From the College Sport Captain

Round 5 of AIC sport saw Ashgrove take on Villanova, with all First’s teams playing away. The AFL boys were in a tight contest throughout the game however ran away with the win in the last quarter. It was a special win for the boys with the highlight being Tyler Galligan’s goal from the pocket in front of the swarm. The volleyballers were victorious against a tough Villa side. Adam Green again played another stand out game. The cricketers unfortunately lost their ‘premiership game’ against Villa. Not enough runs on the board cost the boys however special mention must go to Tom Philp for an outstanding bowling performance and a tidy batting display.

Marist College Ashgrove - The Buzz - Page 3 From the College Sport Captain

This week Tom Collier sat down with our Sport School Officer Matt Ingram and Year 8A Cricket Player Harry Frost. TIME OUT WITH ... MATT INGRAM - SPORT SCHOOL OFFICER

What is your proudest moment in coaching/playing/work you do? For a number of years, I was fortunate enough to coach an age-group of boys through a large part of their school Rugby and into Colts at club. My proudest achievement has been witnessing their development, and achievement, within the game culminating in a few premierships and some boys going on to pretty big things. My pride comes from the fact that they enjoyed it enough to keep playing through school together and beyond, and that I was a small part of allowing that to happen. To me, mateship is the most satisfying aspect of being involved in competitive sport and is something that separates it from any other pursuit in life. If you were to give one bit of advice to any young player starting to play, what would it be? To just enjoy the ride of playing sport with your mates, new and old. As someone who had to give it up while I was at school because of serious injury I can honestly say that it should just all be about enjoying yourself. If you do that, then everything else, like performance and selections, look after themselves. Regardless of the level you play at, playing sport for your school are the moments that you remember for years with your mates when you leave, and that’s worth more than anything. If you could go to anywhere in the World, where would it be and why? Somewhere I’ve never been that I’d love to go would be to South Africa for an Australian Cricket or Wallabies tour. To be able to sit in the sun on the hill at Newlands Cricket Ground with Table Mountain in the background, or at Ellis Park for a Test match would be a couple of pretty epic things ticked off the bucket list.

TIME OUT WITH ... HARRY FROST

What sort of player are you? I am the opening batsmen for the 8A’s cricket team. I also bowl some medium-pace. I consider myself a pretty patient player and I love driving the ball. I’m also the captain of the 8A’s which makes it even better to lead from the front. Give us a brief history of your playing career so far? What are some of your goals in cricket? I started playing for Valleys Cricket Club when I was about 6 years old. I’ve been lucky enough to be in the A’s throughout my time at Ashgrove. I made the U12 QLD schoolboys cricket team. My next goal would probably be making the 1st XI at school and play for one day. How has your season gone so fair individually and as a team? Currently we are undefeated with 3 wins. We have been playing really well as a team and contributing evenly. I’ve been able to score a few runs this season. In Round 1 I got 57*, Round 2 I got 41 and Round 3 I got 18. So, it’s been good to spend some time in the middle. Iona in Round 7 I think will end up being our toughest game so I’m looking forward to that one.

TEAM TEAM REPORT

10A Winning the toss and batting first the 10As had a shaky start being 2/0 off the first over. Bailey Russo (42) and Max Hrstich (21) consolidated the innings combined with late hitting from Marcus Zipf (14) saw us reach 102. Some early pressure through tight bowling and good fielding restricted villa 5/25, but 102 was never enough as it was chased down with three overs to spare.

10B With Ashgrove winning the toss, Villa were sent into bat in a much-anticipated match for important aggregate points. Ryan Connolly struck early in the 3rd over with the help of some steady hands from skipper Lachlan Ford, boosting Ashgrove’s confidence. Villa began to steady the ship until Joey Ikin’s spell of 3/6 accompanied by Liam Morris’ 2/6 reopened the door for Ashgrove to capitalise on the Villa lower order and restrict them to a score of 123. Ashgrove went into bat with high hopes, and due to some strategical bowling from Villa attack, the boys fell to 7/50. However, on the back of new recruit Blake Harold and up-and-coming all-rounder Ryan Connolly with 34 and 39 respectively, Ashgrove finished their innings on 8/124. This silenced the Villa attack and putting the next Opponent of Padua on watch. Unreal effort boys and they should be congratulated!

10C 10C began early on Saturday morning at Kianawah Park; the boys decided to bat first and faced a tough opposing bowling attack from Villanova. A great partnership led by Angus Blomley and Will Fitzgerald allowed the team to get a competitive score. Despite their best efforts and some solid bowling, the team

10D Gold Ashgrove, led by Isaac Gay were sent into bat by St. Peter’s and were quickly behind in the match after the loss of three quick wickets. A gritty 28 from Jack Billing supported by Hugh Faggotter and Michael Nolan led the 10Ds to post a score of 9/58. St. Peter’s got off to a flying start in the chase despite some fiery bowling from Connor Lyons and Jimmy Boland. In the end, Ashgrove’s resolute fielding efforts were not enough, with the visitors chasing the total down.

AIC AFL 2020 - ROUND 5 VS VILLANOVA COLLEGE - SATURDAY 7 MARCH

TEAM TEAM REPORT

1st XVIII The MCA 1st XVIII played an excellent brand of footy to come away with a 27-point win in wet conditions on Friday night. The boys were clean with the ball and led at every change, up by 4 points at half time and 8 points at three-quarter time before kicking the first three goals of the last quarter to win the game. The backline played one on one footy and kept Villa goalless in the 2nd half, while the midfield was dominant all evening. The boys are happy with back to back wins and are looking forward to this week’s game against Padua.

Intermediates Year In wet conditions out at Coorparoo, the 8/9s started tenaciously against Villanova. It was not a night for pretty football and our Marist 8/9 players dug deep to try and force the ball forward against some bigger bodied opponents. Ned Rosenbrook was leading the way, ably helped by Knapp and Clements in the middle, plus out on the wings McClure and Tom Williams were busy, chasing and putting the ball to Marist advantage. Across half back it was again O’May reading the play and well supported by Harry Thomson and Jackson Williams. A few lapses in concentration deep in defence, allowing cheap goals was not indicative of how close the game was in many areas, but unfortunately, we were 4 goals down midway through the 2nd quarter. One of our very best players up to half time was year 8 Jack Thompson and he, unfortunately, was off for the rest of the game after suffering a broken nose while tackling in a pack. Brave Ollie Clements was also off for the rest of the game after suffering a jaw injury and concussion. Thus, the troops entered the last half down but not out, they kept on battling, playing the ball in true Marist spirit to the very end against stronger, bigger opponents. The end score was an 11 to 2 goal loss; however, the coaching staff were extremely proud of the resistance and sportsmanship displayed by all 8/9s players.”

Juniors – Year 7 Round five brought a challenging task to the table in the form of Villanova college. Usually one of the more dominant sides in the AFL competition the boys knew they were in for a tough one. Coming off a solid win against St Edmunds last round the boys had a lot of momentum behind them. Overall it was a good contest and the boys gave it all they had and as a result of such good effort the boys came out with a 39-14 victory. Once again, the boys dominated around the contest and were able to get first use of the footy ultimately resulting in numerous goal opportunities. Play of the game was the big Owen Hair putting on a massive tackle in our forward fifty in the third quarter, which enabled the boys to take possession and kick three goals clear. Special mentions to James Milner, Harry Hogan, Ethan Schultz, Oliver Reeves and Jake Caughley.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

6A An outstanding team performance. Today’s game saw the boys take 3 difficult catches and make two brilliant run outs. Very proud of the way they played together as a team.

6B In spite of last week’s loss to ATC, the boys showed enthusiasm and determination to make amends this week against Villanova. Bowling first and restricting Villa to 102, Toby McCormack (3-10 off 3) and Fletcher Murray (2-2 off 3) shone in a much-improved performance all round. Further, only losing 3 wickets with 7 batsmen retiring was extremely pleasing to see as Marist posted a final total of 136, highlighted by Fletcher Wessling (17 not out) and Fletcher Carlson (14 not out).

6C The 6Cs travelled out to Tingalpa to take on Villanova College. Losing the bat toss resulted in being sent out to field on a wet ground. We began the innings well, restricting Villa to 2/35 at the drinks break with extras slowly piling up. A couple of good shots and some big hitting by their last pair meant that they finished on a solid total of 3/85. Marist were never really in the game with slow scoring as well as tight bowling from Villa. Although the boys had a crack, Villa were too good winning by 34 runs after our innings was cut short due to time restrictions. Well done to all players.

6 Gold Win by forfeit

6 White In a tough defeat to a very good Iona team the boys remained positive throughout the game. The boys displayed great efforts of fielding with some close-run calls. Owen and Jackson gave hope with late partnership where they played some cracking shots.

6 Green The 6 Green team were defeated by a marginally better Villanova side last Saturday with Villa scoring 6/64 against MCA 6/43. With the bat Harry Zantiotis led the charge scoring 7, with Ethan Barbaro and Finlay Gardiner supporting his score with two runs apiece. In the field Mitchell McCormick dazzled the opposition taking two wickets in one over, with Finlay Gardiner taking a wicket and Will MacTaggart taking a brilliant catch in the field. The improvement in our team’s skills is noticeable from week to week as each of our lads steps up to the challenge. Keep up the good work fellas.

Marist College Ashgrove - The Buzz - Page 8 YEARS 5&6 CRICKET - ROUND 5 VS VILLANOVA COLLEGE - SATURDAY 7 MARCH

5A A disappointing result on the weekend for the 5A cricketers. The boys won the toss and sent Villa in on a damp outfield. Some great bowling from Josh Pope and Ethan Bird restricted a talented Villa batting line-up to 8/137. The wheels then fell off!! MCA were under early pressure at 4/0!! Great innings from Salem Tamer and Ethan Bird steadied the ship and gave the boys a glimmer of hope, but poor shot selection let the lower-order batters down and MCA were bundled out for 81. The boys live to fight another day and hope to rebound next week. 5B After winning the toss and bowling Marist had Villanova 5/50 at drinks. A clinical bowling performance after drinks saw Marist take 5/12 including Patrick Collins 2/2 off one over to take Villanova to 62 all out. A nervy start saw Marist slip to 3-9 but Reilly Keogh stepped up in some key partnerships to take Marist to their 3rd straight win. Well done boys. 5C After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, the 5Cs took early wickets before the Villa middle-order stabilised. Quick late innings wickets including Max McBride’s 3/2 allowed Marist to restrict Villa to 78. A strong start by the 5C openers was backed up by a solid middle-order performance; however, constant wickets saw the game go down to the wire with six runs being needed off the last two overs with two wickets in hand. After losing a wicket early in the over Max McBride came back out and steadied, getting Marist over the line with one wicket and six balls to spare. 5 Gold 5 Gold welcomed their first win of the season on Saturday when they defeated Villa 7/48 to 8/97. Team spirit was high with the boys cheering each other on. Well done to Callum Curtin and Tom Bedggood for some fancy fielding, and a special mention to Finley Nicholson who hit four 4s and took three wickets. 5 Blue The 5 Blue boys opened the bowling well, showing a great attitude to bowl 20 overs of pure class. They held the Iona boys to 60 runs. With some strong batting across the board, the Ashgrove boys made a personal best score of 74! Well done boys.

AROUND THE GROUNDS

6A It was a hard-fought game until the very end. The game began with a dominant first quarter by Marist that was unfortunately undone by some good play by the opponents in the 2nd quarter. This was to be the pattern for the game as Marist was in top in the 3rd but were unable to maintain the performance all the way through meaning that unfortunately it was a loss.

6B A strong effort from the 6Bs this week, kicking the first goal and leading at the quarter time break. However, it wasn’t to be as the strong Padua side we faced muscled their way back into what was a heavily contested contest. Unfortunately, the game got away from us towards the end, but the boys should be commended on their grit and drive to finish the game off against such a physical opposition. Look for a big turnaround next week from this gutsy group of young men. 5A Coming into this game the boys wanted to focus on attacking the footy. A very well-structured Iona side challenged us early on. The boys held to the challenge well in the first quarter but Iona eventually came out on top. Plenty of valuable football lessons can be taken from the weekend which we can build on. 5B This weekend, the 5B team were hoping to bounce back from a tough outing against Iona the week before. The match was a tight affair that ebbed and flowed throughout the first three quarters with only a couple of points separating the two teams. It was always going to come down to which team held their nerve in the last five minutes of the match and fortunately for the MCA boys, they managed to kick clear with a few minutes to go and close down possession to the Padua boys. A very nerve-wracking but exciting win for the boys.
