    Katyn massacre This article is about the 1940 massacre of Polish officers The Katyn massacre, also known as the Katyn Forest massacre (Polish: zbrodnia katyńska, 'Katyń crime'), was a mass murder of thousands of Polish military officers, policemen, intellectuals and civilian prisoners of war by Soviet NKVD, based on a proposal from Lavrentiy Beria to execute all members of the Polish Officer Corps. Dated March 5, 1940, this official document was then approved (signed) by the entire Soviet Politburo including Joseph Stalin and Beria. The number of victims is estimated at about 22,000, the most commonly cited number being 21,768. The victims were murdered in the Katyn Forest in Russia, the Kalinin (Tver) and Kharkov prisons and elsewhere. About 8,000 were officers taken prisoner during the 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland, the rest being Poles arrested for allegedly being "intelligence agents, gendarmes, saboteurs, landowners, factory owners, lawyers, priests, and officials." Since Poland's conscription system required every unexempted university graduate to become a reserve officer, the Soviets were able to round up much of the Polish intelligentsia, and the Jewish, Ukrainian, Georgian and Belarusian intelligentsia of Polish citizenship. The "Katyn massacre" refers to the massacre at Katyn Forest, near Katyn-Kharkiv-Mednoye the villages of Katyn and Gnezdovo (ca. 19 km west of Smolensk, memorial Russia), of Polish military officers in the Kozelsk prisoner-of-war camp. This was the largest of the simultaneous executions of prisoners of war from geographically distant Starobelsk and Ostashkov camps, and the executions of political prisoners from West Belarus and West Ukraine, shot on Stalin's orders at Katyn Forest, at the NKVD headquarters in Smolensk, at a Smolensk slaughterhouse, and at prisons in Kalinin (Tver), Kharkov, Moscow, and other Soviet cities.

ZATRZYMAMY? – WIERZĘ JAK W BOGA, ŻE TU SIĘ SKOŃCZĄ!” * a burzliwa i gwałtowna wojna – rzutująca przecież na cały późniejszy geopolityczny układ sił w Europie – nie została do- mknięta. Wroga pobito, ale dobić go wówczas było nie sposób. Rację miała nasza młodość – pisał w euforii poeta Kazimierz TWierzyński, wspominając narodowe poczucie tryumfu na widok pochodu sowieckich jeńców. Ten świadek polskiej victorii 1920 r. o sobie i współczesnych mówi wtedy jako o „pokoleniu szczęśliwym”, wywodzącym się z narodu, któremu reszta świata coś zawdzięcza. FOT. CEZARY POMYKAŁO FOT. Nie minie jednak kilka lat i w ocalonej przed bolszewikami Europie, która przyglądała się ciekawie tej wojnie, być może nie do końca rozumiejąc jej znaczenie, niewygodna okaże się pamięć, że to właśnie polski żołnierz był w roku dwudziestym emanacją zachodniego świata. I że to na płonącej polskiej scenie tego teatru wojny dopalała się czerwona pożoga. Zmagania Wojska Polskiego z Armią Czerwoną odbywały się na różnych poziomach – było to przede wszystkim starcie militarne, głównie niezawodnej w polu kawalerii, która po obu stronach do- wiodła swej skuteczności i mobilności. Świadome swych racji wojsko zwarło się w śmiertelnym uści- sku w imię różnych wizji świata: tradycji opartej na chrześcijańskich wartościach i chaosu oszalałej rewolucji prowadzącej do totalitaryzmu. Była to wojna o duszę. Wojna przywódców. Wojna oficerów. Wojna żołnierzy. Wojna młodzieży. Wojna wywiadów, w której rozbiliśmy bank i dzięki nam sowiecki nasłuch radiowy zamiast wymiany informacji mógł przez kluczowe 36 godzin nauczyć się na pamięć Ewangelii św.

Flaga fladze dodaje odwagi: - No, no, nie bądź taka zmartwiona. Nie pomogą i moce piekła: jam ciebie, tyś mnie urzekła, nie zmogą cię bombą ni złotem i na zawsze zachowasz swą cnotę. I nigdy nie będziesz biała, i nigdy nie będziesz czerwona, zostaniesz biało-czerwona jak wielka zorza szalona, czerwona jak puchar wina, biała jak śnieżna lawina, najukochańsza, najmilsza, biało-czerwona. Tak mówiły do siebie flagi i raz po raz strzelił karabin, zrobił dziurę w czerwieni i w bieli. Lecz wołały flagi: - Nie płaczcie! Choćby jeden strzępek na maszcie, nikt się zmienić barw nie ośmieli. Zostaniemy biało-czerwone, flagi święte, flagi szalona, nie spoczniemy biało-czerwone, czerwone jak puchar wina, białe jak śnieżna lawina, biało-czerwone. O północy przy zielonych stolikach modliły się diabły do cyfr. Były szarfy i ordery, i muzyka i stukał tajny szyfr. DIABŁY W SERCU SWOIM GŁUPIM, BO NIEDOBRYM ROZWIĄZYWAŁY BIAŁO-CZERWONY PROBLEM.

As long as there’s water in the Baltic, you will be the Polish sea, as you’ll lead to the blossoming of Polish people’s golden dreams” Hymn to the Baltic (excerpt) Abstract This article presents the history of Maritime and River League (Liga Morska i Rzeczna) during 99 years of its activity to promote the idea of the Maritime Poland. The goal of this organisation is to spur general development, which is achieved by developing the principles of organisation of ports, shipping, universal maritime terminology, the development of shipping, the construction of the wa­ terway system in Poland, the training of personnel and the promotion of the essence of shipping and maritime sports among Polish population. Moreover, this article describes the various types of activ­ ities of Maritime and River League, such as launching publications related to the issues of the sea, creating plans for the construction of the port of Gdynia and Naval Yard and the expansion of the city of Gdynia, collecting money for the construction of ships and propaganda campaigns. The arti­ cle describes also the relation between the activity of Maritime and River League and the expansion of Polish Navy. The conclusion of this article refers to an exhibition organised by the Library of the Naval Academy in Gdynia which will be touring Poland for the next two years.
