Your essay should have 5 paragraphs 1. Introduction 2. What was the hostile environment like for that individual? 3. What were some of the individual's heroic actions in response to the hostile environment? 4. How did the individual's heroic actions positively impact others? 5. Conclusion Write the name of the person you chose to write your research essay about here: At this point, you should have at least TWO credible sources about your person that you found on the Internet. Body Paragraph 1 - Hostile Environment This paragraph will answer the question: Wh at was the hostile environment like for your individual? Use this paragraph to explain what life was like for your person, the hardships your person faced, and how the environment your person lived in was hostile toward them. Directions: Using 4 different colors, please identify each part of a ToSEEC paragraph by highlighting the sentences. ToS - Yellow Evidence - Green Elaboration - Blue Conclusion Statement - Pink Unequal Treatment Dr. King lived in America during a time of great hostility for African Americans. Racial segregation was legal, and African Americans were treated as though they were inferior to whites. Schools and public places were segregated. According to National Humanities Center Fellow Steven F. Lawson, —local and state authorities never funded black education equally nor did African Americans have equal access to public accommodations.“ This created a hostile environment for African Americans because they didn‘t have the same opportunities or resources as whites. At this time, each state was allowed to make its own rules about voting. Some states used poll taxes and literacy tests to make it harder for some African Americans to vote (—Martin Luther King Jr.“). Without equal access to voting, African Americans couldn‘t vote against the laws that treated them unfairly. Dr. King believed that if people worked together, they could change this situation. Use this paragraph to explain how your person took action against the hostile environment they lived in, how your person worked against the challenges they faced. Directions: Using 4 different colors, please identify each part of a ToSEEC paragraph by highlighting the sentences. ToS - Yellow Evidence - Green Elaboration - Blue Conclusion Statement - Pink Heroic Action To create this change, Dr. King acted on behalf of others and took extraordinary risks to bring about progress. Helping his fellow man, he began organizing people to peacefully stand up for racial equality. He worked tirelessly for others and used sit-ins, boycotts, and protest marches to draw attention to the injustices of segregation (—Martin Luther King, Jr. œ Biography“). He also put himself in danger by bringing attention to the unfair treatment of African Americans. For example, Dr. King‘s home was bombed and he was assaulted four times (—Martin Luther King Jr. œ Biography“). Even when he was the victim of violence, Dr. King displayed heroic action by continuing to call on others to engage in peaceful activism. He did not let others intimidate him into silence, and he never used violence as a response. Because of these heroic actions, Dr. King helped build the Civil Rights Movement, bringing people together to make change without using fear or violence. Use this space to write your second body paragraph , referencing the example on the previous page to help you. Topic Sentence: _______________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Evidence: ____________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Elaboration:__________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Conclusion Statement: _________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Body Paragraph 3 - Impact on Others This paragraph will answer the question - How did your individual's heroic actions positively impact others? Use this paragraph to explain how the actions your person took helped others. Directions: Using 4 different colors, please identify each part of a ToSEEC paragraph by highlighting the sentences. ToS - Yellow Evidence - Green Elaboration - Blue Conclusion Statement - Pink Lasting Impact Dr. King‘s peaceful organizing had an important impact in changing minds and laws. People around the country learned about how unequal treatment was affecting the lives of African Americans because of Dr. King‘s activism. Because of this increase in awareness, more and more people began to reject racist laws. On August 28, 1963, Dr. King led more than 200,000 people to the Lincoln Memorial in the March on Washington. There, he gave his famous —I Have a Dream“ speech. The march and Dr. King‘s speech influenced Congress‘ passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This law made it illegal to segregate public areas and discriminate against African Americans (—Martin Luther King Jr.“). Dr. King‘s leadership helped congressmen understand that the law needed to be changed to ensure equality for African Americans. Dr. King kept working to —ensure that blacks could not be denied the right to vote by discriminating practices“ (—Martin Luther King Jr. œ Biography“). He led the March for Voting Rights, a fifty-four-mile march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. In response, Congress passed the Voting Rights Act in 1965. Again, Dr. King‘s organizing helped pass laws giving more protection to African Americans. He showed that change could come in a hostile environment if people joined together to send a message to those in power. Artistic Directors Note Antaeus Theatre Company has always been known as a “classical” theater company, featuring playwrights such as Shakespeare, Chekhov and Shaw. But a question that fascinates, confounds and inspires us is: What is a Classic? What makes a piece of writing timeless and fresh? What does a particular story have to say about our time, to our audience, to our community right now? We are always challenging ourselves to answer those questions. When we came across Nambi E. Kelley’s new adaptation of Richard Wright’s groundbreaking novel Native Son on the Kilroys List of un- and underproduced plays by female and transgender writers, we knew we had found a piece that would both answer — and expand — our definition of "What is a Classic?" • Aspectos Educacionais Do Karate: Discutindo Suas Representações No Cinema1
