I would like to thank her for the stimulating discussions and for the sleepless nights she spent listening to me. ii Abstract Although the formal legal codes of enslavement and segregation that stood for centuries has ended, the racist ideas rested and newer forms of racial prejudice appeared. In a supposed post racial period, new discrimination forms can be clearly seen in many fields like the beauty industry. Through products releases and advertisement campaigns, the industry defines beauty and sets its norms. Such conventional beauty standards are typically Eurocentric. It means that models should have lighter complexions, smoother hair textures and smaller noses and lips. As a reason to that, black skinned African-American women do not fit the Eurocentric beauty standards. They are marginalized from the industry. They are also deprived from any access to its products. In addition to all that, they get insulted through the language and pictures used in their advert campaigns. The negative stereotypes about colourism evolved to become more subtle and indirect formal expressions, meaning old-fashioned racism in another guise. One of these new forms of racism is present in the beauty industry. From its rise to recognition, the industry defined beauty on Eurocentric basis, built the business organizations needed to market it and globalized its ideal throughout the world. Therefore, in the light of what has been said and in order to better understand these new forms of racism and particularly in the industry of beauty, light should be cast on various questions: • Are African-American women racially segregated in the beauty industry? • If indeed they are: ➢ What are the characteristics of this racial beauty industry segregation? And more importantly, how do African-American women respond to it? As possible answers to the aforementioned questions, the following hypotheses are suggested: • Maybe there is no such a behaviour in the industry To answer these questions, this work has been divided into three chapters. The first one entitled "The American History of Racial Discrimination" is dedicated to the history of race- based segregation on the American soil starting from the first arrival of Africans to the U.S.A up to the Civil Rights Movement. Definitions are provided and more details are added about what happened between these two major events in the American history. Then, in the second chapter, entitled "The History of Cosmetic Use in Relation to White Skin Colour ", the work is conducted to explore the historical precedents underlying the creation and the use of cosmetics in relation to the white skin colour starting from ancient periods to the modern times. Imported Cosmetics and Colonial Crucibles: Pre-histories to the Twentieth-century Use of Commercial Skin Lighteners This draft chapter is part of my current book project that examines the production, consumption, and opposition to skin lighteners in South Africa and tracks how these processes were intimately related to developments in Europe, Asia, East Africa, the broader southern Africa region, and particularly the United States. Although skin lighteners generated significant profits and controversy in all of these locales over the past century, they have garnered scarce historical attention. The overarching aim of this transregional and transnational history is to demonstrate how changing politics of gender, race, and consumption developed through the movement of people, ideas, and especially things between a range of locations. Much of my book is focused on the second half of the twentieth century. In the wake of the Second World War, the sale of skin lighteners took off as black South Africans became more engaged in capitalist consumer culture and the elaboration of apartheid further heightened the political and social salience of nuances in skin color. By the 1960s, skin lighteners were a mass produced and consumed commodity in South Africa; one marketing survey from 1969 found that among urban African women, skin lightening creams ranked as the fourth most commonly used household product after soap, tea, and tinned milk. Over the 1970s, two different forms of opposition to skin lighteners emerged: one rooted in the Black Consciousness movement and its political affirmation of “Black is Beautiful,” and the other, in medical professionals’ health concerns over the main active ingredients then found in skin lighteners, notably ammoniated 2 mercury and hydroquinone.

ACCESSORY DESIGN UNDERGRADUATE ACCE 101 Accessory Design Immersion Students discover the world of fashion accessory design with an in-depth exploration of the evolution of accessory trends, brands and research methodologies. Students learn to sketch accessory concepts, make patterns and select finishing techniques to bring accessory ideas to fruition. Through operating sewing machines, cutting tables and skiving machines students learn how to craft accessories with skill and precision. Prerequisite(s): DRAW 100, DSGN 102, any major or minor except accessory design. ACCE 110 Sewing Technology for Accessory Design This course introduces students to the industry practices involved in producing accessories. Students also are introduced to decorative ornamentation techniques while applying these techniques to accessory design. Basic patternmaking skills are taught and provide the foundation for future courses in accessory design. Prerequisite(s): None. ACCE 120 Materials and Processes for Accessory Design This course introduces students to core materials used in the implementation of accessory design products. By exploring the qualities and properties of traditional materials, students learn the basics of traditional and nontraditional materials. Students explore a variety of techniques related to accessory design with leather, from tanning to production. This course also explores alternative materials used in accessory products such as rubber, synthetics, woods and metals, as well as cements. This course requires experimentation culminating in a final project which explores individualized processes and material manipulation.

SHADES OF BEIGE 1 Shades of Beige: Tarte Cosmetics and Racial Inclusivity Dominika Jedinak University of Nebraska at Omaha SHADES OF BEIGE 2 Abstract The release of Shape Tape foundation, a facial cosmetics line by Tarte Cosmetics, sparked disappointment and outrage in consumers for the lack of racial inclusivity in the range of shades offered. This came as a surprise to Tarte who, from their beginning has been a very socially aware and ecologically thoughtful company. Was this outrage justified? Did Tarte owe their customers an apology? And, if so, how should they go about making amends? When Tarte released an apology, they further angered consumers who took to social media to express their dissatisfaction. The Shape Tape foundation release sparked a debate on inclusivity in cosmetics that was further heightened by the release of Fenty Beauty, a cosmetics line centering around racial diversity, who have done tremendously in sales after only two years.
