Grizzlies Beat Blazers to Seal Place in Semifinals Sports FRIDAY, MAY 1, 2015 Juventus needs a point to start title party MILAN: One point is all Juventus needs. Even if second-place Lazio beats Atalanta on Sunday, a draw against Sampdoria on Saturday would leave Juventus 12 points clear with four matches remaining and the better head-to-head record. Sealing the title would be the first step of a possible treble for Juventus, which also faces Real Madrid in the Champions League semifinals and will play Lazio in the Italian Cup final. “Our goal is in sight, let’s go and get what we deserve Saturday and then we’ll try and follow dreams which are even more beautiful,” Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said on Twitter. Allegri faces a difficult decision on whether to rest some players this weekend, with the first leg of the Champions League semifinals against Real Madrid on Tuesday. Also, Roma hosts Genoa on Sunday, with the capital side hoping to remain in the Champions League spots, while a resurgent Napoli welcomes AC Milan, which could have a new coach and a new owner. Here are some things to know about this weekend’s games: SAME OLD JUVE Juventus was rocked when Antonio Conte quit in the offsea- son and further stunned when he was replaced by Allegri, who had been fired by AC Milan several months earlier and appeared to be the antithesis of the beloved former coach. However, little has changed in the league as Juventus is once again storming to the title, while Allegri has steered Juventus into the Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2003. “Allegri has given us a lot,” said Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who is also the team’s captain. “He inherited a great MEMPHIS: Portland Trail Blazers center Robin Lopez shoots against Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol (33), of Spain, group, with good moral values and skills, a very difficult job was in the second half of Game 5 of an NBA basketball Western Conference playoff series Wednesday, in Memphis, Tenn. Matchday Three Milan 20 October 2004 AC MILAN – FC BARCELONA STADIO GIUSEPPE MEAZZA, MILAN WEDNESDAY 20 OCTOBER 2004 at 20.45 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE GROUP F, MATCHDAY 3 AC MILAN v FC BARCELONA After the thrilling game against Celtic FC, resolved in AC Milan’s favour by two late goals, UEFA Champions League football returns to San Siro with an exciting clash between two former champions of Europe and the two teams who met in the 1994 final in Athens. Both are among the seven clubs who have opened their campaign with maximum points from two matches and the Group F table might suggest that they hold a comfortable advantage over their adversaries. However, while the two former champions are trying to take points from each other, the other Group F participants will be trying to make up ground and mount a serious challenge to the favourites. The fans are promised two epic confrontations between two of Europe’s most experienced campaigners and this match will be a special occasion for Frank Rijkaard, who after a successful playing career with AC Milan, returns to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza as the head coach of FC Barcelona. Bearing in mind that the two clubs have jointly played 635 European matches and 301 in the continent’s premier competition, it’s surprising that they’ve met only four times and that they had a spell of 30 years from 1959 to 1989 without crossing paths. In the UEFA Champions League, this is only the second time that they have met on a home-and-away basis apart from the 1994 final in Athens, when Fabio Capello’s AC Milan beat Johan Cruyff’s FC Barcelona 4-0.

  • Iraqi Football Fans United by Love of European Teams
Friday 45 Sports Friday, October 13, 2017 Iraqi football fans united by love of European teams BAGHDAD: Iraqi football supporters decked out in red cram into a cafe in Baghdad to cheer on their shared love- Manchester United. Shouting, cursing and-eventually-cele- brating, they watch as the team from the north of England notches up a win half way around the globe. “United! United! United!”, they chant with joy in accents that are far from Mancunian. While revered arenas such as Old Trafford or the Camp Nou may be thousands of kilometers away, supporting some of Europe’s best-loved teams offers a rare chance for Iraqi fans to come together and forget the troubles roiling their homeland. Across the violence-wracked country, where some 400,000 people have been killed since the US-led invasion in 2003, there are 13 supporter groups officially recognized by clubs in Britain, Italy, Spain and Germany. In a nation that has been torn apart by years of bloodshed and bitter division, a mutual passion for the beautiful game often helps to bridge differences. “We all come together for Manchester United,” says Alaa Saadi, who heads Iraq’s largest fan group of some 450 members. “Young and old, Shiites and Sunnis, Arab and Kurds, Christians and Muslims.” Fans targeted Ali Anab, president of the Bayern Munich supporters club, says that watching the German champions offers “a respite, a chance to forget daily life”. But even during those brief 90 minutes of distraction the violence in Iraq can still come bursting in brutally. Last year, the Islamic State group claimed a gun, grenade and suicide attack that left 16 dead at a cafe popular with fans of Spanish giants Real Madrid in a provincial town.

  • MANCHESTER UNITED FC V AC MILAN
First Knock-out Round First Leg Manchester 23 February 2005 MANCHESTER UNITED FC - AC MILAN OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER WEDNESDAY 23 FEBRUARY 2005 at 19.45 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FIRST KNOCK-OUT ROUND, FIRST LEG MANCHESTER UNITED FC v AC MILAN UEFA Champions League football returns to Old Trafford for the first time in 2005 with a thrilling clash between two former champions of Europe in one of the many ties that coiuld easily have been this season’s final. United fans will remember that their team produced epic performances against Italian opposition en route to the 1999 final, whereas AC Milan’s encounters with English opposition are surprisingly thin on the ground. They have played against English teams only three times in the last quarter of a century and have not met any English sides since they were drawn against both Chelsea FC and Leeds United AFC in the 2000/01 campaign. A thrilling and evenly-balanced tie is in prospect. This will be the third tie between the clubs in UEFA competitions with AC Milan successful on the previous two occasions, both in the Champion Clubs’ Cup semi-finals. Though Manchester United won both games at Old Trafford, the margin of AC Milan’s wins in Italy in the 1957/58 and 1968/69 seasons enabled them to progress. The clubs’ first meeting was the first European game after the Munich air crash, while the latter win eliminated the holders of the competition. In the 1957/58 tie, Paolo Maldini’s father Cesare took part in the game, and in 1968/69 Fabio Cudicini, father of the Chelsea FC player, was AC Milan’s keeper.
