A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in History by Ingrid Frederika DeSanto 2018 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION Righteous Citizens: The Lynching of Johan and Cornelis DeWitt, The Hague, Collective Violence, and the Myth of Tolerance in the Dutch Golden Age, 1650-1672 by Ingrid Frederika DeSanto Doctor of Philosophy in History University of California, Los Angeles Professor Margaret C Jacob, Chair In The Hague, on August 20 th , 1672, the Grand Pensionary of Holland, Johan DeWitt and his brother Cornelis DeWitt were publicly killed, their bodies mutilated and hanged by the populace of the city. This dissertation argues that this massacre remains such an unique event in Dutch history, that it needs thorough investigation. Historians have focused on short-term political causes for the eruption of violence on the brothers’ fatal day. This work contributes to the existing historiography by uncovering more long-term political and social undercurrents in Dutch society. In doing so, issues that may have been overlooked previously are taken into consideration as well.

  • Leidsche Rijn: Balancing the Compact City with the Randstad Motorway Network
2 Leidsche Rijn: Balancing the Compact City with the Randstad Motorway Network Frank van der Hoeven Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Architecture Netherlands 1. Introduction In the mid-1990s, the Dutch economy grew at a pace of 3 to 4 percent annually (CBS, 2009). The use of the country's major infrastructure increased accordingly, and the urban areas in the western part of the country, the Randstad, continued to expand to meet the soaring housing demand. After decades of state intervention, the government started to loosen its grip on local and regional urban development. The government's policy on spatial planning shifted away from the concept of planning new towns to focus on more compact urban development (compacte stad). The policy reasoned that a compact city would have a smaller environmental footprint because of more effective land-use and shorter daily travel distances. With its Fourth Report on Spatial Planning (VROM, 1988: Vierde Nota) and the additional VINEX-report (VROM, 1993: Vierde Nota Extra), the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Housing and the Environment no longer seemed to dictate that one solution that fits all. Rather, it sought to implement developments that suited the regional territorial characteristics and the preferences of the concerned authorities. Thus, Utrecht ended up with the largest VINEX-development in the Netherlands. In fact, Utrecht is the fourth largest city by population in the country, after Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague. Although the concept of the 'compact city' may be simple, it had deep implications for the relation between infrastructure planning and town planning. Back in the seventies and eighties two major new town developments were built south of Utrecht to house its expanding population.

  • The Roots of Nationalism
HERITAGE AND MEMORY STUDIES 1 HERITAGE AND MEMORY STUDIES Did nations and nation states exist in the early modern period? In the Jensen (ed.) field of nationalism studies, this question has created a rift between the so-called ‘modernists’, who regard the nation as a quintessentially modern political phenomenon, and the ‘traditionalists’, who believe that nations already began to take shape before the advent of modernity. While the modernist paradigm has been dominant, it has been challenged in recent years by a growing number of case studies that situate the origins of nationalism and nationhood in earlier times. Furthermore, scholars from various disciplines, including anthropology, political history and literary studies, have tried to move beyond this historiographical dichotomy by introducing new approaches. The Roots of Nationalism: National Identity Formation in Early Modern Europe, 1600-1815 challenges current international scholarly views on the formation of national identities, by offering a wide range of contributions which deal with early modern national identity formation from various European perspectives – especially in its cultural manifestations. The Roots of Nationalism Lotte Jensen is Associate Professor of Dutch Literary History at Radboud University, Nijmegen. She has published widely on Dutch historical literature, cultural history and national identity. The Golden Age Tour - 6 dagen DUTCH BIKETOURS - EMAIL: [email protected] - TELEPHONE +31 (0)24 3244712 - WWW.DUTCH-BIKETOURS.COM The Golden Age Tour 6 days, € 490 Introduction It’s the 17th century, an age of economic and cultural prosperity in the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. The Golden Age! The tiny Republic dominates world trade thanks to an enormous commercial fleet and a strong navy. As the rich grow richer, science and art gain importance and flourish. Thanks to the excellent business instincts of the Dutch, towns such as Delft, The Hague and Rotterdam are growing and prospering. Discover traces of this exiting century during your carefree bicycle holiday with Dutch Bike Tours. Day to Day Day 1 Arrival in The Hague Easy to reach from just about everywhere, The Hague, city of justice and peace, is beautifully situated just behind the dunes on the North Sea coast and has a worldly sophistication. It is unlike any other city in the Netherlands. The city centre is looking more modern by the minute, but you can still visit the Houses of Parliament, reputedly the oldest in Europe that are still in use as parliament buildings. If you look at them from across the pond (moat), you will see that the site was constructed as a castle; and when you step into the inner courtyard it’s like going back in time. The Hague has the same wide variety of tourist attractions as Amsterdam, but then less crowded and with the beach around the corner. For our Golden Age theme you shouldn’t miss Mauritshuis art museum with paintings by Johannes Vermeer, Rembrandt van Rijn, Paulus Potter, Jan Steen, Frans Hals and others.
