Padua Old Boys’ Newsletter ISSUE Spring/Summer 2014 “Where there is love and wisdom there is neither fear nor ignorance” St Francis of Assisi THINGS FRANCISCAN Dear Friends Never before has the concept of leadership been more important than it is to- day. We have seen leadership exercised in its different modes, by Pope Francis, and our politicians like Tony Abbott, Bill Shorten and Clive Palmer. The study of leadership has been a focus for our Year 11 students this year. The boys have been exposed to hierarchical, collaborative, consultative, and servant leadership models, as the boys prepared to take on leader- ship roles as 2015 Seniors. Mr. Ben Lowrie, Vice Rector (Pastoral Care) devised a program and a booklet the boys were to complete if they wanted to be Senior Leaders for next year. The applicants spoke to all the staff, and on Year 11 camp to their friends, about the qualities they had that would fit them for leadership responsibilities in a Franciscan school. Mr Out addressed the boys on the Year 11 Camp and pre- pared them for nominating among themselves those they thought would make suitable leaders. Finally, Mr Out choose the following boys as leaders in 2015: College Captain - Tom Fall. Vice-Captain - Jack Peoples House Leaders - Finbar Delbridge, Harrison Pankhurst, Oscar Baker, Michael Hinds, Matthew Hurley, Ryan Pitts, Ethan Figueiredo, Jacob Smith, Rhys Kelly, Zachary O'Donnell, Patrick Benstead, Michael O'Shea The other leaders caring for other aspects of College life are (Committees) - Jack Dickson, Zachary Hughes, Karl Garufi and Kyle Britto. Four of the boys had their fathers attend Padua! As 'Franciscans’ we all celebrate in a special way the birth of Jesus, as we recall Saint Francis building the first crib at Greccio.

This year we also welcomed Lachlan Williams into our 2018 T.A.C Cup Representatives coaching group. Lockie oversaw player development with a focus on developing Sandringham Dragons individual players’ areas for improvement. Declan McBean Term 1 highlights included the Year 10 James Harmes Squad tour to Canberra 2018 Vic Country Future Stars where they were narrowly defeated by Erindale College in Queanbeyan in game Representative 1 of a 2 game series against the ACT Champions. Jarryd Baker Our Premier League team were in a strong pool against Essendon-Kelior, Bendigo 2018 Dandenong Stingrays SSC and Catherine McAuley. All 3 games were hotly contested but saw Hallam lose U16 Representatives all of them by less than 20 points.

It consists of a Tau cross, crossed arms, motto and the word, "Padua". Wet weather continues to affect our training and given the Saturday 21 March weather interruptions this year it has certainly been an interesting season! Last weekend we had a AIC Round 7 Cricket, Volleyball weekend of mixed results against Villanova across all sports. The volleyballers continued their strong and AFL v Iona form, our AFL players continue to develop with the 1sts recording a good win, while some of our cricket AIC AFL – Years 5, 6 teams will be looking for a strong finish to the season after a disappointing round. and 7 v SPC and Iona Next week will be the final week for AFL, cricket and volleyball and we wish all students the best of luck for the remaining rounds of sport.

Welcome to the first edition of The Shamrock for 2012. The 2012 academic year has commenced with over 1340 boys enrolled at the College, including 76 boys resident within the boarding community. The College has leased the former Anglican Bishop’s Residence from the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-Operative in order to accommodate our growing boarding population. Enrolments for 2013 Year 7 have closed and places offered to 250 boys with further applicants awaiting a place. This strong demand is testament to the outstanding achievements of our boys in many fields of endeavour. The Academic Assembly, the first major assembly for the year, was held on February 10 and recognised the efforts of our high achievers from 2011. Other highlights of a busy term included the annual Music Camp as well as the Year 7 and 9 Camps and the Year 12 Retreats. The Jo Walter Field, known to old boys as St Roch’s Oval was blessed by Fr Brendan Davey on February 10. The newly refurbished Br W.T. O’Malley Wing and the Sir Hugh Devine Wing were blessed and opened by Bishop Peter Connors and Catherine King MP on March 28. St Patrick’s Day Mass was celebrated on Friday March 16.
