnessing is the rise of the ‘fur family’” (ABC, 2007).

Suitor From the East: Lanvin Said in Talks With Qatar Investor By Miles Socha PARIS — Could Lanvin, one of today’s hottest designer brands, be zeroing in on a financial partner in the Middle East? According to market sources, Lanvin owner Shaw-Lan Wang has been in talks to sell a stake in the French fashion house to an investment vehicle linked to Qatar’s ruling family. The likelihood of a deal could not immediately be learned. “Nothing is cast in stone yet,” noted one industry source, declining to name the entity. Still, the negotiations underscore how Wang is actively exploring possible additional financing at a time when the brand is enjoying strong momentum and reporting rapid sales growth.
