The study builds upon research that has highlighted the growing importance of social media in the transmission of radical right, nationalist and anti-immigration political discourse, and to the central role of these media in the gradual normalisation of such discourse. Moreover, the study acknowledges the potential – indicated by previous research – of political blogs to function as tools for voter persuasion and mobilisation. The study aims to contribute with insights on how social psychological dynamics such as self-presentation, identity-constructions, discursive divisions between ‘ingroups’ and ‘outgroups’, strategies of persuasion, and appeals to emotions and nostalgic memories are involved in these processes. The dissertation examines blog-entries by members of the populist radical right parties the Finns Party (Perussuomalaiset) in Finland and the Sweden Democrats (Sverigedemokraterna) in Sweden during 2007-2015.

  • State of Populism in Europe
2018 State of Populism in Europe The past few years have seen a surge in the public support of populist, Eurosceptical and radical parties throughout almost the entire European Union. In several countries, their popularity matches or even exceeds the level of public support of the centre-left. Even though the centre-left parties, think tanks and researchers are aware of this challenge, there is still more OF POPULISM IN EUROPE – 2018 STATE that could be done in this fi eld. There is occasional research on individual populist parties in some countries, but there is no regular overview – updated every year – how the popularity of populist parties changes in the EU Member States, where new parties appear and old ones disappear. That is the reason why FEPS and Policy Solutions have launched this series of yearbooks, entitled “State of Populism in Europe”. *** FEPS is the fi rst progressive political foundation established at the European level. Created in 2007 and co-fi nanced by the European Parliament, it aims at establishing an intellectual crossroad between social democracy and the European project. Policy Solutions is a progressive political research institute based in Budapest. Among the pre-eminent areas of its research are the investigation of how the quality of democracy evolves, the analysis of factors driving populism, and election research. 10th January 2018 Dear Dr. Birch, GAP President and GAP Executive Committee, APPLICATION FOR GAP MEMBERSHIP We, the organisations listed below, hereby submit our formal request for the General Assembly of Partners, in accordance with its Constitution and Bylaws, to consider our application for the creation of a Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Partner Constituent Group. Millions of LGBTI people live in cities across the world, often migrating to urban areas in search of tolerant and progressive communities. Yet LGBTI people in urban areas continue to face violence and discrimination on the basis of their real or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or intersex status (SOGIESC). As a result many LGBTI people living in cities and other urban areas are excluded from essential service provision including health and education services and disproportionately represented in statistics measuring homelessness. The New Urban Agenda clearly calls for cities that eliminate all forms of discrimination and are just, safe, healthy, accessible and resilient for all. This cannot be achieved without the inclusion of LGBTI people. Civil society is determined to embrace the progressive opportunities that cities provide to address the challenges LGBTI people face and deliver on the commitments made in the New Urban Agenda. We recognise the General Assembly of Partners as a self organised coalition of civil society organisations that has helped secure the inclusion of traditionally excluded and marginalised groups and their concerns in the New Urban Agenda and UN Habitat activities. This joint application comes from broad and representative organisations and activists based in the US, UK, Lebanon, India, Russia, Canada, Tanzania, Finland, Ecuador and Turkey that work at the global level, engaging with United Nations processes, as well as at the local level, with LGBTI individuals and communities in cities across the world.

  • Law and Order Do Not Always Go Together. Vigilantism As Citizens Attempt to Enforce Order Outside the Law Is Rising
“Law and order do not always go together. Vigilantism as citizens attempt to enforce order outside the law is rising. Comprehensive studies about the phe- nomenon have been lacking. The 17 case studies and the conceptual and com- parative discussion by the editors go a long way to fill the void. A must read in these times of rising populism and xenophobia.” - Prof. em. Alex P. Schmid, Editor-in-Chief of ‘Perspectives on Terrorism’ and former Officer-in-Charge of the Terrorism Prevention Branch of UNODC. “Theoretically astute, empirically sound, this volume is the authoritative source on the growing phenomena of vigilantism around the world. This study is essential reading for anyone who is interested in understanding the changing nature of coercion, and the shifting relations of social and political order in the 21st century.” - James Sheptycki, York University, Canada. “Vigilantism poses a serious threat to democracy. It is therefore an important, yet understudied phenomenon in criminology. This edited volume raises important issues regarding the conditions under which different kinds of vigilantism emerge. Using case studies from different countries, this edited volume provides challenging new insights which are of importance to both academics and policy makers.” - Prof. Lieven Pauwels, Ghent University, Belgium. “This book is richly researched and extremely timely. The spread of vigilantism in our increasingly fractured world should stimulate debate about the nature and significance of state power, whether ‘private’ vigilante actors are in fact detached from their governments, and when right-wing vigilantism becomes a necessary component of state Fascist operations.” - Prof. Martha K. Huggins, Tulane University (emerita), USA.

According to the Act on Equality between Women and Men, each authority must plan their operations to mainstream the gender perspective. Mainstreaming requires development of the administration’s ways of operation and a review of con- tents from a gender perspective. Its purpose is to bend the gender-neutral, even gender-blind, procedures and cultures. The handbook prepared by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health is intended for use in support of the ministries’ gender equality work. It com- piles best practices and methods for gender mainstreaming. It guides civil servants in the application of the gender perspective and gives tips on how to initiate the work of the ministries’ working groups for gender equality.
