3.2 Life sciences

The life sciences & health sector is the largest employer in Zuid-Holland, with nearly 210,000 jobs. This sector is of great importance for the region. Zuid-Holland houses an ideal combina- tion of chemical and biotechnological industry and leading knowledge institutions in the field of life sciences & health, cleantech and biotech. On an international level, these parties play an important part. The province is committed to further strengthening the leading role of the Zuid-Holland companies in the life sciences & health sector. To achieve this, many knowledge institutions and SME companies use European subsidies. The effects of the project are twofold: healthcare gets the chance to take a big step forward in the personalized medicine, making better care possible; and it contributes to the further development of the knowledge-based economy in Zuid-Holland. The project is of particular importance because it helps the participating parties to become leading in the future field of medicine. Based on this project, further initiatives may be set up to build on the knowledge gained in Biomat - for instance, further research and the launch of new products and companies.

4.1 Energy transition

The energy transition in Zuid-Holland is in full swing. The province wants to organize the transition to clean energy and energy effici- ency in a smart way, and fast. To do this, the Zuid-Holland Energy Agenda has been drafted in cooperation with companies, knowledge institutions, social organizations and local authorities. This agenda shows what is needed to promote energy saving and to increase the use of clean energy sources such as renewable heat, wind, solar, biomass and delta energy. The objective is clear: a sustainable energy A package of innovative sustainable measures supply in Zuid-Holland, so soon and as smart as has been designed for Hart van Zuid. Intelli- possible. Effects of the project and its role in the innovation chain The project implements 13 smart solutions that are part of the large-scale, sustainable renovation of the Rotterdam-Zuid area. Among other things, geothermal energy, heat-cold storage, smart energy management in buildings and intelligent street lighting are used. There is extensive use of smart applications of internet, big data, robotics and sensors. These techniques are developed further at the same time, allowing existing business models to make strides toward the future. With that, the project closely relates to the ‘Investing In innovation’ agenda of the MRDH. The investments create additional employment, but mainly contribute to the greater attraction of the area, partly due to the further improved air quality.

With that, the project is an important step in the sustainabilization of transport and helps the industry to test and improve their products. In the end, the project helps expand the market for transport on hydrogen, resulting in significant reductions in costs.

To realize the ambition for a climate-adaptive delta, the Province of Zuid-Holland makes use of the various European funding opportunities. The project Proeftuin Delta Innovations Zuid-Holland, for instance, under the umbrella of the Zuid-Holland valorisation programme VP Delta. This project aims to create eleven pilot locations for technological (basic or industrial) research, development and the demonstrati- ons. The essential process of knowledge valorisation required for innovation is also a pillar of the programme.
