UMI films the text directly from the original or copy submitted. Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. The quality of this reproduction is dependent upon the quality of the copy submitted. Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely affect reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyright material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are reproduced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each original is also photographed in one exposure and is included in reduced form at the back of the book. Computational Linguistics in the Netherlands Journal 4 (2014) 171-190 Submitted 06/2014; Published 12/2014 Gender Recognition on Dutch Tweets Hans van Halteren [email protected] Nander Speerstra [email protected] Radboud University Nijmegen, CLS, Linguistics Abstract In this paper, we investigate gender recognition on Dutch Twitter material, using a corpus con- sisting of the full Tweet production (as far as present in the TwiNL data set) of 600 users (known to be human individuals) over 2011 and 2012. We experimented with several authorship profiling techniques and various recognition features, using Tweet text only, in order to determine how well they could distinguish between male and female authors of Tweets. We achieved the best results, 95.5% correct assignment in a 5-fold cross-validation on our corpus, with Support Vector Regression on all token unigrams. Two other machine learning systems, Linguistic Profiling and TiMBL, come close to this result, at least when the input is first preprocessed with PCA. 1. Introduction In the Netherlands, we have a rather unique resource in the form of the TwiNL data set: a daily updated collection that probably contains at least 30% of the Dutch public tweet production since 2011 (Tjong Kim Sang and van den Bosch 2013).

PEGASUS BOOKS FALL 2019 PEGASUS BOOKS FALL 2019 NEW HARDCOVERS THE KING’S WAR The Friendship of George VI and Lionel Logue During World War II Peter Conradi and Mark Logue Following the New York Times bestselling The King’s Speech, this eagerly anticipated sequel takes King George VI and his speech therapist Lionel Logue into the darkest days of World War II. The broadcast that George VI made to the British nation on the outbreak of war in September 1939—which formed the climax of the multi-Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech—was the product of years of hard work with Lionel Logue, his iconoclastic, Australian- born speech therapist. Yet the relationship between the two men did not end there. Far from it: in the years that followed, Logue was to play an even more important role at the monarch’s side. The King’s War follows that relationship through the dangerous days of Dunkirk and the drama of D-Day to eventual victory in 1945—and beyond. Like the first book, it is written by Peter Con- radi, a London Sunday Times journalist, and Mark Logue, Lionel’s grandson, and again draws on exclusive material from the Logue Archive—the collection of diaries, letters, and other documents left by Lionel and his feisty wife, Myrtle. This gripping narrative provides a fascinating portrait of two men and their respective families—the Windsors and the Logues—as they together face the greatest chal- lenge in Britain’s history. PETER CONRADI is an journalist with the London Sunday Times.

This is the first censure against a sabbatical since 1981, when Danny McCabe (a former Deputy President) was censured by Council. A censure motion is, as one officer put it, “an official slap on the wrist”. It means that Council has accepted poor conduct on the part of the of- ficer who is censured. It carries no immediate effect, unlike a no confidence motion, which would have resulted in Ms Rahman’s removal from the DPGS position. The no confidence motion was written by Jon Matthews (Deputy President, Finance & Services), and has been held up in Union Court while vari- ous legalities were discussed. The censure motion also requires that any new paper brought to Council about Ms Rahman’s performance to be a no confidence motion. The new motion cannot be ‘down- graded’ to a censure.
