Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal. -

Critical Survey of Graphic Novels LOVE AND ROCKETS LOVE AND ROCKETS Author: Hernandez, Gilbert; Hernandez, Jaime; Her- nandez, Mario Artist: Gilbert Hernandez (illustrator); Jaime Her- nandez (illustrator); Mario Hernandez (illustrator); Jeff Johnson (colorist); Rhea Patton (colorist); Chris Brownrigg (colorist); Steven Weissman (colorist) Publisher: Fantagraphics Books First serial publication: 1982-1996; 2001-2007; 2008- First book publication: 1985- Publication History Soon after brothers Mario, Gilbert, and Jaime Her- nandez self-published their first issue of Love and Rockets in 1981, it caught the eye of Fantagraphics publisher Gary Groth. In 1982, Groth republished the inaugural issue; the first series ofLove and Rockets ran for fifty issues, ending in 1996. All issues in the orig- inal volume were magazine-size, and the comics were black and white. The art duties for the color covers al- ternated between Gilbert and Jaime; one would draw the front cover and the other the back cover, then switching responsibilities for the following issue. In brary editions. 2001, the brothers began their second series of Love and Rockets, which ran for twenty issues, until 2007. Plot Although these issues were smaller than the originals, Love and Rockets contains a variety of narrative arcs, they nonetheless retained a similar format: color covers many of which have convoluted plots. The two pri- illustrated by Jaime and Gilbert and black-and-white mary stories, however, concern the associations of the content written and illustrated by all three brothers. -

Maple Syrup: a Sweet Sign of Early Spring by Paula Mchugh
THE TM 911 Franklin Street Weekly Newspaper Michigan City, IN 46360 Volume 21, Number 8 Thursday, March 3, 2005 Maple Syrup: A Sweet Sign of Early Spring by Paula McHugh Maple sugaring time is when daytime temperatures rise above the 32 degree freezing mark, and then drop again below freezing during the nighttime. Which means that we are now heading into that time of year in early, early spring when the sap starts flowing. Hurray! Hurray for two reasons: who doesn’t look forward to the promise of warmer days ahead, and who doesn’t appreciate the sweetness of pure maple syrup dribbled over a stack of pancakes? Yet, how many of us are aware that we could be tapping our own maple trees about now–if we are fortunate enough to have maples on our property? A recent program about everything you ever wanted to know about maple sugar farming was recently presented at the Deep River County Park Visitor Center by Historic Programs Coordinator Joanna Shearer, and the Beacher was there to learn and pass on a few tips for maple sugaring wannabes. Let’s get the trivia out of the way and tell you right now that Vermont is NOT the number one state for maple sugar pro- duction. New York claims that title. But here in the Midwest, Michigan ranks high as a maple syrup producer. Parke County Indiana, home of the most covered bridges, is a large syrup-producing area. And locally, Deep River Park produced nearly 500 bottles of the sweet syrup last year. -

Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Inger S. B. Brodey Todd Ramón Ochoa Marsha S. Collins Tanya L. Shields Madeline G. Levine © 2016 Donato Fhunsu ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Donato Fhunsu: The Kongo Rule: The Palo Monte Mayombe Wisdom Society (Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe) A Book by Lydia Cabrera An English Translation from the Spanish (Under the direction of Inger S. B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s. -

Cartooning Across the Pond the Big Reuben Wrap Up! This Past
Cartooning Across the Pond The Big Reuben Wrap Up! This past Memorial Day weekend the National Cartoonists Society, had its annual Reuben Awards Weekend in not-so-sunny San Diego, CA… well, we did see some sun on the final day of the festivities, but for most of it we experienced what native San Diegans call “May Gray”. That hardly got us down, however. The weekend was a lot of fun. They usually are, but this one seemed to be turned up a notch. Most of the events took place at the beautiful Omni hotel right at the start of the famous Gaslamp District. Friday, May 23rd The ball got rolling Friday with a terrific slate of guest speakers. As NCS president, I have many things I have to do and oversee throughout the weekend, so I rarely get to catch many of the speakers, but I did get to see the majority of the first three of the day who I thought were great, and I heard nothing but raves about the others: Eddie Pittman- Freelancer, animator and creator of the online graphic novel Red’s Planet, Eddie shared his work from various Disney features like “Mulan” and “Lilo and Stich”, to TV’s “Phineas and Ferb”, to his excellent web comic (which was nominated for a divisional award). Chris Houghton- The second recipient of the Jay Kennedy Memorial Scholarship for cartooning, Chris is a great success story. He’s worked on several animated TV shows, comics, MAD and more, including his own comic Reed Gunther. Greg Evans- The Reuben Award-winning creator of the syndicated comic strip Luann, Greg shared stories of some of his early tries at syndication, and about his 29 years doing Luann.
