This article argues for the understanding of ‘utopia’ as a cultural marker whose appearance in history is functional to the a posteriori chronologization (or typification) of historical time. I develop this argument via a comparative analysis of utopia between China and Europe. Utopia is a marker of modernity: the coinage of the word wutuobang (‘utopia’) in Chinese around is analogous and complementary to More’s invention of Utopia in ,inthatbothrepresent attempts at the conceptualizations of displaced imaginaries, encounters with radical forms of otherness – the European ‘discovery’ of the ‘New World’ during the Renaissance on the one hand, and early modern China’sown‘Westphalian’ refashioning on the other. In fact, a steady stream of utopian con- jecturing seems to mark the latter: from the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom borne out of the Opium wars, via the utopian tendencies of late Qing fiction in the works of literati such as Li Ruzhen, Biheguan Zhuren, Lu Shi’e, Wu Jianren, Xiaoran Yusheng, and Xu Zhiyan, to the reformer Kang Youwei’s monumental treatise Datong shu. -

I argue that the fluidity of satiric writing in the 1930s and 1940s undermines the certainties of the “satiric triangle” and gives rise to what I call, variously, self-satire, self-counteractive satire, empathetic satire and ambiguous satire. It has been standard in the study of satire to assume fixed and fairly stable relations among satirist, reader, and satirized object. This “satiric triangle” highlights the opposition of satirist and satirized object and has generally assumed an alignment by the reader with the satirist and the satirist’s judgments of the satirized object. Literary critics and theorists have usually shared these assumptions about the basis of satire. I argue, however, that beginning with late-Qing exposé fiction, satire in modern Chinese literature has shown an unprecedented uncertainty and fluidity in the relations among satirist, reader and satirized object. -

Shanghai and the Chinese Utopia in the Early 20Th Century As Presented in “The New Story of the Stone”
World Literature Studies 2 . vol. 13 . 2021 (19 – 32) ŠTÚDIE / ARTIclEs shanghai and the chinese utopia in the early 20th century as presented in “the new story of the stone” YiPinG WANG – PinG zHu DOI: https://doi.org/10.31577/WLS.2021.13.2.2 The novel The New Story of the Stone (新石头记, Xinshitouji [1908] 2016) by Wu Jianren (1866–1910) is one of the most representative utopian works of the late Qing dynasty (1840–1912) at which time China saw unprecedented fundamental social changes. After 1840, China underwent violent internal and external politi- cal, economic and military upheavals, and the late Qing government went through a series of major crises and reforms: the two Opium Wars (1840, 1856), the signing of the Treaty of Nanking (1842), the Taiping Rebellion (1850–1864), the Westerniza- tion Movement (1861), the Sino-French War (1883–1885), the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895, the Hundred Days’ Reform of 1898, the Boxer Movement (1900), and many more. Eventually, in 1912, the Qing Dynasty collapsed as the last Chinese dynasty and the Republic of China came into being, ushering in a new era in China. In this period, “the Chinese intellectual framework seemed suddenly inadequate and incompatible with modern global politics” (Isaacson 2017, 9), and the Chinese intel- ligentsia had to look to the outside and the future for further and wider explorations. The New Story of the Stone came out first in a series in The Southern Gazette (南方 报, Nanfang bao) in 1905 and was published in a single volume in 1908, rightfully serving as a reflection of the radical changes of a period that linked the past as well as the future. -

Together with an examination of the various individual qualities manifested in their poetry, this study includes related historical background, biographical information and a discussion of the aspirations and cultural life of the female clergy. Unlike some of the previous scholarship that has examined Daoist deities and mythical figures described in hagiographical texts and literary creations, or on topics such as the Divine Mother of the West and miscellaneous goddesses and fairies, this work takes the perspective of examining female Daoists as historical persons who lived in real Daoist convents. As such, this work concentrates on the assorted images of female Daoists presented in their own poetic works, including those of Yu Xuanji, Li Ye, Yuan Chun, Cao Wenyi and Sun Bu-er. Furthermore, this thesis also examines poetic works about female Daoists written by male literati from both inside and outside the Daoist religion. I do this in order to illustrate how elite men, the group with whom female Daoists interacted most frequently, appreciated and portrayed these special women and their poetry. I believe that a study of their works on Daoist women will not only allow us a better understanding of the nature and characters of female Daoists, but will also contribute to our knowledge of intellectual life in Tang and Song society. -

I argue that by adapting the well-known patriotic story of General Yue Fei in Chinese history, Zhou Yingfang suggests new directions in grand historical narrative in her own voice and from her own perspective. Negotiating the writing conventions of earlier legends, she turns the stereotyped masculine image of Yue Fei into a hero in both public and domestic settings. -

Analyzing the imagination of the spaces such as “museum” and “submarine” in the novel, this thesis explores the author Wu Jianren’s attitude toward China and the West, Chinese traditional culture and modernity at the turn of twentieth century.
