Hallam Senior College Sports Academy: 2018 Highlights & Honour Rolls

2018 Highlights

Boys Program 2018 saw some notable win for the Hallam Basketball Academy’s senior 1st team. Bringing up some strong youth from the intermediates, the young team managed to end their year with 9 wins and 7 losses to date. Notable wins over Templestowe, St Monicas, Rowville 2nd team and College saw the HBA boys make it to the final game of each of their tournaments and fall short to the likes of Maribrynong, Box hill and Wesley College. Development of the skills, tactics and fitness of each player has been a huge focus for the year and has led to the team being prepared to enter their toughest challenge of Nationals at the end of the year once more. With such a strong core group in the Intermediate program already having some senior playing experience, the heights of potential for the HBA team in the next few years is unquestionably exciting. Well done, on what was a successful year gentlemen and good luck for the Nationals competition.

Girls Program Overall 2018 was in many people’s opinions the most successful year ever for the Hallam Girls Basketball Academy. Landing some strong inclusions into the program at the beginning of the year, the girls had to take a step up in their training and focus levels if they were to reach their potential. After some tough tournaments early in the year where the team were unable to get their structures clicking, they began hitting their strides at the right time of the year. Coming into the SSV competition (our main goal each year) the girls out played their opposition in each game apart from the final at the Casey North opening round. Berwick managed to defeat Hallam by a mere 6 points however played an ineligible player and this saw Hallam enter the next round of competition. With something to prove, the girls outlasted Parkdale in a pre metro round elimination game and then went on to win 3 straight close encounters to become the Southern Metro region winners and book a spot in the State Finals for the first time in at least 8 years (if not longer)! At the State finals, Hallam managed to win 2 impressive game early and then faced Box Hill for a spot in the Grand Final vs. Maribrynong. The last time Hallam faced Box Hill in girl’s competition, the scores were a massive 10 – 80 point loss, however this time around, with box hill out to an early lead, the girls were determined to not suffer the same fate. Scoring 9 straight points in the start of the second half, Hallam brought the game back to a single figure margin. Unfortunately, the HBA zone allowed Box Hill to light it up from beyond the 3-point line and Box Hill went onto the State Grand Final. Well done to the 2018 HBA girls on making history and solidifying that in 2019, with hard work, they will go one step further!

Hallam Senior College Sports Academy: 2018 Highlights & Honour Rolls Rugby League ACADEMY

2018 Highlights 2018 saw the first year of the female Rugby League program. The year started off with 11 girls and soon extended to 13 with some other additions on match days when needed. In addition to the female program we also had the unusual circumstance of having to train off site due to the grounds being upgraded this year. This took a real toll on our training times with travel to and from Doveton. The students need to be congratulated for their great attendance in this difficult time.

Term 1 included the regular pre-season focus at training of skills and conditioning but finishing with NRL 9’s and Touch Football. Our successes included the Senior Girls progress through to the state finals undefeated in the South East. The same went for our U16 boys and Senior Boys. In fact, our Senior boys had 2 teams and we finished 1st and 2nd on the South East qualifying day.

For Touch Football we had to enter the Western region competition day. Unfortunately, the South East Day fell on the same date as our curriculum day. We entered 3 Senior Boys teams and 1 Senior Girls Team into this day which included private schools. Our 1sts team came away winning the day in division 1 beating Mount Ridley Secondary College in the final during extra time.

Term 2 involved the finals of the NRL 9’s and the start of Senior Boys Rugby League competitions. For the NRL 9’s state finals day we had a Senior Boys team, Senior Gils team and U16’s boys team. The Senior Girls came away winning and being named state champions for the 3rd year in a row which is a massive achievement. The Senior boys came 3rd narrowly losing in the semi-finals with a developing group of players. Our U16’s played very well early in the day but injuries hampered their ability to progress to the end of the day with a small group of available players.

The NRL Schoolboy Cup had us in a pool with Farrer MAHS from Tamworth, Erindale College in Canberra and Victoria University Secondary College. Our round 1 match against Farrer away in Tamworth built up a lot of hype within the senior playing group. This 2 day trip gave a wonderful experience for our boys. We had an early lead in this game leading 10-6 but ended up losing 26-14 in front of a big home town crowd. We received wonderful feedback from our opposition and the locals after the match. We then played Erindale College in Canberra doing a 1 day trip. This game didn’t go to plan and we learnt a huge lesson losing 34-0. We then played Victoria University SC on AMMI Park and the match was recorded on Foxtel. Victoria University came into this match beating Erindale and narrowly losing to Farrer so we went in as underdogs. We ended up playing with the intensity we were searching for all year. With the addition of Pita Purcell back at the school we took out this game 28-22 with a late charge from our opponents. The pool results meant Farrer progressed through to the quarter finals and the other 3 schools with 1 win each.

For the 2nd division we entered a team into the NRL Schoolboy trophy knowing that we couldn’t progress. On this day our development squad were able to win the day beating Narre Warren P-12 in the final.

In term 3, our under 16’s began the Cooper Cronk Shield campaign. They were very well organized and played extremely well at Casey Fields winning the South East Qualifying day. Unfortunately, due to injuries from weekend Rugby League and representative commitments, they weren’t able to field a team for the state finals and had to withdraw. However, the signs from elements of this group are very promising for the future.

Hallam Senior College Sports Academy: 2018 Highlights & Honour Rolls We ended the year with the Storm Cup where we played an initial round 2018 Honour Roll game against Mount Ridley SC at Fregon Reserve, Clayton. This was a very close encounter with a team of U16’s and Seniors mixed together and our opposition Male Rugby League had a similar set up. We came away with a win in a very tightly contested match NRL Victoria Thunderbolts Junior which ebbed and flowed all game. Unfortunately, the final of this competition never Representative 18’s occurred due to Mount Ridley having a national final at the NRL Schoolboy trophy Adidis Karora, Jared Nauma, RJ Roma, level and the inability to get a suitable venue late in term 3.
