Why Indiana Should Pass a Conversion Therapy Ban to Protect and Promote Mental Health Outcomes for Lgbtq Youth
EXTENDING HOOSIER HOSPITALITY TO LGBTQ YOUTH: WHY INDIANA SHOULD PASS A CONVERSION THERAPY BAN TO PROTECT AND PROMOTE MENTAL HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR LGBTQ YOUTH WARREN CANGANY* I. INTRODUCTION My sessions . focused on becoming a “proper woman.” I was told to become more submissive. I remember her saying, “It’s really a blessing we took you out of your leadership roles so guys will be more attracted to you.” The [other] woman focused on changing my physical appearance through feminine clothing and makeup. I soon developed an eating disorder: I don’t have a choice in attending these sessions, I thought, but at least I can control what I eat and throw up.1 Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender youth, as well as adolescents questioning their gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation (“LGBTQ”) “experience significant health and behavioral health disparities. Negative social attitudes and discrimination related to an individual’s LGBTQ identity contribute to these disparities, and lead to individual stressors that affect mental health and well-being.”2 “Today’s LGBTQ youth face a variety of stressors – harassment, family and peer rejection, bullying from their peers, isolation and a lack of a sense of belonging – that have a major impact on their overall well-being.”3 Along with these challenges, LGBTQ youth also face the same age-related developments that accompany adolescence for all youth.4 These challenges include, but are not limited to, processing and expressing gender identity, romantic attraction, and physical changes experienced through puberty.5 However, unlike their heterosexual peers, LGBTQ youth must navigate * J.D. -
Yul Kwon, from Bullying Target to Reality TV Star by NPR Staff from Npr.Org 2012
Name: Class: Yul Kwon, From Bullying Target to Reality TV Star By NPR Staff From Npr.Org 2012 Yul Kwon’s early life was mired with a host of challenges. Born to South Korean immigrants in New York, Kwon never had a positive role model from his community. In 2006, he decided to join the cast of Survivor and make a name for himself in popular culture. As you read, take notes on how Yul Kwon overcame his personal demons to become a role model for other Asian Americans. [1] Yul Kwon first earned his game-changer status when the Yale University-trained lawyer put his career on hold to compete on the CBS show Survivor in 2006. He became the first Asian- American to win that show's $1 million prize. That led to work as a special correspondent for CNN, a lecturer at the FBI Academy, and deputy chief of the Federal Communication Commission's Consumer and Governmental Affairs Bureau. Kwon currently hosts the news program LinkAsia on LinkTV, and recently finished hosting PBS' America Revealed, a mini documentary series "Yul J. Kwon" is licensed under CC BY 2.0. about agriculture, transportation, energy and manufacturing. Being A Target Of Bullying Kwon's early life involved a host of challenges. He was born in 1975 in New York to South Korean immigrants. He tells Tell Me More host Michel Martin he had a severe lisp as a kid, so many people assumed he was a foreigner who could not speak English properly. Kwon says he grew increasingly quiet to avoid being teased or beaten up. -

Biographical Notes World on Fire Peter Bowker Writer, World on Fire MASTERPIECE fans remember Peter Bowker’s impassioned adaptation of Wuthering Heights from 2009, which captured Emily Brontë’s masterpiece in all its complexity. Bowker has been an established screenwriter in the U.K since penning scripts for Casualty in the early 1990s. His original work has included Undercover Heart; Flesh and Blood, for which he won Best Writer at the RTS Awards; Blackpool, which was awarded BANFF Film Festival Best Mini-Series and Global Television Grand Prize; and Occupation, which was awarded Best Drama Serial at the BAFTA Awards, in addition to Best Short-Form Drama at the WGGB Awards and another RTS Best Writer Award. He has since written Eric and Ernie and Marvellous. Both productions have won prestigious awards, including a Best Drama BAFTA for Marvellous, which became the most popular BBC2 single drama of the last 20 years. Most recently he has written an adaptation of John Lanchester’s novel Capital and two series of the acclaimed The A Word. Daniel Dae Kim Credits
DANIEL DAE KIM A veteran of episodic television, character actor Daniel Dae Kim became a familiar face on the small screen until he attained a different kind of stardom in 2004 when he was cast as the mysterious and controlling crash survivor Jin-Soo Kwok on the hit drama "Lost" (ABC, 2004-2010). Despite his character's inability to speak English, Kim's character rose to the top of the heap as a favorite among audiences. Prior to his breakout success on "Lost," Kim had racked up a number of guest starring stints on shows like "Law & Order" (NBC, 1990-2010), "Ally McBeal" (Fox, 1997-2002) and "Walker: Texas Ranger" (CBS, 1993-2001) before landing recurring roles on "Angel" (The WB, 1999-2004), "24" (Fox, 2001-2010) and "ER" (NBC, 1994-2009). He also made some headway into features with small parts in big movies like "The Jackal" (1997), "The Hulk" (2003) and "Spider Man 2" (2004). By the time "Lost" wound down, Kim had become a household name and moved on to another high-profile network series, "Hawaii Five-O" (CBS, 2010- ), which further established him as one of the more bankable stars on television. However, Kim and co-star Grace Park left the series in the summer of 2017 following a highly publicized contretemps with producer over the fact that the Asian actors were paid less than their co-stars. In 2013, Daniel forged a new path in his career by creating his own production company, 3AD. With the goal of featuring those traditionally underrepresented in front of, and behind the camera, 3AD is currently developing a number of projects, most notably ABC’s THE GOOD DOCTOR, where he serves as Executive Producer. -

Sentiment Analysis on Multi-View Social Data
Sentiment Analysis on Multi-view Social Data by Teng Niu Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the M.C.S. degree in Computer Science School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty of Engineering University of Ottawa c Teng Niu, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 Abstract With the proliferation of social networks, people are likely to share their opinions about news, social events and products on the Web. There is an increasing interest in understand- ing users' attitude or sentiment from the large repository of opinion-rich data on the Web. This can benefit many commercial and political applications. Primarily, the researchers concentrated on the documents such as users' comments on the purchased products. Re- cent works show that visual appearance also conveys rich human affection that can be predicted. While great efforts have been devoted on the single media, either text or im- age, little attempts are paid for the joint analysis of multi-view data which is becoming a prevalent form in the social media. For example, paired with the posted textual messages on Twitter, users are likely to upload images and videos which may carry their affective states. One common obstacle is the lack of sufficient manually annotated instances for model learning and performance evaluation. To prompt the researches on this problem, we introduce a multi-view sentiment analysis dataset (MVSA) including a set of manually annotated image-text pairs collected from Twitter. The dataset can be utilized as a valu- able benchmark for both single-view and multi-view sentiment analysis. -

Artistic Directors Note Antaeus Theatre Company has always been known as a “classical” theater company, featuring playwrights such as Shakespeare, Chekhov and Shaw. But a question that fascinates, confounds and inspires us is: What is a Classic? What makes a piece of writing timeless and fresh? What does a particular story have to say about our time, to our audience, to our community right now? We are always challenging ourselves to answer those questions. When we came across Nambi E. Kelley’s new adaptation of Richard Wright’s groundbreaking novel Native Son on the Kilroys List of un- and underproduced plays by female and transgender writers, we knew we had found a piece that would both answer — and expand — our definition of "What is a Classic?"
