I argue that the fluidity of satiric writing in the 1930s and 1940s undermines the certainties of the “satiric triangle” and gives rise to what I call, variously, self-satire, self-counteractive satire, empathetic satire and ambiguous satire. It has been standard in the study of satire to assume fixed and fairly stable relations among satirist, reader, and satirized object. This “satiric triangle” highlights the opposition of satirist and satirized object and has generally assumed an alignment by the reader with the satirist and the satirist’s judgments of the satirized object. Literary critics and theorists have usually shared these assumptions about the basis of satire. I argue, however, that beginning with late-Qing exposé fiction, satire in modern Chinese literature has shown an unprecedented uncertainty and fluidity in the relations among satirist, reader and satirized object. -
The Late Qing's Other Utopias: China's Science-Fictional
Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 34.2 September 2008: 37-61 The Late Qing’s Other Utopias: China’s Science-Fictional Imagination, 1900-1910 Dun Wang Chinese Department Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou Abstract This research paper examines the genesis and mechanism of China’s imagination of the future at the turn of the 20th century, a time when the country’s current socio-political reality was seen as being in many ways abominable, while the future was seen as a utopian dreamland of possibility and hope. An analysis of Wu Jianren’s the late Qing fiction The New Story of the Stone (1905), especially its second half which depicts the future China as a “Civilized Realm” (文明境界), shows the influence on the young Chinese writers of contemporary Western science fiction and (especially) utopian fiction. It also shows that these late Qing writers wanted to portray their imagined China of the future as being “better” than the contemporary West (and also future West of Western utopian narratives) inasmuch as it will be using (originally Western) technology in a manner which is fundamentally moral and spiritual, as befits China’s traditional culture. Here the key contrast is between, on the one hand, ancient (Confucian, Daoist) Chinese civilization, moral idealism and spirituality, and on the other hand (contemporary and future) Western barbarism, empiricism, materialism, pragmatism, a “non- humanism” which seems to ignore moral and spiritual life. The author points out that Wu Jianren (吳趼人)’s future Chinese Civilized Realm has turned Western technology (the X-ray machine) into a “spiritual technology” (the Moral Nature Inspection Lens) which justifies China’s own cultural and philosophical past while simultaneously placing this past in a distant future which seems to go even “beyond” the one imagined by Western writers. -

Shanghai and the Chinese Utopia in the Early 20Th Century As Presented in “The New Story of the Stone”
World Literature Studies 2 . vol. 13 . 2021 (19 – 32) ŠTÚDIE / ARTIclEs shanghai and the chinese utopia in the early 20th century as presented in “the new story of the stone” YiPinG WANG – PinG zHu DOI: https://doi.org/10.31577/WLS.2021.13.2.2 The novel The New Story of the Stone (新石头记, Xinshitouji [1908] 2016) by Wu Jianren (1866–1910) is one of the most representative utopian works of the late Qing dynasty (1840–1912) at which time China saw unprecedented fundamental social changes. After 1840, China underwent violent internal and external politi- cal, economic and military upheavals, and the late Qing government went through a series of major crises and reforms: the two Opium Wars (1840, 1856), the signing of the Treaty of Nanking (1842), the Taiping Rebellion (1850–1864), the Westerniza- tion Movement (1861), the Sino-French War (1883–1885), the First Sino-Japanese War of 1894–1895, the Hundred Days’ Reform of 1898, the Boxer Movement (1900), and many more. Eventually, in 1912, the Qing Dynasty collapsed as the last Chinese dynasty and the Republic of China came into being, ushering in a new era in China. In this period, “the Chinese intellectual framework seemed suddenly inadequate and incompatible with modern global politics” (Isaacson 2017, 9), and the Chinese intel- ligentsia had to look to the outside and the future for further and wider explorations. The New Story of the Stone came out first in a series in The Southern Gazette (南方 报, Nanfang bao) in 1905 and was published in a single volume in 1908, rightfully serving as a reflection of the radical changes of a period that linked the past as well as the future. -

Analyzing the imagination of the spaces such as “museum” and “submarine” in the novel, this thesis explores the author Wu Jianren’s attitude toward China and the West, Chinese traditional culture and modernity at the turn of twentieth century. The thesis examines Chinese language fictionpublished in the three earliest Australian Chinese language newspapers from 1894 to 1912, when Australian Chinese diaspora experienced an initial plethora of urban cultural development. Through the thesis, I propose to show the incipient evolution of Australian Chinese language fictionand argue that the beginning of Chinese Australian writing should be redefined to the turn of the 20th century given its original and exemplary contribution to the development of a diasporic literary tradition in Australia. During these years, Australian Chinese language fictionevolved froma production largely derivative of the classical Chinese narrative tradition, to a modern and localised form through the influence and inspiration of the late Qing revolution in fiction. -

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Vocabularies of Violence: The Chinese Coolie Trade and the Constitutive Power of its Conceptual Vocabularies, 1847-1907 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Languages and Cultures by Elizabeth Evans Weber 2015 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Vocabularies of Violence: The Chinese Coolie Trade and the Constitutive Power of its Conceptual Vocabularies, 1847-1907 by Elizabeth Evans Weber Doctor of Philosophy in Asian Languages and Cultures University of California, Los Angeles, 2015 Professor Shu-mei Shih, Chair This project is concerned with the foreign-executed trade in contracted Chinese labor (the “coolie trade”) to the Americas that spanned from 1847-1876. The first part of the project explores the many violences that the coolie trade visited upon Chinese persons, whether those who were themselves directly victimized by the trade, or those who suffered more indirectly (persons whose families were torn apart, who lived in fear of kidnapping, or who were forced to contemplate the meaning of foreign-imposed racial hierarchies, commodification of racialized Chinese labor, and the general decline of late Qing China’s geopolitical position). As Chinese from a variety of backgrounds began to respond to and apprehend these traumatic violences, they gave rise to a set of “conceptual vocabularies”— including terminologies, subjectivities, conceptions of racial and geopolitical hierarchies, and understandings of servitude and personal liberty—that gave voice both to the ongoing traumas, and to the shock and simmering outrage that resulted therefrom. ii The second part of the project then details how nationalist authors writing in the early twentieth century were able to repurpose and manipulate these powerful, already-extant, shared vocabularies of violence in order to urge a crystallizing reading public to take an interest in the future of an endangered China. -

1 Breaking into Laughter ⣙䪹 In 1903, Wu Jianren, one of the most innovative and prolifi c Chinese writers of the early twentieth century, began serializing two works in the same issue of Yo- kohama’s New Fiction, a leading literary journal of Chinese reformers in exile. Th e fi rst, a novel, he entitled A History of Pain; the second, a series of jokes, he called A New History of Laughter.1 Th ese two titles appeared at a moment when China’s future was unclear. Th e Qing court was still reeling from an 1895 defeat in the Sino- Japanese War, an aborted reform movement in 1898, and, close on its heels, the Boxer Rebellion. Wu was among a group of educated men who might once have sought a position in the government bureaucracy but were now turning to literary and entrepreneur- ial pursuits for a living. In expressing their emotional state, many of these writers put anguish front and center. A History of Pain appeared at the front of the jour- nal and A New History of Laughter at the back. Th en there is the novel Th e Travels of Lao Can, which Wu’s contemporary, Liu E, started writing that same year, and which begins as follows: “When a baby is born, he weeps, wa- wa; and when a man is old and dying, his family forms a circle around him and wail, hao- t’ao. Th us weeping is certainly that with which a man starts and fi nishes his life. In the interval, the quality of a man is mea sured by how much or little he weeps, for weeping is the expression of a spiritual nature.” “Th e passionate weeper,” as Liu styles himself, invites readers to join him in weeping.2 Liu was invoking an age- old idea: that tears are a power ful vehicle of communion among humans, or even with the cosmos. -
