I imagine being left alone. I feel mean. I touch the Ocean water. I worry I’ll die in a battle. I cry about losing my crew members. I am angry. I understand if people die. I say, “Give me my booty!” I dream about my crew. I try to kill enemies. I hope to take the treasure. I am very demanding. 1 Captain Maggie Joller By: Scurvy Sarah “The Saber” Stefani I am the captain I wonder where my crew is I hear the singing I see the waves sway I want a taco I imagine my taco I feel tired and hungry I touch the side of the boat I worry that I won’t ever get my taco I cry myself to sleep I am hungry I understand that I can’t have a taco I say oh my dreams of tacos I dream I’m floating and eating a taco I try to tell myself no I hope one day I will get a taco I am hungry 2 The Stories Begin 3 Bloody Scallywag By: Captain Jackson “Jack the Gentleman” Perry “Ahoy the ship is closing in master gunner get your men to the cannons and wait for my command or I’ll whip your backs to the bone.” “Boom the sound of the other ships cannons’ when they fired at our ship. “Ahoy first mate get the crew and throw the boarding hooks before the other ship comes back for another shot.” “Fire the cannon’s boom shiver me timbers we hit those sons of biscuit eaters.” “Men get all your cutlasses and tomahawks and boarding hooks and let’s kill these men and send them strait to Davey Jones’ Locker.” “Shoot the cannon’s fire!” Boom—the cannons sounded. “We hit them again! They went around us catch them or I’ll skin one of your backs with my whip and then put it in my sandwich. Throw the boarding hooks and get on the scallywags’ ship. Shoot them; they are trying to cut the ropes!” boom, boom--- the cannons went when we hit them,” walk across the rope and fight them to the death.” “Hay eddy get your brass knuckles and show those little people how to rally fight like a man.” “Ok caption Jackson I’ll crush those scallywag in the scull.” “I go down to the cannon room and right when I get down there a cannon hits my ship and I see some of my men get shards of splinters in them, and one of the splinters go right past my head and hits the guy behind me avast where is my surgeon” “Right here sir! Take these men to your cabin and take care of them. Yes sir! “ “Then I see the captain of the other ship and I quickly walk across the boarding hooks to him and I thrust my sword into his hart and then I take my hand and grab his heart and put his heart up to my mouth and eat it and I say that is for my men you killed. Then I jumped to my ship, and told my first mate to go around the ship and fire the cannons but we were too late the other ship fired and I then saw the wood of our ship brake and go into splinters.” We then fired our cannons the cannons blew into one of the men and the guts of that pirate made a horrible bloody mess.” 4 Then we saw out in the distance there were more ships “avast there are more enemy ship let’s take them down fire the cannons” boom went our cannons when we hit the mass of the other ship the trail of our cannons left holes in the other ship. The ship sank” ahoy we took down one ship let’s do the same to all of the other ships. “Then all the ships went around us and fired there cannons and at the same time we shot our cannons and the cannons hit us and we hit them the terror of the cannons around us made holes in our ship but we did not sink we shot a hole in one of the ships and it sank. But wail we were so busy looking at the ship that was sinking we did not notice that one of the other ships men got on our ship and they shot at us but missed and we then we un shethed our cutlasses and thrusted at them then they did the same they got there cutlasses out and thrusted at us.” “ I then got my gun while my men and the other pirates fought to the death and shot and I hit one guy in the head and after I did that the first mate of the other ship jumped at me with his cutlass and I then swung at him knocking him to the ground and I quickly got my gun and shot at him I missed he then hit my cutlass and gun out of my hand and he then thrusted his cutlass at me I then kicked at him, knocking his cutlass out of his hand and I then could reach my gun I only had one shot so I use it I shot him in the head and his brains were all over the place I then said “ “I love me some brains.” I got his gun out of his pocket and then shot more pirates but there was no more bullets left and then I got a cannon, aim at one of the pirates and shoot and I got lucky and shot two pirates. Then I shoot more of them with the cannons and then there was guts all over the place and I made my men lick it and I made them say they like it. But the battle was not over there was one more big ship left. “The ship was trying to go around us to shoot us. But it went the opposite direction and we fired our cannons first and we hit them, the other ships caption yelled at us.” you won’t get away with this you scallywag!” Then we yelled back. “Yes we will!” I yelled. “Then I yelled again to fire the cannons boom—went our cannons when we made a hole in the other ship.” 5 The Ship Battle of Death By: Dastardly Dizzy Izzy “Shoot My” Bowen As I went to bed the next morning me ship be frozen and we came among a big black old rusty ship upon us. “I’ve never seen this kind of ship before,” said captain Russian princess. “Son of a biscuit eater” said me 1st mate. “It’s time for war!” screamed me captain Russian princess.

    Pirates with Ely Museum Pirate Flags When we now think of a pirate's flag we think of the "Skull and Cross Bones", however many pirates had their own unique designs that in their day would have been well known and would strike fear in the crew of a merchant ship if they saw it. To start with, many pirate ships did not have flags with designs on, instead they used different colour flags to say different things. A plain black flag had been used in the past to show a ship had plague on it and to stay away, so pirates started flying this to cause fear. However it also usually meant that the pirate would accept surrender and spare lives. Others used plain red flags, which dated back to English privateers who used it to show they were not Royal Navy, in pirate use this flag meant no surrender was accepted and no mercy would be shown! Over time pirates started adding their own designs to these plain coloured flags, these unique flags would soon become well known as the pirates reputation increased. Favourite things for pirates to have on their flags were skull, bones or sometimes whole skeletons, all meaning death and aiming to cause fear. They also often used images of swords, daggers and other weapons to show that they were ready to fight. An hourglass would mean that your time is running out as death was coming and a heart was used to show life and death. Jolly Roger Flag A flag would often be made up of one or more of those items and would sometimes include the Captain's initials or a simple outline of a figure depicting the Captain.

    TM Rules The Pirates Christopher Condent An English pirate known for his brutal treatment of prisoners, sailed the seas in the early to mid 1700’s. His exploits ranged from the coast of Brazil to India and the Red Sea. He died in 1770. Jack Rackham Known as Calico Jack for the brightly colored coats and clothing he wore, Rackham was a classic Caribbean pirate, capturing small merchant vessels. After being pardoned once, he returned to piracy and was tried and hanged in Port Royal, Jamaica, in November of 1720. Henry Avery Sailing the Atlantic and Indian Oceans in the 1690’s, Avery was known at one time to be the richest pirate in the world. He is also famous for being one of the few pirates to retain his wealth and retire before either being killed in battle or tried and hanged. Emanuel Wynn This French Pirate is considered by many to be the first to fly the familiar skull and crossbones or ‘Jolly Roger’ flag. He also incorporated the image of an hourglass to tell his victims that time was running out. Playing the Game Goal: The goal of the game is to make three X’s out of your Pirate icons. Setting up the Game: You will need a large flat surface to play. Take the four Pirate Flag Cards (shown on page one) and shuffle them. Each player takes one and does not show it to the other players. The flag you drew is your icon. Keep this face down in front of you. Now, Ghost ship: A wild shuffle the deck and deal four cards face down to each player.
