2017 Sport & Recreation Booklet Introduction St Laurence’s College provides a broad range of sporting and recreational activities. This booklet provides information for those wishing to participate in the College sports program. This is your invitation to join the College community in sporting and recreational endeavours.

These activities provide for the personal growth of the students by developing individual skill, teamwork, leadership, mateship, understanding and self discipline in an atmosphere of fun and enjoyment. This in turn benefits curriculum performance and school behaviour and helps build a real sense of community.

The College competes in the AIC sporting competition with other schools as outlined below.

The College offers competitions ranging from the Year 5’s to the Open division. Each year the Open teams are involved in the Christian Brothers’ Cricket Week. Biannually the school sends a Secondary development squad on a tour to England.

Swimming is competitive in the Primary and Secondary at St Laurence’s College. The College has an annual Age Championships and competes in AIC invitational carnivals. The season culminates with the AIC Swimming Championships.

Teams After a number of lead up meets the AIC team will be selected for the AIC championships.

Volleyball is a growing sport and is played in the secondary school. St Laurence’s new Sports Centre has four indoor courts with a gallery for viewers. The College is a leading school in our Association for Volleyball. A biennial tour is held with previous squads touring China (2009), Europe (2011), South America (2013) and Europe (2015). In 2017 the Volleyball tour will be to the USA.

Boys play football in Primary and Secondary age groups in the AIC competition. The College enters teams in a number of knock out competitions including the ISSA Cup (14A’s) and Uhlsport Cup (1st XI). The College has been aggregate champions of the AIC competition from 2012 - 2016.

Rugby has a long tradition at the College in both Secondary and Primary. Rugby is the largest participation sport at the College. Many old boys have been selected in Queensland and Australian teams.

Cross Country runners in both the Primary and Secondary compete in a number of AIC invitation meets. The season culminates in the AIC Cross Country Championships. Cross Country training in the morning is also quite popular with players looking to develop their aerobic fitness for other school sports and staff wishing to improve their general fitness.

The College’s Tennis program is conducted at the Griffith Tennis Centre. The St Laurence’s College program is assisted by expert coaches from the Pure Tennis Academy. The College’s tennis program continues to improve each year. In 2016 SLC achieved 2nd place in the AIC aggregate.

The season culminates in the AIC Athletics Championships. The College also holds an annual College Athletics Day at Runcorn on the Exhibition Wednesday Holiday - a popular family day.

2017 is the first year of the AIC Primary school AFL competition. The College will enter The College will field Open, Year 7, 8, 9 and Year 5, 6 teams in the Queensland All Schools AFL Competition.

Weightlifting

St Laurence’s has a strong tradition in weightlifting. During the course of the year, students are given the opportunity to develop the correct techniques for this technical sport. Assisting with coaching the program is Olympian Old Boy Mr Damon Kelly.

Cycling

Formed in 2012, St Laurence’s College Cycling already has over 50 riders and is open to all members of the college community, from students in Years 5 to 12, their families and staff.St Laurence’s College Cycling promotes a healthy lifestyle while raising money to support various charities through rides such as the ‘Brissie to Bay’ and ‘Brisbane to Gold Coast’. The events cater for all abilities and are about participation rather than competition.

Membership is free and entitles you to discounts from a local bicycle store, involvement in bicycle workshops and tours.

Excellence Program (Sport) Selection Criteria and Application Process The Excellence Program (Sport) at St Laurence’s College aims to ensure elite athletes within the College achieve to their academic and sporting potential.

Athletes in the program are supported by an Excellence Program coordinator who assists with the management of athletes in balancing their academic, training and competition commitments.

Application Process Students wishing to apply for the program must complete a Talented Athlete Special Provision Request Form and take part in an interview with the athlete’s parents, Excellence Program - Sport Program Coordinator and the Dean of Studies.
