The purpose of the series is to make available to specialists and the interested public the results of research that, because of its unconventional or controversial nature, might otherwise go unpublished. The editor actively encourages younger, not yet well established, scholars and independent authors to submit manuscripts for consideration. Contributions in any of the major scholarly languages of the world, including Romanized Modern Standard Mandarin (MSM) and Japanese, are acceptable. In special circumstances, papers written in one of the Sinitic topolects (fangyan) may be considered for publication. Although the chief focus of Sino-Platonic Papers is on the intercultural relations of China with other peoples, challenging and creative studies on a wide variety of philological subjects will be entertained. This series is not the place for safe, sober, and stodgy presentations. Sino-Platonic Papers prefers lively work that, while taking reasonable risks to advance the field, capitalizes on brilliant new insights into the development of civilization. The only style-sheet we honor is that of consistency. Where possible, we prefer the usages of the Journal of Asian Studies. Sinographs (hanzi, also called tetragraphs [fangkuaizi]) and other unusual symbols should be kept to an absolute minimum. Sino-Platonic Papers emphasizes substance over form. -

Levy, M.A. Western Michigan University, 1995 This thesis will trace the evolution and modification of the Chinese concept of ret ribution, or paoying, with the Buddhist concept of karma through three periods of Chi nese history: (1) the indigenous phase which comprises the time until Buddhism was introduced to China, (2) the period in which Buddhism was introduced to China and its immediate aftermath, and (3) the post-Buddhist phase in which there was a conscious effort to equate Chinese concepts with non-Chinese concepts, culminating in something that was not singularly Chinese nor wholly Buddhist To illustrate the concepts of retribution I will draw upon folk, or popular litera ture, although philosophical literature, especially for the earlier periods, will be discussed. -

6 Between Merit and Pedigree Evolution of the Concept of “Elevating the Worthy” in Pre-imperial China Yuri Pines Western admirers of Chinese civilization – from the French intellec- tuals of the age of Enlightenment, to the doyen of modern Sinology, John K. Fairbank (1907–91), to countless current scholars – remain fas- cinated with China’s perceived ideology and practice of meritocracy.1 Doubtlessly, these admirers have the point. The idea of “elevating the worthy” (shang xian ) became one of the cornerstones of China’s political ideology ever since the Warring States period (Zhanguo , 453–221 b.c.e.); through much of the imperial period most of the males were technically legible for promotion into the government apparatus; and Chinese history provides not a few examples of persons from a rela- tively humble background who made their way to the top of the political ladder. In all these aspects, Chinese civilization differs markedly from aristocratic cultures elsewhere, such as medieval Europe, in which the pedigree normally played the decisive role in determining one’s future. This background makes it tempting to proclaim meritocracy to be an essential feature of Chinese civilization, such as, supposedly, the family-oriented ethics, ritual-based social hierarchy and the monarchic political system. Yet a closer look at Chinese history would disclose not only that meritocratic ideas and practices did not develop before the Warring States period, but also that their introduction was accompanied by multiple tensions. These tensions, for example, between the prin- ciple of “elevating the worthy” and the ongoing importance of family and of pedigree; between meritocratic government and the hereditary monarchy; and, most significantly, among conflicting views of “worth” (xian ) and “merits” (gong ) stand at the focus of my chapter. -

(The quality of schoolboy “handwriting” – actually brush and ink work – should probably make us all feel inadequate.) Thousands of scholarly commentaries in Chinese have been written in the 2500 years of the Analects’ existence. Because so much important contextual information about the characters and special terms in the text does not appear within the Analects, having originally been provided by teachers, we would find the text almost impossible to read with understanding were it not that early commentators preserved much of this information in their interlinear notes. -

A Cross- Cultural Examination of Individualism and Human Dignity
THE PRIDE OF THE “COTTON-CLAD”: A CROSS- CULTURAL EXAMINATION OF INDIVIDUALISM AND HUMAN DIGNITY Yang Ye Abstract: Max Weber attributes the rise of modern Western society to Puritanism, noting that the Calvinist Protestant found, in his lonely attempt to communicate directly with God, a sense of human dignity and individualism in agreement with the rational structure of democracy. Weber, however, asserts that Confucianism lacks the Protestant way of thinking and hence cannot help with the rise of a modern Chinese society. This essay finds illustrations of Weber’s theory about the West in European civilian intellectuals who confronted authority with dignity, leading to the contemporary tradition of Western intellectuals “as the author of a language that tries to speak truth to power.” It also challenges Weber’s fallacy about China through a study of the varied attitudes of the individual vs. the state in Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism, in the formation of a convention known as “the Pride of the Cotton-Clad,” which may play a role in building a state governed by law and justice and a society that respects all its citizens. I THE GERMAN sociologist Max Weber (1864-1920) has attributed the rise of capitalism and the modern Western political and social structure to that of Puritanism, and he has observed that the Calvinist Protestant found in his inner sense of loneliness, in excluding all mediators between himself and God and in trying to communicate directly with God, a sense of human dignity. This in turn brought about a kind of individualism in agreement with the rational structure of modern Western society.
