Theater and the Makings of the Asian American Identity by by Jeffrey Nishimura
Asian American Literature: Discourses and Pedagogies 1 (2010) 27-34. Play(ing) in the Pear Garden: Theater and the Makings of the Asian American Identity By By Jeffrey Nishimura In Tripmaster Monkey (1989), Maxine Hong Kingston’s Sino-Ulysses, Wittman Ah Sing is a hip, Chinese American existentialist, wandering the streets of San Francisco. When he is not contemplating a bullet in the head, Wittman is declaring his artistic dreams to a stock boy at a San Francisco toy store where he is employed: I’m going to start a theater company. I’m naming it The Pear Garden Players of America. The Pear Garden was the cradle of civilization, where theater began on earth. Out among the trees, ordinary people made fools of themselves acting like kings and queens. As playwright and producer and director, I’m casting blind. That means the actors can be any race. Each member of the Tyrone family or the Lomans can be a different color. I’m including everything that is being left out, and everyone who has no place. My idea for the Civil Rights Movement is that we integrate jobs, schools, buses, housing, lunch counters, yes, and we also integrate theaters and parties. The dressing up. The dancing. The loving. The playing. Have you ever acted? Why don’t you join my theater company? I’ll make a part for you. (Kingston 52) It isn’t surprising that Wittman settles on this particular medium as the chance of his own Becoming, confessing: “I’m not ready for Being yet” (Kingston 52). -

JAPANESE AMERICAN CULTURAL & COMMUNITY CENTER ANNUAL REPORT 2016–2017 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The 2016–2017 Fiscal Year marked a year of planning with confidence and intentionality. JACCC was fortunate to have been granted support from the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland allowing us to work for eight months with Brett Egan, one of the nation’s top leaders in strategic planning. JACCC leadership, which included both board and staff, created a plan to span through 2022, mapping out our future and allowing for course-corrections as needed. This Fiscal Year also marks the fourth consecutive year that JACCC has maintained a positive operating budget. This is due to the commitment of our donors and supporters who have helped us stabilize our operations and continue to make a significant impact on the experiences of every artist, audience member, and participant, young and young at heart who visits and enjoys the programs at JACCC. As I head toward my fifth year of leading this institution, I am thankful every day for the hard work and dedication of our staff and board members. Their efforts have helped us get to a place where we are able to plan strategically and confidently, and bring our audiences a mul- titude of programming ranging from traditional to contemporary: Edo period art of the Price Collection, master artists like Nomura Mansaku, the Comedy Comedy Fest, and Ukuleles for Little Tokyo. It has truly been an exciting and full year. Sincerely, Leslie A. Ito President & CEO JACCC MISSION A hub for Japanese and Japanese American arts and culture and a community gathering place for the diverse voices it inspires—Japanese American Cultural & Community Center connects traditional and contemporary; community participants and creative professionals; Southern California and the world beyond. -

Section 2. CONTEXTUAL BACKGROUND ! Local & Regional Setting ! Historical Context ! Physical Context: Land Use ! Physical Context: Mobility ! Physical Context: Urban Design ! Socio-economic Context ! Policy Context ! Community Values Section 2 CONTEXTUAL BACKGROUND 11 Local & Regional Setting Regional Setting Pasadena is situated at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains in the western San Gabriel Valley, approximately 10 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. This location offers numerous advantages, including convenient freeway and airport access that will continue to provide the City a competitive advantage as a regional business hub. Moreover, few localities can match the physical beauty afforded by the backdrop of the San Gabriels. San Gabriel Mountains Local Setting Located in the heart of the City, the Central District’s approximately 960 acres essentially correspond to the area recognized by Pasadena’s residents as “Downtown.” (Downtown and Central District will be used interchangeably in this document.) Included within its boundaries are the activity centers popularly known as Old Pasadena, the Civic Center, the Playhouse District, and South Lake Avenue; each makes a special contribution to this urban setting with an active mixture of uses. The Central District’s boundaries are clearly marked to the north and west by the 210 and 710 Freeways respectively, and it’s buildings are prominent features along these highways. Approaching the campuses of the California Institute of California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and Pasadena City College (PCC), the eastern Technology boundary lies one to two blocks east of Lake Avenue. The southern limit roughly follows California Boulevard, except that the Specific Plan area includes the Arroyo Parkway corridor extending from the 110 Freeway into the midst of Downtown. -
