Padua Old Boys’ Newsletter ISSUE Spring/Summer 2014 “Where there is love and wisdom there is neither fear nor ignorance” St Francis of Assisi THINGS FRANCISCAN Dear Friends Never before has the concept of leadership been more important than it is to- day. We have seen leadership exercised in its different modes, by Pope Francis, and our politicians like Tony Abbott, Bill Shorten and Clive Palmer. The study of leadership has been a focus for our Year 11 students this year. The boys have been exposed to hierarchical, collaborative, consultative, and servant leadership models, as the boys prepared to take on leader- ship roles as 2015 Seniors. Mr. Ben Lowrie, Vice Rector (Pastoral Care) devised a program and a booklet the boys were to complete if they wanted to be Senior Leaders for next year. The applicants spoke to all the staff, and on Year 11 camp to their friends, about the qualities they had that would fit them for leadership responsibilities in a Franciscan school. Mr Out addressed the boys on the Year 11 Camp and pre- pared them for nominating among themselves those they thought would make suitable leaders. Finally, Mr Out choose the following boys as leaders in 2015: College Captain - Tom Fall. Vice-Captain - Jack Peoples House Leaders - Finbar Delbridge, Harrison Pankhurst, Oscar Baker, Michael Hinds, Matthew Hurley, Ryan Pitts, Ethan Figueiredo, Jacob Smith, Rhys Kelly, Zachary O'Donnell, Patrick Benstead, Michael O'Shea The other leaders caring for other aspects of College life are (Committees) - Jack Dickson, Zachary Hughes, Karl Garufi and Kyle Britto. Four of the boys had their fathers attend Padua! As 'Franciscans’ we all celebrate in a special way the birth of Jesus, as we recall Saint Francis building the first crib at Greccio. For him, and for us it is for us a time to remember that with the birth of Jesus, all of creation is divinised, made God-like. So it is, I wish you, in this holy sea- son, blessings of peace and joy and a 2015 full of all good things for your families. pace e bene Fr John Boyd-Boland Brisbane High School Design & Build Go Kart Challenge The Bulletin Mark Diviney Throughout the year a group of year 11 engineering students have worked hard to manufacture a Go Kart as a co curricula activity in preparation for the inaugural Brisbane High School Design & build Go Kart challenge at Arch- erfield. Last Monday, Team Padua journeyed to the track to test out their kart against the competition. Padua joined Marist Ashgrove, St Paul’s Bald Hills and Sandgate SHS on the starting grid. The Smith family organisation instigated the event to foster vocational interest in mechanical trades. The competition began with judgement of overall appearance and standard of construction of each of the karts. The judges were from TAFE and industry. Team Padua consisted of Shane Eshmade, Dom Burchill, Sam Maker, Tore Calabrese, Julian Trombetta and Billy McIntosh. The team spent some time getting used to the track before competition began. Team members raced against the clock to establish their fastest times over the day. All teams had work to do in the pits as various mechanical issues arose which had to be fixed to get the team back onto the track. Unfortunately Padua’s kart suffered from a repeated problem of throwing the chain later in the day requiring it to be re attached. In the end the time taken to try to find the problem cost Team Padua valuable track time. At the end of a very successful day, Ashgrove was announced as the overall winner with Padua finishing in third position. Many thanks to Mrs Eshmade who assisted greatly in providing transport for the team to and from the event. All schools involved are looking forward to being involved again in 2015 giving boys an opportunity to be involved in the Go Kart challenge. Special thanks to Mr Davissen for all of his organisation and enthusiasm in making the day so successful. Mark Diviney We are sorry! We sincerely apologise for the repeated emails which you have received from the College in recent times. We have experienced major glitches with our data base. We believe that this is rectified now. In 2010 changes were made to the Old Boys’ electronic da- tabase at the College. There were a number of issues with Important this and, in talking with some Old Boys, it seems that some names and details have been lost. It is important that the Information database is as accurate and comprehensive as possible to keep all Old Boys informed. If you are talking to any fellow Old Boys’ Old Boy, please ask them if they are still receiving emails Database notifying them of events and the Newsletters. If they re- ceived emails in years gone by and no longer receive emails, please encourage them to get in touch with the College by email, [email protected] or by telephone 07 3857 9999 or to change their details via the new website. 2014 Sportsman’s Dinner Many things differ from the humble beginnings of mice races in the long-gone communi- cations centre with an unders and overs table to the suit and tie silver service styled Cal- cutta of the Tattersall’s Club, however, the most essential elements remain the same. The brotherhood and connection that makes Padua College not just a school, but a communi- ty is seen every year at this annual event. The guest speakers have always entertained, the jokes have always been in good spirit and have been free flowing (even though they are often directed at the same men!) Greg McLean’s dress sense has always been hor- rendous and for a long time, the chicken breast/lamb shank dinner was a consistent talk- ing point of the Old Boys’ Sportsman’s Dinner. As an Old Boy of the College, it is rewarding to give something back to a process that al- lowed my mates and me touring privileges on the Confraternity Shield when we were here. The raffles and fundraisers have changed and the waiters may no longer be Year 12 students, but the atmosphere, generosity and genuine appreciation for a worthwhile cause remains consistent. This year’s was no different with Gary Belcher and Kevin Walters entertaining us with great anecdotes and folklores of a yesteryear in Queensland Rugby League, as well as providing insightful and pertinent messages for the future. As an annual event, it is always something that the gentleman of Padua look forward to and a huge thanks must go to the ladies and gents that organise such a terrific event. Chris Yeo (OB 1999) Where are they now? Jamie Young OB 2000 Dan Cull (Grigg House Guardian) & Jamie Young Recent visit to the College October 2014 Having grown up in Australia, he attended Padua College, where he played in the First XI as Goalkeeper and also played at Albany Creek at club level. Young moved to England in 2002 to play professional football for Reading. After failing to break into the first team, he was released by Reading on 8 May 2006, and subsequent- ly signed a one-year deal with Wycombe Wanderers on 2 August 2006. He missed much of the 2007–08 season with a knee injury, but regained fitness by the end of the season.[2] His contract was cancelled by mutual consent in January 2010 after he was informed that he would not be offered a new contract in the summer. He was signed on a non-contract basis by Aldershot Town of League Two on 11 March 2010 as cover for goalkeeper Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz.[3] After impressing and establishing himself as the first choice goalkeeper, in the last quarter of the 2009–10 sea- son, where Aldershot Town qualified for the League Two play-offs, Young signed a one-year contract with the club in June 2010. With the arrival of new goalkeeper Ross Worner in the 2011–12 season, Young was demoted to second choice goalkeeper but still managed to make a number of appearances in the later stage of the sea- son when Worner was ruled out with a back injury. On 24 June 2012, Young signed a one-year contract to keep him with Aldershot until 2013.[4] Young left Aldershot in June 2013 after the club were relegated from the Football League and placed in admin- istration.[5] He played on game for Basingstoke Town in September as cover for their regular goalkeeper before joining fellow Conference South side Whitehawk the following month.[6][7] After making only one appearance he moved again, this time joining Hayes & Yeading United.[8] After making 10 appearances for Hayes & Yeading during its 2013–14 Conference South campaign, Young was released by manager Phil Babb following an on- field altercation with a team-mate in a 2–0 defeat to Bath City.[9][10] On 10 May 2014, it was reported that Young would return to his hometown to join A-League defending champi- on Brisbane Roar for the 2014–15 season.[11] Wikipedia Oct 2014 Congratulations To Brady Foster (OB 2006) who finished second in AFL Reality TV competition ‘the Recruit’ Congratulations to our very own Harris Andrews (Yr 12) who has just been drafted into the Brisbane Lions to play full time professional AFL next year! Harris has been a member of the the Hyundai Brisbane Lions Academy from which he has been given the opportuni- ty to grow as a player and a future talent of the game. Harris accepted the draft pick after some very keen in- terest from several other AFL clubs in Melbourne.
