Guide to the Flora of the Carolinas, Virginia, and Georgia, Working Draft of 17 March 2004 -- LILIACEAE LILIACEAE de Jussieu 1789 (Lily Family) (also see AGAVACEAE, ALLIACEAE, ALSTROEMERIACEAE, AMARYLLIDACEAE, ASPARAGACEAE, COLCHICACEAE, HEMEROCALLIDACEAE, HOSTACEAE, HYACINTHACEAE, HYPOXIDACEAE, MELANTHIACEAE, NARTHECIACEAE, RUSCACEAE, SMILACACEAE, THEMIDACEAE, TOFIELDIACEAE) As here interpreted narrowly, the Liliaceae constitutes about 11 genera and 550 species, of the Northern Hemisphere. There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. Some hummingbirds are at risk, like other pollinators, due to habitat loss, changes in the distribution and abundance of nectar plants (which are affected by climate change), the spread of invasive Anna’s Hummingbird Nest plants, and pesticide use. Outline of angiosperm phylogeny: orders, families, and representative genera with emphasis on Oregon native plants Priscilla Spears December 2013 The following listing gives an introduction to the phylogenetic classification of the flowering plants that has emerged in recent decades, and which is based on nucleic acid sequences as well as morphological and developmental data. This listing emphasizes temperate families of the Northern Hemisphere and is meant as an overview with examples of Oregon native plants. It includes many exotic genera that are grown in Oregon as ornamentals plus other plants of interest worldwide. The genera that are Oregon natives are printed in a blue font. Genera that are exotics are shown in black, however genera in blue may also contain non-native species. Names separated by a slash are alternatives or else the nomenclature is in flux. When several genera have the same common name, the names are separated by commas. The order of the family names is from the linear listing of families in the APG III report. [DRAFT v. 10] Trillium, as an indicator of deer density Hanover Biodiversity Committee October, 2017 Rationale for this Report Members of the lily family, such as Trillium and Clintonia, are among the favored foods of deer; 30 species of Trillium are found East of the Mississippi. The decline of these plants is mentioned in multiple publications1 as one key indicator of deer over-abundance. Red Trillium (Trillium erectum), also called ‘wake Robin’, found in the north-east and is (or was) fairly common in many Hanover forested neighborhoods. We suggest that monitoring this plant where it is (or once was) common demonstrates that deer density remains unsustainably high and future monitoring of the plant can help determine both the neighborhood density of deer and also serve as an indicator of change in deer density. Monitoring for this plant is easy, with just a small bit of training about the process. This report suggests a serious decline in biodiversity in Hanover over the past 15 years, as indicated by impact on red Trillium at three sites. We believe that with a focused increase in hunting pressure, this and other declining native plants might recover. Red Trillium is a frequent member of typical ‘rich mesic forests2’ plant communities found in Hanover; other plants often found nearby are Virginia waterleaf, blood root, wild ginger, foam flower, blue cohosh, and certain other members of the lily family. Besides aggressive deer browse, these communities are also threatened in varying degrees by invasive plants: garlic mustard, Dame’s rocket, wild parsnip, wild chervil and forget-me-not as well as the usual woody invaders. -

The summer of 2012 was long, hot and brutal, with drought afflicting most of the U.S. Most of my botanical explorations were restricted to Idaho, Wash- ington, Oregon and northern California but even there moisture was below average. In a year like this, seeps, swales, springs, vestigial snowbanks and localized rainstorms became much more important in my search for seeding plants. On the Snake River Plains of southern Idaho and the scab- lands of eastern Washington, early bloomers such as Viola beckwithii, V. trinervata, Ranunculus glaberrimus, Ranunculus andersonii, Fritillaria pudica and Primula cusickiana put on quite a show in mid-April but many populations could not set seed. In northern Idaho, Erythronium idahoense flowered extensively, whole meadows were covered with thousands of the creamy, pendant blossoms. One of my most satisfying finds in the Hells Canyon area had to be Sedum valens. The tiny glaucous rosettes, surround- ed by a ring of red leaves, are a succulent connoisseur’s dream. Higher up, the brilliant blue spikes of Synthyris missurica punctuated the canyon walls. In southern Oregon, the brilliant red spikes of Pedicularis densiflora lit up the Siskiyou forest floor. Further north in Oregon, large populations of Erythronium elegans, Erythronium oregonum ssp. leucandrum, Erythro- nium revolutum, trilliums and sedums provided wonderful picture-taking opportunities. Eriogonum species did well despite the drought, many of them true xerics. -

Lilium columbianum (Columbia Lily) Predicted Suitable Habitat Modeling Distribution Status: Present State Rank: S2 (Species of Concern) Global Rank: G5 Modeling Overview Data Source Last Updated: October 27, 2016 Model Produced On: June 11, 2021 Deductive Modeling Modeling Process, Outputs, and Suggested Uses This is a simple rule-based model using species occurrences delineated for vascular and non-vascular plant species. These species could not be modeled with inductive methods, either due to limited observations or spatial extent or because an inductive model had poor performance. Species occurrences are discretely mapped polygons where the species has been documented. Plant species occurrence polygons are delineated by the MTNHP Botanist, and can be generated in two ways: 1) Polygons are hand-mapped and scaled to aggregate neighboring observation points and their adjacent habitat, while trying to exclude barriers, reduce known unoccupied habitat, and ignore management boundaries, or 2) Circular polygons are automatically generated by buffering the single observation point by its location uncertainty distance. For compatibility with other predictive distribution models the Montana Natural Heritage Program produces, we have intersected these species occurrences with a uniform grid of hexagons that have been used for planning efforts across the western United States (e.g. Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies - Crucial Habitat Assessment Tool). Each hexagon is one square mile in area and approximately one kilometer in length on each side. Any hexagon that intersected a species occurrence was classified as suitable habitat. Model outputs are not evaluated and we suggest they be used to generate potential lists of species that may occupy lands within each hexagon for the purposes of landscape-level planning.
