Play(ing) in the Pear Garden: Theater and the Makings of the Asian American Identity By By Jeffrey Nishimura In Tripmaster Monkey (1989), Maxine Hong Kingston’s Sino-Ulysses, Wittman Ah Sing is a hip, Chinese American existentialist, wandering the streets of San Francisco. When he is not contemplating a bullet in the head, Wittman is declaring his artistic dreams to a stock boy at a San Francisco toy store where he is employed: I’m going to start a theater company. I’m naming it The Pear Garden Players of America. The Pear Garden was the cradle of civilization, where theater began on earth. Out among the trees, ordinary people made fools of themselves acting like kings and queens. As playwright and producer and director, I’m casting blind. That means the actors can be any race. Each member of the Tyrone family or the Lomans can be a different color. I’m including everything that is being left out, and everyone who has no place. My idea for the Civil Rights Movement is that we integrate jobs, schools, buses, housing, lunch counters, yes, and we also integrate theaters and parties. The dressing up. The dancing. The loving. The playing. Have you ever acted? Why don’t you join my theater company? I’ll make a part for you. Transnational Legitimization of an Actor: The Life and Career of Soon-Tek Oh1 ESTHER KIM LEE He is the voice of the father in the Disney animation film Mulan (1998). He is Sensei in the Hollywood hit film Beverly Hills Ninja (1997). He is Lieutenant Hip in the 007 film The Man with the Golden Gun (1974). These examples may trigger memories of Soon-Tek Oh in the minds of many Americans.2 Some would vaguely remember him as the “oriental” actor whose face often gets confused with those of other Asian and Asian American actors, such as Mako and James Hong. Theatre aficionados may remember him for his award-winning role in Stephen Sondheim’s musical Pacific Overtures in the 1970s, but more Americans will know him as the quintessential “oriental” man in Hollywood. This is not the legacy Soon-Tek Oh wanted. He would prefer to be remembered as an artist, an actor who played Hamlet, Romeo, and Osvald Alving; who founded theatre companies; who promoted cultural awareness for Korean Americans; and who taught youths with all of his integ- rity. He wanted to be a “great actor,” who transcended all markings, especially racial ones, and who was recognized for his talent as an artist. He has sought what I describe in this essay as “legitimization” as a respected actor at every crucial point in his life.3 Soon-Tek Oh was the first Korean actor to appear in American mainstream theatre, film, or television.4 He left Korea for Hollywood in 1959 as a young man, seeking to learn the craft of filmmaking. -

Beginning with vanguard works filmed in Super 8mm, Visual Communications productions have been distinguished by their unerring fidelity to the stories and perspectives of Asian America. As evidenced within this catalog, this policy has continued as Visual Communications’ productions have transitioned from film and video to digital formats. As well, the stories being told through our various offerings reflect the ever-changing landscape of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, and introduces us to filmmakers and voices who have come of age in the 22 years since the first edition of this catalog. -

AUJEAN LEE TONY ZHANG UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES 1 PREFACE These reports represent Asian American Studies’ commitment to engaged scholarship through teaching and community-oriented research that are mutually beneficial. Community partners are instrumental in identifying research needs, participating in and facilitating data collection, as- sisting in analyzing information, and disseminating findings to inform policy debates and pro- gram development. For community members, we hope that they will gain insights from student research. At the same time, students gain real-world understanding of Asian American issues. The class that sponsored a community project serves as a bridge for students’ academic training and their life after graduation. We hope that this project enables students to acquire and apply research skills and engage in broader social justice movements. This course, “Capstone Community-based Research: Asian American Enclaves and Community Institutions,” connected students to Sawtelle Japantown Association (SJA). The class was offered through UCLA’s Asian American Studies Department. This year’s project examines the factors that contribute to the vitality of ethnic enclaves and community institutions to then provide rec- ommendations to SJA. SJA has been working since 2014 to preserve the cultural and historic as- pects of the Sawtelle area. They are working to mobilize and strengthen community and cultural organizations so that its members have an active, strong, and effective voice in planning their neighborhood’s future. This project emerged from a joint planning effort that started during the summer of 2014.
