  • Animal and Human Depictions on Artefacts from Early Anglo-Saxon Graves in the Light of Theories of Material Culture
Animal and human depictions on artefacts from early Anglo-Saxon graves in the light of theories of material culture Submitted by Leah Moradi to the University of Exeter as a dissertation for the degree of Master of Arts by Research in Archaeology in January 2019 This thesis is made available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this dissertation which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: …………………………………………………………. Abstract This dissertation explores the relationship between animal and human motifs on early Anglo-Saxon (AD 450–650) artefacts and the individuals with whom the objects are buried, as well as the wider communities to which they belong. A sample of sites was taken from the two historical regions of East Anglia and Wessex, compiling data such as object type and material, sex and age of individuals, and the human and animal motifs depicted. From a total of 32 sites, 5560 graves were analyzed; of these, 198 graves from 28 sites contained artefacts with anthropomorphic and/or zoomorphic decoration. Anthropological and material culture theories of totemism, shamanism, animism, and object agency were employed in the interpretation of results to consider the symbolic meaning of anthropomorphically- and zoomorphically-decorated objects, and how they may have reflected the social organization and ideologies of communities in early Anglo-Saxon England.

  • Anglo-Saxon Crops and Weeds Can Be More Than the Sum of Their Parts
Anglo-Saxon Crops and Weeds A Case Study in Quantitative Archaeobotany Mark McKerracher Access Archaeology haeopr c es r s A A y c g c e o l s o s e A a r c Ah About Access Archaeology Access Archaeology offers a different publishing model for specialist academic material that might traditionally prove commercially unviable, perhaps due to its sheer extent or volume of colour content, or simply due to its relatively niche field of interest. This could apply, for example, to a PhD dissertation or a catalogue of archaeological data. All Access Archaeology publications are available in open-access e-pdf format and in print format. The open-access model supports dissemination in areas of the world where budgets are more severely limited, and also allows individual academics from all over the world the opportunity to access the material privately, rather than relying solely on their university or public library. Print copies, nevertheless, remain available to individuals and institutions who need or prefer them. The material is refereed and/or peer reviewed. Copy-editing takes place prior to submission of the work for publication and is the responsibility of the author. Academics who are able to supply print-ready material are not charged any fee to publish (including making the material available in open-access). In some instances the material is type-set in-house and in these cases a small charge is passed on for layout work. Our principal effort goes into promoting the material, both in open-access and print, where Access Archaeology books get the same level of attention as all of our publications which are marketed through e-alerts, print catalogues, displays at academic conferences, and are supported by professional distribution worldwide.

  • Wiltshire Yews an Inventory of Churchyard Yews Along the Bourne Valley
Wiltshire Yews An Inventory of Churchyard Yews Along the Bourne Valley. By Peter Norton 1 Introduction: This report is the fourth of five observations of Churchyard Yews in and around the Rivers, Wylye, Ebble, Nadder and Bourne that converge with the Wiltshire / Hampshire Avon as it flows through the Salisbury area. The Bourne's source is at the eastern end of the Vale of Pewsey and just south of the village of Burbage. The river cuts through the chalk escarpment at Collingbourne Kingston to flow south across Salisbury Plain before joining the Avon, near the trading estate that straddles the A36 on the eastern side of the city and some fifteen miles from its source. Due to its nature it may be referred to as a chalk stream but the river itself is normally a winter bourne, meaning that it only flows during the winter months, normally November through to April. The Bourne valley is followed for its entire length by the main A338 road, which continues south of Salisbury along the Avon valley. All of the villages along this route were included, with eighteen churchyards visited. Of these fourteen contained yew trees, and although many of those mentioned are small in stature compared to some of the giants already recorded within the Yew Gazetteer, it was felt that, as time progresses, these younger trees will become our future giants for the next generations of yew enthusiasts. A total of seventy seven trees were noted at these sites of which thirty two had measurements recorded. (See graph below which has been grouped by girth and does not include any estimated* values.) Imperial measurements were taken during the recording exercise and converted to Metric.
