CHAPTER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM " A NEW DIRECTION Through discussions at the November and December board meetings, the development of an internship program has evolved to the point that the chapter would continue its scholarship program but reduce its number to fund this intern.

The intern, preferably a college student or recent graduate, would work for three months or longer on chapter developmental projects such as assisting the newsletter editor to make the publication self$su%cient, assuming leadership for the Fall boutique show at VJCC, researching and creating a database of past chapter scholarship recipients, and developing a membership campaign. WLA JACL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

The chapter will award their annual scholarship to a deserving high school senior, with a 3.6 or better GPA, planning to attend college in the fall. 2008 Nisei Week Court!s Goodwill Trip to Our Sister City Nagoya

Nisei Week is no beauty pageant, it is something far more. Not quite like a sorority, but the sisterhood bond is definitely there. !To be a member of the 2008 Nisei Week court is to be a proud representative of the Japanese American Community. It is also like an internship.

This past October, I was fortunate to travel to our sister city, Nagoya, . The 2008 Nisei Week Court I witnessed the strong bond between our two communities. Fujimoto, Jill Hiraizumi, Kie Ito, and Lisa Takehana Gratefully, my uncle and grandmother were able to join me in Nagoya, Japan. There, we took part in the Nagoya Festival and participated in their parade! I was very excited to see the all the people in the huge crowd.!I also enjoyed the hot springs at the "Suimeikan" in Gero. The onsen (hot springs), was a very cultural and relaxing experience. We stayed in Japan for a week and a half. I cannot be more thankful for this unforgettable experience!

The West Los Angeles JACL and Venice Japanese Community Center have begun their search for candidates to participate in the selection of Miss Western Los Angeles 2009. The queen will represent these organizations and areas in the upcoming Nisei Week Festivities with a Miss Nisei Week Queen 2009 to be selected in August at the Coronation at the Japan America Theatre.

Applicants must be between the age of 19 and not older that 25 on the day of the Coronation. She must be at least half Japanese ancestry. It is preferable that the applicant or the applicant’s family resides in the western area of Los Angeles County.
